    Evening Hawk Group Essay
In the poem Evening Hawk, Robert Penn Warren argues against the belief of human superiority by declaring nature as the foreboding judge of mankind's mistakes. Warren uses historical allusions, vivid imagery, and a juxtaposition of literal descriptions and abstract ideas to create a somber mood throughout the poem and to prove that death truly is the great equalizer.

From the start, it is clear that Warren shows two distinct sides to nature: the colorful, natural side and the cold, calculated side. The juxtaposition of these parts paints a picture of the whole world, with its “light above the pines and the guttural gorge” merging into one landscape. When the hawk flies through this creation, he “scythes” through another day with a “honed-steel edge,” implying that the hawk is experienced and impartial, almost like a grim reaper of the days. The “crashless fall of stalks of Time” further demonstrates that even if the world’s inhabitants don’t hear it, Time comes crashing down with each passing moment.

A fateful urgency is present in the second stanza with an extended metaphor depicting the “errors” of mankind. The misconception of human superiority and immortality is illustrated using the vivid image of a stalk, representative of time, as “heavy with the gold of our errors.” This image depicts the harmful effects of extensive human interaction with the natural world and how the weight of humanity’s guilt causes the head of each stalk to be heavy. Having the hawk, “climb the last light” while the world remains “unforgiven” and the earth is left in darkness as it “swings into shadows,” reveals the reality that nature is the true determinant of time, life, and death.

Warren continues to convey the concept of time as an entity by alluding to hieroglyphics that the hawk is featured in. This allusion only further illustrates how time is more than just a mere concept, but it’s also a living, breathing being like the hawk. He further goes on to refer to time as a person and that “His wisdom is ancient, too and immense.” This personification of time as a man whose intelligence is beyond that of any other being further solidifies Warren’s idea that time is something bigger then all of us. In lines 21-23 Warren mentions the world turning on its axis and then goes on to mention how history might “Drip in darkness” and compares it to a leaking pipe in a cellar. This simile expresses how even when we die and there’s nothing but darkness, time – the earth – will continue to move forward with or without you.

Through historical allusions, vivid imagery and a juxtaposition of literal and abstract concepts, the meaning of Warren’s poem becomes clear: time will only move forward, never looking back, like a hawk flying into the light of a new day.
