I've had a really good idea for a manga I would like to write lately. Only problem is, I'm not good at drawing manga. I mean, I can draw people and stuff, but only rough character designs. If you've read Death Note: How to Read 13, than you've read about how Ohba and Obata worked together, one creating rough storyboards, and the other drawing the actual work, the detail and stuff. I know, he had many helpers to do that, but this will be a mediocre manga anyway. What I'm getting at is that I want to create a manga with someone else. I would handle most of the story and rough character designs, but whoever I worked with would do most of the actual art. The manga's working title is Will be Mine, and it's about a boy who's parents are killed by the government. He then decides to conquer said government, take over the country, and later, the world. It takes place in a world very much like our own but with made up countries, and will have elements of dark humor among other things. If you're interested, I'd like to see some of your work. I will have a rough design of the main character up in this post soon, but I can't put it up just yet. I had started writing a manga myself, called Vampire Maiden, but I focused more on the character design and just drawing the characters than the actual story, then life took over and "writing" it never really happened. If you want a look at my dA, let me know. The things I'm best at drawing are animals and robots, but I can also do guns and mechanical things like that. I can also colour manga pretty well, so I'll just throw that out there too.
I would like to. I want to look at a couple different options before I choose. I also think it'd be cool if everybody who wanted to work on it collaborated on the art.
I've thought of doing the same, I have ideas for things I would do in anime/manga but I'm useless at drawing xD and Death Note proves that it can work and be highly successful

All of your help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe Reptar can draw the stuff on paper, Nashida could edit it and make it more digitally-y, DP can help clean the stuff up and possibly color if needed, and Saki you can help with the story, if you'd like. A system like that would be cool. The basic story goes like this: They main character, a boy who I'm thinking of calling, like, Entire or something, is 9 and lives with his mother and father in a country called Naeon. (Naeon is kinda like a mix of Japan and America.) Naeon's government claims to be a democracy, but it is more like a dictatorship to it's own citizens. It's very secretive to other countries and so all the other countries of the world believe it to be a peaceful place. It's hard to move there legally, however.(just like it is with America.) One day, after the president of Naeon started awar with it's neighboring country, Salean, Entire's parents get drafted into the army. They refuse to go, however, and so the government sends soldiers to Entire's house. When Entire's parents still refuse to go to war, the soldiers are about to execute them on the spot, right in front of Entire. Entire is hiding in the shadows, and when the soildiers draw their guns, Entire yells out that he's going to save his parents. His father yells back, telling him not to, but he ignores him, and runs out of the room to keep the gun his father keeps (illegally) in a drawer in their kitchen. He gets back before the soldiers shoot his parents, and uses the gun to shoot both of the soldiers in their unprotected faces. Entire's parents are taken forcibly to gcourt, and given an unfair trial where they are sentenced to be executed for possession of a weapon and for murdering an officer. Entire is taken to see them executed, and on that day he vowes to overthrow Naeon's corrupt government, and then, the world. The rest of the series takes place when Naeon is 17, but that's like the first chapter, I think. You guys like it so far?
That'd be great. So, I'll get started on those character designs, but do you guys think I should do a storyboard of how the panels lay out for the actual thing, and then the dialogue, like in Death Note, or a script - type thingy?
Sounds good here. I'm going to have to dig out my copy of Manga Studio...unless this is going to be colored? Otherwise I'm a horrible cheater and color the whole thing digitally first then grayscale it in Photoshop, making "tones" that way.
Well...traditionally manga is black and white, the only things coloured are the cover and back cover art, and occasionally several pages of the first chapter or a "dramatic" point in the story. I can probably do background halftones in Photoshop while laying out the pages if it makes it any easier, though.
That's why I'm thinking I'll drag out my old software I got when i was first going OMG mustmakemanganow. However, this was painted using various shades of gray, then layers for highlights and shadows instead of traditional toning. I want to say this took two hours tops.
Nashida, the method you posted sounds interesting. HAve any samples of it, like, in just black and white? Also, I'll have character designs and maybe first chapter storyboard up tomorrow. I'll be at my old computer and scanner by then.
Should we make a social group for this maybe? That way we can keep all storyboards, designs, and any other images in one place?
