Could the Internet ever shut down completly?

Don't worry, if the internet fails.

There's a possibility. I mean the internet relies on bandwidth, doesn't it? If the maximum bandwidth of the whole internet exceeds, we may not see it. But then again, we have the experts to correct that job, so as of now, no it might not be around this time, but there's a possibility it may.

 

i dont want to think of that possibility :(

 

I don't think that it's possible, but in the event that it does happen we are all screwed.

It probably won't fail, barring some uber-terrorist-hacker attack of the millenium, but there is talk of IP Addresses running out. If everyone in the world had internet access, we would not have enough IPs for them, plus all the IPs that had been used in the past. There is a movement to increase the number of IPs with a new system, but it is picking up slowly, which means that once people are forced to use them (through lack of the standard IPs), they will be unable to access a large portion of the internet. I forget where I heard all this, but it was some major news site. I think maybe Foxnews.com.

 

i doubt we could really function without the internet nowadays, especially with all the companies that function through it... a lot of money is made and businesses funtion widely or exclusively over the world wide web, so... we could function, but we would have to adapt majorly to the change and i think the economy may suffer because of it.

 

The world would go nuts.But we could re create it.If it's possible.Do the internet over again.Somebody get Bill Gates out here.Anyway,I don't think that will happen though.Not for atleast hundreds of years or so.Or atleast until the worlds population gets big enough,and there are so any web users.

Bah. It could happen, but I highly doubt that it will.
Unless, the world is ending or something. Or if there was a super terrorist out there somewhere. But even then I doubt that internet ALL OVER THE WORLD would shut down.
That's REALLY unlikely.

But I've thought of this question too.
I've always wondered if it'd happen.
And if it does, what the circumstances would be.

But eh, I don't expect it to happen anytime soon.​

 

Upon further reflection, I think that the Internet collapsing might make for a very entertaining fiction story. I highly doubt, however, that even an uber-terorist-hacker could bring down the onrushing beast that is the internet, as stated in my last post.

 

In order to get the internet completly shut down they would have to shut down every MAJOR server as well as all the little ones that people have build in their homes. So yes the internet COULD be completly shut down but it would take one hell of a program or organization to do it.... so in other words no it will never happen.
