Do you think the media is used to change our thinking?
If you said: no they tell us everything!

Why don't we ever hear of anything ever happening in South America?
In U.S I never hear about a single event happening in South America..

I believe that certain things are controlled by the media, while others did not.

I live in new york, and I never heard a thing about there being a rally in NYC in 2003. Had no idea about it until last month >.>

Well if it is a North American News Paper, I assume that it will focus on NA.

But I have a fair bit of faith in our papers. Recently they illegally revealed information about a terrorist camp over here. Now they are being prosecuted for it.

I suppose this shows the censorship going on. It depends whether you believe the "Right to a fair trial" phrase swung around.

Really, I sort of wish that they would tell us what is going on, although it may be brutal, but atleast the people would know. And if more people knew about the problems, then maybe more people would try to help out. I mean, I never really hear about stuff in South America either.

Of course the media tells you how to think and what to believe. The news (Fox...lol) is a prime example of this. In fact they're probably the best at it in terms of stealth, however people are more aware of it these days.

The media just wants good ratings so they make the biggest deal about the smallest problem. Also, they only put negative things on the news because if it was soft news, nobody would watch it.

The media doesn't change our way of thinking, they influence it. Media may affect how we feel towards a person, or a group of people.

For example, Marla Olmstead was a 4-year-old prodigy painter in 2004. Her reputation was ruined when she was given negative publicity when it was questioned whether or not her paintings were really done by her. Her family was then hated by the general audience. The parents were sent e-mails calling them lairs and that they should go to hell. It's amazing how a single episode of 60 Minutes could affect how a family is viewed.

It's true that censorship affects what we watch on television or what we read on the newspaper. The government chooses what is considered indecent and what's alright for us to watch. They seem to avoid talking about cultural issues, as if it's not our concern.

The media is warped these days, only focusing on Celebrities being unhealthily thin (and approving it - The shame of them!) and also things that they want you to believe its true. Take the hadron collider. Media said we would be dead once it went on. Did it? No.

I remember long ago when I watched Japanese game shows. It lead me to believe that all Japanese were silly and fun loving. I also remember watching Dante's Peak as a kid. It scared the hell out of me and I was afraid to swim in pools. But still, even though I'm not a kid anymore, I and other people will still get influenced my media in this way.

One of the most bashed celebrities in media is Michel Jackson. You can't go anywhere without seeing something that's making fun of him.

Media is controlled. There are higher ups who hold on what we should see and understand and what we shouldn't know. There's not too much you can say about this in a public forum. The thing is, governments are more deeper than you think.

I would say the media is controlled half the time and the other half, they are just putting out razzle dazzle that they think people want to see.

There has been proof throughout the years that the media will show it's support for right or left wing agendas clearly. Also, occasionally the Bush administration and former ones have used the media to relay information to us without labeling it as a source coming from the White House, so it sounds like the media did the work of gathering info. This is actually illegal to do as the media is not 'government' owned. Fox News was used by President Bush to relay media that was written up by the White House but never was announced such. Also, because Obama was in Muslim garb in Kenya as a child, and Hillary's website posted a picture of him, Fox and others bent it way out of proportion. One of the anchors called his little fist bump with his wife a 'terrorist fist jab' and still, we can see on the media that there are old people that believe he is a terrorist. This was clearly slander and he's not even Muslim. Imagine if he were. This is pointless racism.

In the U.S., many of us are not considered to be -smart-. On the news, how often do we see the kooky religious zealots saying lame things about others such as God will kill our soldiers or gays need to die? When something traumatic happens, we are stuck watching the people outside of the tragedy wailing and praying and waiting to find out whether things go successful or not etc while missing on what is actually going on, simply because the media can't 'film' it so it's boring. We get people saying things like 'who's not wearing a pin on his lapel' as being more important than the actual news on the platforms of the two candidates and their VPs. We have tons of media to cover every aspect of our glittery popular icons and they get harassed by tons of paparazzi because people seem to think they live such extraordinary lives. Our news we get mainly comes to us because many people in this country are viewed as stupid and they will believe whatever. They must be hand fed news and seem to only care about the stars, funny jabs at people, who's having an affair, who cheated on who, religious issues, and what to buy for fashion. I could go on and on here.

In the end, if we demanded better news by not watching the crap that is put on those news stations and find better ones or go on the internet and research ourselves, we can change the way the media operates. It is ironic that the CNN website actually has a lot of news on it as does the BBC site, which are not said on the actual station much and is info from around the world. Reuters is also very good with this. If you want news, both good and bad, you have to unfortunately dig around for it and also not just stick with news in your own country. That way you receive angles on it you won't get otherwise. Meanwhile, sad to say, our dumb citizens here will just keep getting more so because they sit at home and do nothing anyway but watch TV.

Maybe it's just me, but I honestly don't believe that the media is controlled. The media is only supposed to deliver news, sometimes its true, sometimes its not. The media also basically publishes their opinion.

And you probably don't hear about South America because it's usually North American based if you live in North America. Also, what are you not hearing about?

It's already been said but, media influences your decision.

i wonder why people always think badly of Fox. it's the same as other news (at least the local one in my city, i dont' know how the other ones are or the cable TV version is). and no one has ever gave me a specific example of when they have actually lied.

i dunno....i think i would rather just stick to TV news then go out of my way to get "real" news and i'm pretty sure i'm not alone on this one.

Why would we be concerned with something that doesn't effect us?

I don't wanna hear if a kid is dying somewhere in South America. I wanna hear about how I can help my country. If it is controlled, let it be controlled, If it effects us, let it be broadcasted so we can do something about it.

Bush is a moron. Obama is the greatest person to walk on the face of the earth. Palin is bit**. McCain is old and cenile. And anything concerning celebrities has to be a story about drugs, alcholol, cheating, divorces, or terrible performances.

But I have no idea what you'r all talking about. I think the media is just gosh darn great-tab-u-rific (A word I heard an anchor say on yesterdays broadcast of "Bush is a moron. Obama is the greatest person to walk on the face of the earth. Palin is bit**. McCain is old and cenile. And anything concerning celebrities has to be a story about drugs, alcholol, cheating, divorces, or terrible performances Channel 13 news."
