Eh. They both have their ups and downs. I find modern rock to have better singers in general(just look at AC/DC and Iron Maiden). Classic Rock is often more memorable because of the fact that artists back then laid the foundations of modern rock/metal/etc. There are so many bands nowadays that can't compare to older stuff, especially songs as amazing as Stairway to Heaven, Fade to Black, *insert famous Beatles song here*, and...well, the list goes on.

As for the effects used for guitars...in Classic Rock the tones were much cleaner(and warmer) than they are now which is usually a plus for the Classic Rock side. If they weren't clean, they were fuzzy...in a good way. I don't listen to Classic Rock much but I know enough about it to make a decent comparison.

Eh...I like both Classic Rock and modern rock but sometimes finding songs/artists that compare to the legends of old is just really hard. In a way, it can be like trying to put bands like Linkin Park, Three Days Grace, Green Day, *insert mainstream band here* to something like Led Zeppelin. Technically speaking, Led Zeppelin would metaphorically rape all of them together. If you like modern rock more than Classic Rock, then it's all good...but saying that they're actually more skilled(depending on the artist) is just blasphemy(unless you're Buckethead...XD).

They're both equally good. I listen to Guns n' Roses on a weekly basis as well as Paramore and Green Day. I make videos with both types of rock. Oh and btw does through the fire and flames count as modern rock?

So, classic rock is grunge, hard rock and thrash metal while modern rock is crappy pop-punk?

I just don't like modern rock much,as much as classic rock, most modern rock bands sounds too much like each other, too generic.
Classical rock like the beatles, nirvana, led zepplin kinda did(and started lol) their own thing.

I like both to be honest. But erm, Modern Rock is awesome. If I had to choose between the two it would definately be Modern Rock. I listen to zillions of bands that can be classified as Modern Rock and I love them to bits.

Shrooms has a point, the music of some bands do sound a lot like each other but not always. I found in Paramore's music (although I love them) some songs start off with almost identical sounds.

OK, two people have mentioned Nirvana, so I have to ask, since when does 90s grunge count as "classic"?

Well I didnt mention the Beatles because it was implied and I used those three bands because im a fan of all three.

When they put Nevermind on he shelves,it changed rock history almost 20 years ago,if you notice-The classic rock examples I have listed have changed rock history but the Modern rock are only making an impact..That's why Nirvana is there...

I take a liking to both in equal amounts.

Interestingly, the first bands that I associated with the term "modern rock" were The Vines, The Hives, The White Stripes and The Strokes. I think everyone has a set of bands that pop into their heads first when they hear talk about "modern rock".

You have a point, but it's at least classic enough to have a "Post-" genre named after it already.

I think that on the whole classic rock was written with more thought than modern rock. Don't get me wrong, bands like Dream Theater and Muse are still writing insanely deep rock songs with a modern feel, but the mainstream of rock today is pop rock and metal, both of which are usually less musically complex. Not to say that there isn't a beauty in simplicity, but I have a bit more respect for artists that put lots of thought into their writing.

That being said, modern rock has more diversity, which is natural; rock started out as one fairly well-defined genre, and over time small ideas evolved into sub-genres, and given the decades since rock's conception, there's been a good amount of time for this evolution to occur. It's really all a matter of personal preference as to which is better.

That has little to do with age, but rather due to the fact that, for the most part, grunge is a dead genre. After all, we don't have post progressive, do we?

The problem with calling grunge classic is that a lot of important "modern" bands have been around since the grunge era or shortly thereafter.

Anyway, my opinion on the subject: I hate trying to determine if music has changed quality in recent years.

There are way too many factors in determining which is better. Are we talking about influence? If so, then very few "modern" bands are noteworthy. Are we talking production quality? If so, then "modern" wins simply due to improved technology and, *sigh*, Auto-Tune.

If you try to argue that modern mainstream sucks, well, it sucked in 60s, too, you simply have more exposure to what's on the radio today as opposed to what was on the radio 40 years ago.

Simply put, music quality has absolutely nothing to do with age, it has more to do with how much effort and creativity is put into making it.

I agree with this. I do some vinyl digging, and I find that it's pretty much the same balance of good and bad throughout the years. Some years have more talented groups. The years vary, but very not much.

Exactly, which is why grunge can be seen as classic. It does have little to do with age and all the more with the viability status of the genre imo. That's just how I see it though.

I'm a modern rock guy. My tastes just happens to fall into that. I have a respect and liking to classic of course.

My tastes really falls into Pop/Punk, Post-Hardcore and more recently Popcore.

Modern music is more diverse these days for reasons already mentioned. Though people do get picky when it comes to classifying bands to certain genres but that's a different complaint all together.

My classic rock only ranges with Queen really. Maybe ELO if that can be counted. I am going to get shot, am I?

I guess I like modern rock also. Looking through this thread I am having doubts about the difference between Modern and Classic.

So I guess they are equal.
