i heard like in europe ( i believe in paris ) there are catacombs under the city. ( incase you don't know what a catacomb is, it's like a maze of tunnels ) is this true?

i would love to go down there, but i would hate to get lost =/

There are were a lot of catacombs in Europe and some in northern Africa. Some were to hide valueables and some where made to hold dead corpses. I think they were some near stonehenge also

I would hate to get lost too. Just think underground screeming for help and no one can hear or see you....scary

The catacombs in Paris are made up mostly of bodies that were dug up from a cemetery called Les Innocents. An ever expanding city needs more space and sometimes not even respect for the dead can overcome the need to expand.

The entrace to the Catacombs is located across from a local metro station and is marked 'Entree des Catacombs.'

This Site can tell you more about the Catacombs in a sort of...'virtual tour'.

Yeah. I heard that in SS. It's pretty cool, but it sounds confusingly scary too.

Most of the catacombs are not open to visitors as it is too dangerous. I think you can only see about 5% of the actual catacombs. As has already been said the city's cemetaries became full to overflowing so they moved hundreds of bodies under ground.

Not exactly, there are loads of bones in shelves in the walls, so it may look like the walls are made of bones, but they aren't really. It wouldn't be strong enough to support the weight of Paris above it :P

there's something like that in Liverpool, England called the williamson's tunnels.

There are tunnels underground that stretch all over the city but only 5% are available to see because they are falling apart and can be very dangerous...

Yea you mostly see catacombs in areas like Europe, Northern Africa, certian cities in asia. But they are less common in the U.S. Mostly used as a service area in those contries or as flood conttol, depending if they have a sluice gate or not. But they aren't as commonly used anymore I don't think or built for that matter.

actually, they were mostly used for storage. mostly of wine and dead bodies. becuz if they tried burying them in regular ground, during floods, bodies would just be found floating around. so they store the bodies in catacombs. and yea they are mazeways.

Not really, and if they do they are not really expansive or very many of them. The U.S. has never need them back in the day since when most cities were built there was an abundance of land for storage

I've always loved the thought of catacombs, however creepy they may be... >w>'

Mostly because I read The Cask of Amontillado by Poe. xD'''

:\ I hope someone mentioned that they weren't just for dead people, but also used as wine cellors.

It's kind of kept secret that most of our major cities especially along the east coast of U.S.A. have these underneath.I was shocked to find this out.The history channel reported that alot of other cities have these as well. The original idea goes way back in history, and they have been found all over the world.

Those on the coast would have been created and used by smugglers to get their goods from the coast inland past all of the patrols.
