Car bomb in London

LONDON: Less than a year after its last major terrorism scare, London was plunged into a new alert early Friday when the police found a car laden with gasoline, nails and gas canisters outside a crowded nightclub and closed down major thoroughfares.
If the car bomb in London's West End theater and nightclub district had detonated, "there could have been significant injury or loss of life" because the area was thronged with "many, many" club-goers and others, said Peter Clarke, Britain's senior counterterrorism police officer.
As the police launched a hunt for the occupants of the car, Clarke also appealed to the public to call in with any information likely to help them.
There had been no information indicating that "we were going to be attacked in this way," Clarke said at a news conference. He added that the police were "keeping an entirely open mind" about the likely identity of suspects.

While many passersby displayed the insouciance of city-dwellers used to high-profile terror alerts, the discovery of the car on the Haymarket, near Piccadilly Circus, left the authorities worried about other potential attacks. "The threat of terrorism is real," Clarke said. "It is here and enduring.The police barred people and vehicles from Park Lane and urged others to leave adjoining Hyde Park because officers were suspicious about a car in an underground parking garage.
A little later, Fleet Street, which leads from central London to the traditional financial district to the east, was also cordoned off. The closures left tracts of central London in gridlock on a busy Friday afternoon when streets are normally packed. Park Lane is the location of some of London's finest hotels.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in power for only two days, urged citizens to be vigilant, particularly in the coming days. He also ordered a meeting of the so-called Cobra group of high-level officials - Cobra stands for Cabinet Office Briefing Room A - to assess the severity of the incident.

"As the police and security services have said on so many occasions, we face a serious and continuous threat to our country," Brown said. "But this incident does recall the need for us to be vigilant at all times and the public to be alert at any potential incidents."

News of the incident broke over Britain's breakfast tables when a police spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said explosives experts had examined a silver-green Mercedes and discovered a "potentially viable explosive device." News organizations quoted witnesses as saying police officers had been seen removing what appeared to be propane gas cylinders and a large number of nails from the car.

Personally, I don't care. But, it's weird that it just started to happen all of a sudden. And I read today on Adelphia Homepage when I went onto the internet. I mean, who would plant bombings in cars?

Just started to happen all of a sudden? Terrorist attacks have been happening for years.. xP So have car bombings.

I hadn't even heard about this, actually.. o.O AND TONY BLAIR ISN'T PM ANYMORE? OMG.

It'll all end when the government stops planting bombs in our cars. n__n

I swear they also said something about biological bombs in london...
They said in an article(i think this year) that the londoners have 45 minutes of doom...
Now I don't know about your opinion, but I think the press is scaring the citizens out...
I mean, when the 7/7 bombings happened, I was doing my ballet exam, and every school near london (mine too) Had to walk home.
