We all know this game. There is but one Captain Midnight, and a group of other people. The people ask Captain Midnight, "Captain Midnight, what time is it?" Captain Midnight gives them a time, and they take that many steps toward the Captain. When Captain Midnight says, "Midnight," everybody runs back to where they stated before Captain Midnight catches them and turns them into more Captain Midnights. But who would've thought that this children's game could turn into such an epic battle of raw nerve and courage?
We played this game during my time as a counselor. I was lying on the hill most of the game, but I happened to look over and see about 15 Captain Midnight's and 8 other people. Watching the round, only four children survived it. The rest of them, including the final counselor, all joined the side of Captain Midnight. And the children that remained were all the more frightened because of it. I could see it in their eyes and increasingly small step size. This is when I made my stand.
Walking over to the children, I shouted in the voice of ten thousand warriors, "DO NOT BE AFRAID, FOR THEY CANNOT DESTROY YOU. BE COURAGEOUS, AND SHOUT IT AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS. CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT," here they joined me in shouting the chant, "WHAT TIME IS IT!?"
I heard a reply from across the valley, "TWELVE O CLOCK!" Strongly I paced like a predator towards prey, shouting out as I stepped, "ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR..." I was already so far ahead of them, but their steps were not as large as mine, brave as they were.
"...TWELVE." I was far in front, but the children were small and could not go as far. It was fine. I then lead them again in shouting, "CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT, WHAT TIME IS IT?!"
"TWELVE O CLOCK!" Aha, they were trying to draw us as far out as possible. Well, I would accept that challenge. Walking in those twelve steps with feet that shook the ground and rumbled like thunder, I approached the team that was Captain Midnight and stopped right behind two of them. I could see them growing more and more nervous in my presence, and without faltering, I shouted in tremendous presence once again, "CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT, WHAT TIME IS IT?!"
They flinched as the sound of my voice violently handled their cochleas, and one of them said "Six o clock!" So their plan was faltering. I walked straight past them, once again announcing my steps as I went.
Upon reaching my sixth step, I turned around to face Captain Midnight and saw two children cowering to the side. Facing them I repeated myself, "DO NOT BE AFRAID, FOR THEY CANNOT DESTROY YOU. BE COURAGEOUS, AND SHOUT IT AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS. CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT," here they joined me in shouting the chant, "WHAT TIME IS IT!?"
"MIDNIGHT!" People ran in every direction. The cowering kids were caught first, for their small, weak steps landed them right next to the Captain Midnights. And as I was surrounded by them on all sides, I knew that there would be no way out.
So I just ran to them.
