When I took an Anthropology class, the professor kept stressing this and that, in his field of study, we're generally talking about sex. He would correct anyone who said "gender." There was a girl who was really smart and the type to raise her hand to answer all the questions, but she was very reluctant to use the word "sex." (I guess she was raised very traditionally). It was always hilarious because he would constantly correct her, but she would never say "sex."

 

Given that it's anthropology I'm going to assume this was a college class, so it's a bit... troubling... that someone old enough to be in college can't say the word sex aloud. But yeah, in pretty much of any of the social sciences or humanities, your prof is going to smack ya with a ruler for confusing the two.

 

I thought he was going to scream at her in one point: "WHY WON'T YOU SAY SEX? SAY IT WITH ME. SSSEEEXXX"

This reminds me, today in my Breaking Bad class (it's a legit ethics/philosophy class so don't start) my prof yelled penis really loudly. Got a laugh out of me but in fairness we were discussing Freud.

Freud would probably have done the exact same thing while staring into a painting of his mum.

Probably the WEIRDEST thing about Freud though was that he was responsible for the push of toilet training becoming a norm??? Granted, this was all because he was like "you're child will be heavily repressed/super disgustingly lax depending on if you scream at them to poop or don't make them poop (respectively)," so not entirely without it's share of humor, but still pretty out there.

 

Freud in general is just NUTS, admittedly I have little to no understanding of psychology (I have somehow not taken a course in it yet?) but he comes up a lot in psychoanalytic literary criticism and in gender & philosophy classes. So I don't feel qualified in saying this but it's my understanding that he had some good ideas but the majority of his theories are just ???? these days

I've also read a bit of Nancy Chodorow which is always a good laugh if you find calling Freud out on his misogynistic BS funny
