So, now that the PS3 has been out for a while and is being sold used for cheap, I'm considering getting one. c:

What I need some help on is which one to buy. The Gamestop by me has:
    - 40GB for $230
    - 80GB (Backwards Compatible) for $300 Eliminated because I don't need B/C.
    - 80GB for $250

Additionally, my friend's boyfriend is willing to sell his to me. I know it's a slim, he's checking how many gigs it is and then giving me a price.

I do intend to keep my PS2 so I don't think that the backwards compatibility would be that big a deal to me. It'd be nice but I'm not really going to pay extra for it, you know?

What I'm really not sure about is how much hard drive space I'll actually need, or if I should get a slim. What are the differences between the fat and the slim, besides the obvious?

Overall I just need advice on what to get. xD

I'd go with the 80GB that's $250, which is only $20 more than the cheapest one that you listed.

First of all, you want as much HDD space as possible.
    Because;
    - There are many updates
    - There are many required installations
    - If you want to purchase games digitally, you will need quite an amount of space

    Design differences;
    - Slim is deeper (like a square)
    - Can't stand up vertically without extra equipment.
    - Slim is not shiny

There are not too many differences between fat and slim. What I have heard though, is that it might be a bit faster (load time, not too much). Also, it's supposedly quieter.
I have a 250GB Fat, and I'm very happy about it. Though I've used slim at friends' and works perfectly as well.

I would recommend getting the one with the largest HDD, regardless of Fat or Slim.

Also, if you have a PS2, Backwards compability is not necessary, but it might be handy. Depends on if you're lazy or not.

    Hope this helps :)

That's what I figured, though I didn't really account for updates & DLC for some reason. xD I was just thinking that in the probably nine years I've had my PS2 (oh god has it really been that long) I've only had two memory cards, 8MB each, and that's worked fine. xD

Looks really don't concern me too much, right now my TV set up in my bedroom (where the PS3 would go) is pretty ugly--though maybe if I had a nice looking console in there I'd be tempted to change it up.

I really don't care about backwards compatibility to be honest, since as I said, I plan to keep my PS2 nearby. I am lazy but not that lazy that I can't hit a few buttons when I want to play a different game, haha.

I also have a question regarding headsets--do you absolutely need one to play online, or can you without it? Either way I'd like to have one, so if anyone has any cheap but good ones to recommend it'd be greatly appreciated. :3

    9 years? Wow, you're lucky.

Starting from when I got my first PS2 as a birthday present from my dad, the first one being the fat one, we've had to get a new one every two years or so.

I'd have to agree with the 80gig for $250...
$20 extra for an extra 40gig memory is too good a deal in my opinion.
Personally, I have the original 60gig PS3 (B/C) ((I know they don't sell it anymore.. XD)) and it's never caused me a problem, but I tend to use my PS2 more for the other games anyway. :/
So, I'd say the 80gig, whether slim or not is a good buy for sure.

And yeah, Noroz pretty much covered the differences between a slim and a normal.
Depending on the mem and price of your friend's boyfriends one... that could be a good deal.
But we won't know until he finds out the details for you.

Trust me, you will need a big HDD ;) I'm not certain if 80GB will suffice, but it probably will. Keep in mind though, Sony has always a lot of updates to PS3.
You do not need a HeadSet to play online at all. In some games, such as Left4Dead2 it is preferred, and sometimes you won't even get a group if not (they will kick you out.) It really depends on the game though, in coop games it is of course preferred. I'm not certain if you can hook up a normal USB HeadSet to the PS3 though, but it might be very possible. The PS3 HeadSet (Standard one) is Bluetooth if I'm correct, and you will have to buy it separate.

Personally, I think the Fat one is prettier. Also, you can easily change the HDD in it, as shown That's what I figured, though I didn't really account for updates & DLC for some reason. xD I was just thinking that in the probably nine years I've had my PS2 (oh god has it really been that long) I've only had two memory cards, 8MB each, and that's worked fine. xD Looks really don't concern me too much, right now my TV set up in my bedroom (where the PS3 would go) is pretty ugly--though maybe if I had a nice looking console in there I'd be tempted to change it up. A bit of an update:
My friend got more details from her boyfriend (she was on vacation for a while so it took some time). It is an 80GB Fat PS3, and he's willing to include Soul Calibur 4 and the first Assassin's Creed game for $200. c: Think that's what I'll go with! Thanks everyone for the help. Going to leave this open until I actually buy this, since I might have more questions.

I disagree with what Noroz said. You don't need alot of space for your PS3. My first PS3 had only 40GB and it worked fine. Even when I filled it with videos, music and lots of games. I can understand getting more room for your hard drive if you're a hardcore gamer with many games or if you plan to download as many things as possible. But for someone like you, who seems to like playing games casually, this isn't the case. 80GB will be enough for years to come. I have a Slim 320GB model now and I doubt I will ever run out of space anytime soon.

As for your deal, it's a nice one. My 40GB was 400$. So getting a 80GB for half the price with two games is not something you should turn down. But be careful to take good care of it. Don't let it overheat or flick the power switch on and off like I did. It has a higher chance of getting the yellow light compared to the Slim PS3 model. And if you're buying it from a friend, you have no warranty to fall back on.

Lastly, if you're interested in buying a mic for gaming, it depends on how much you're willing to spend. I bought the Official PS3 Bluetooth Headset for 40$ and it works really well. Obviously the more expensive headsets are a bit better, but probably not worth the price for you. The Turtle Beach headsets have better quality for the price. For lower priced ones, try the Rocketfish Bluetooth Headset. If you prefer wired headsets, then look for the wired version of the ones I just told you.
