Jake shrugged. "Maybe I should start wearing a helmet." He ran a hand through his hair. "But then i'd risk helmet hair."

"Wow...I finally found your one true fear; helmet hair." Alyce smirked and continued walking, still glancing at her feet occasionally.

 

"Hey. Helmet hair is no joke." He laughed, keeping an easy pace next to her as they crossed the courtard.

 

"As I don't have the bike that escaped death, I never get helmet hair." Alyce replied. "Actually, riding your motorcycle was the first time I'd ever been on one."

 

"Could've fooled me. You rode like you had all your life. When I took my little sister on for the first time she..." Jake cut himself off, wincing a little. "Never mind." He muttered.

 

"You have a little sister?" Alyce asked before she could stop herself.

 

"No...I don't...I had a little sister..."

Alyce looked at the photo silently for a moment. Had...

"She was probably lucky to have a brother like you." Alyce finally said, not really sure what to say.

 

Jake shrugged silently, shoving his hands in his pockets and sniffing.
"What about you? You say you have siblings? What are their names?"

 

"A little brother and a little sister. The banes of my existance; Emily and Chase." Alyce smiled faintly. "Let's see...Emily's 14, and Chase is 10, turning 11 in a few days. They're both insane, and they're always following me around since Dad's busy a lot."

 

Jake laughed. "That doesn't sound so bad." He thought for a moment. "And...your mom?"

 

Alyce frowned. She'd never told anyone what had happened to her mom, but she figured if she didn't tell Jake, he'd get it out of her eventually. "She left."

 

Jacob frowned in concern. "You must miss her."
He thought about his own family, all killed in that fire. He knew he missed his family. He was sure she missed her mother.

 

"I do...I just wish she missed me." Alyce muttered softly. "I don't even know where she is. She took off one night on us and never came back."

 

Jake squeezed her hand. "It's hard to beleive that anyone wouldn't miss you."

 

Alyce smiled wryly and laughed lightly. "You know, the night I left, Emily told me she wanted to come with me because she thought something bad would happen. She seriously planned to hide in my room and live there."

 

"Man was she right." Jake grinned. "But thing's here aren't all bad."

 

"Yeah, they're not that bad. You're kind of annoying though." She grinned to show him she was kidding.
