Note: There are other threads about this band, but they're all really old, and I thought a fresh one should be made because of their new album and such. if this is not allowed, you can close this, and I'm sorry I broke any rules. So, this band is my all-time favorite. I absolutely adore them. Their music has helped me through almost everything in my life, I've grown up listening to them and when they broke up when I was in fifth grade, I was devastated, and when they got back together my freshman year, I was so happy, I couldn't even contain my excitement. I've been there through everything that has ever happened to that band(besides them forming of course), even when Travis Barker joined and Scott Raynor was booted out. I remember when Travis Barker was in that plane crash in '09 as well. I was four years old when I first saw them live, and, I don't remember much, just the lights and sounds, the band name, and a few choice words that my mom punished my uncle for. It was back when Scott was still their drummer as well. But anyway, I've literally listened to them my entire life, and their music pretty much defines my humor, my mindset, and my entire musical taste, ha. So anyway, is there anyone else here who likes them? I think they're great, even their new album, though, I will admit, I found alot of the lyrics really cheesy, and Tom didn't seem to put as much effort into it as he did his new Angels and Airwaves album. Back on track though, what was your favorite Blink album, and do you guys like them?
Yeah, I think the last actual this thread is about blink-182 and not one of their albums/side projects is from 2006 and is now closed so it's kewl. I don't have nearly the history you do with them; I was in elementary school when their songs were being played on the radio and I remember finding them really catchy, but I never really did much about it? haha. A bit too young I guess. As I got into middle school I started listening to a song or two, and then started getting into them more fully, due in no small part to some of the members of this site, actually, haha. I don't listen to them quite as much as I used to these days, they're mostly one of the nostalgia bomb bands for me. I own all their major albums, save for Neighborhoods, which I gave a listen to but I didn't find it to be that impressive. I'm not certain I could really choose a favorite album of theirs, though--they're all pretty unique and great. My favorite song by them will always be 21 Days though, if I remember correctly it was on Buddha? It's just so... raw. It's a ridiculously early song and it's just fun to hear where they started. I never got a chance to see them live, by the time I got into them they'd already broken up, and I haven't gone to any of their tours since then. I did really like +44's album, it got a bit same-y at times but there were some really solid tracks on there. I wasn't too big on I-Empire but We Don't Need to Whisper was really sweet as well. <3
21 Days is great. Everything off of Buddha was amazing. i feel like their lyrics were better back then as well. For my birthday in March I'm getting a couple of piercings, and a tattoo on my hand of the lyrics "I won't be living in yesterday" from the song My Pet Sally Ah, if you like Angels and Airwaves, you should hear their brand new album, Love part 2, it's the best I've heard from them since the whisper record. I love +44, but at the same time, I can't really listen to them too easily. Most of the songs Mark had written were about the blink breakup. No it Isn't and Chapter 13 were both specifically about Tom, and it just makes me horribly sad to listen to the whole album. Mark released No It Isn't on Tom's birthday as well, just to make sure he heard it. Just ah, the breakup was rough, even for me because that band was there for me through divorce, abuse, and all sorts of stuff, and hearing how hurt Mark was, and how indifferent Tom was when he made Angels and Airwaves was hard. Not that I prefer one of them over the other, I love them both, haha. They're my favorite musicians, however terrible they may be at their instruments, of all time. Mark Hoppus inspired me to start playing bass as well.
I honestly love all their lyrics, and I find it hard to compare them. I think each album had really unique writing, despite sometimes sounding same-y. The early songs off of Buddha do definitely have some of the more memorable lyrics for me, but something horrible inside me can't put them above a song like Dysentery Gary. 21 Days has more meaningful lyrics, but Dysentery Gary makes me laugh. If that makes any sense at all. I actually had no idea they came out with anything after I-Empire, haha. Yeah, I mean it's definitely some pretty loaded stuff, and rightfully so--being so separated from someone you were so close to. But I try to listen to it both in and out of context--in context being "okay, what does this reveal about the writer's (Mark's) relationship with the subject (Tom)?", out of context being "the song is about having a fight with a friend and that point you hit where you honestly don't want to even look at them again." And then you think about how that applies to your life? Sometimes it's just good to detach the writer and think about what the song means to you, I guess, haha. I can't play instruments for **** but seeing him play Carousel is pretty impressive.
I totally get what you're saying about detaching it from context. My favorite song off of the +44 record is Weatherman for that exact reason. It's so sad, and I can relate so well. And you should really check out Love part 2. Love was a boring album, but it's worth a listen as well I think. They also came out with a movie recently, also titled Love. It's been nominated for alot of film festival awards and the like. And omg every time I see Blink live, and they play Carousel, I always yell at whoever I'm with, "I wonder if he'll get the intro to Carousel right!" it's always awesome to see them live.
