My god. I want to facedesk so hard right now for my stupidity.

AVI is a generic package that you can put on a wide variety of videos. Aside from auxiliary features that I'm not planning on using, the extension is nothing more than an easy way of identifying the codec used.

So in terms of the format war AVI wins quality- if you want the insanely huge uncompressed files. Since I have no intention of of uploading 40GB video files and I'm not sure any computer can handle processing a video at 170MB/s anyway, that won't be the wisest choice.

So I've confirmed mp4 in that way. I'm testing mkv now. I can't find a mov encoder off hand but I haven't searched that hard yet. Any other variations you people want?

    EDIT:mkv is good

The only problem with .mkv would be that it would be for strictly viewing purposes. As far as I know, there are no video editing software that supports it and very few players in general that do. VLC and Media Player Classic + cccp codec are the only ones I can think of and they aren't perfect.

True. It can't be used for editing and it is for viewing purpose but the thing is that it can be converted into a format that is editable and still have amazing quality. There are some extra steps that need to be taken for it to be editable but I personally think that the payoff is worth it. Plus we already have some decent quality files that people can use if they don't wanna go through the hassle. MP4 files can also be encoded in x264/h264 but then again they're just like .mkv files and are only meant for viewing purposes. Unless you're on a Mac, then they're editable.

Unfortunately yes with mkv you just watch the videos (I'm not sure if they can be used in Sony vegas though?). But we could have two 2 kinds of links, medium quality and high quality. The high quality would be the mkv ones, and the medium quality would be the ones we have now.
Plus, we could have guide for those who want to make amv's with the high quality videos, as to how to convert them to a supported format for editing (even with a lossless codec) with virtualdub or some other way. Actually someone who knows what to use can just cut his clips in vrtualdub and save them so they don't take up lots of space (a single cutscene will take quite a few gigabytes uncompressed), and then use them in WMM.
