Think of where you posted this and how much we're criticized for encouraging people to talk like this.

 

The guy was being a patronizing douchetool. I don't think you want to encourage that.

That doesn't make it right, nor does it make your response unreasonable (though intent and context matter here)

An assertion does look objective, duh, but care should be taken not to make opinions into assertions in cases where courtesy is called for

For somebody to challenge that in a respectful way doesn't make them a douchetool, it makes them a reasonable human being

I was just demonstrating how self important and unpleasant it seems when people use language as was used in that post. If you don't understand why that poster was not being respectful to anyone else and rather choosing to look down his nose and disparage other people's opinions, then there is nothing more to discuss.

 

Several problems with this.

1. 'I'm sure you're speaking objectively' is much more abrasive than 'you seem to be speaking objectively'.
2. You are criticizing/demonizing (note the dogmatism) a praise of forethought with condescension. The comment you are mocking was questioning (note the affability) a blatantly derisive assertion about quality with courteous suggestions of a change in perspective.
3. You are intentionally calling out the person who attempted to peacefully temper the situation but ignored the person who blatantly went out of their way to tear others down.
4. You are bad at being condescending.

2. It doesn't seem like they are being courteous to me. It seems like they are trying to "handle" this person. They're treating someone else like they are less than them by trying to manipulate them with less direct language rather than simply telling them their own opinion on the matter or better yet, dropping the comment and letting this whole thing go. As I may or may not have done in a more ideal universe.
3. I'm calling him out because I wanted his explanation because he posted it and no one else in the tread was comprehending his point, which does indeed lead my to believe that he's wrong in making it.

2. All of that sounds like you projecting yourself into the situation and imagining what would drive you to say those things. Projecting is not wise. You cannot assume that others are like you, even for pretend. You will be wrong the vast majority of the time.

3. Sounds like you understood what he meant perfectly well to me. There is no evidence that others agree with your perception of the second comment, only that they do not understand. But even then, it's not a majority. Let's count (not including the OP):

Get it: PaW, Aqua101, below, Makaze, Shadowjak (5)
Don't get it: hatok, Jiku Neon, Hayato (3)

But wait... Two don't get it. You think you do. So it's actually:

Think it's intentionally harmful: Jiku Neon (1)

I don't like entertaining arguments from majority opinion because most people can be and often are wrong, but you don't even have the majority opinion you claim to have. Don't let yourself fall into the trap of believing in what you say because others appear to agree. They didn't explicitly state that they agree but even if they did that would still be a terrible reason to gain confidence.
