My aunt dropped her computer off at my house earlier hoping I could get rid of the virus that's on it. It looks to be in the same vein as most of the other fake virus protection viruses -- pops up claiming the computer is infected with a bunch of things that don't exist, then asks that I pay money to get it fixed. Complete scam and makes the computer nearly unusable.

This iteration appears to be called "Best Virus Protection," and I did some research on it and this one apparently makes changes to the registry/disables some important functions so that a system restore won't do the trick. I'm a little lost because researching it nets me a bunch of different sites that recommend different things, none of which I am certain are worth trusting. So I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Does anyone know a good way to get rid of this bug? Any help is highly appreciated.

I've had this problem before but it was easily removable. It's a malware that hides inside hidden files and edits your registry keys so that when you restart or try and system restore it comes back

I recommend that you follow this guide as I did and your problem should be fixed. Scroll down a bit and follow the instructions.
Malwarebytes is a great scanner and cleans alot of viruses. I believe Misty would also recommend it.

Malwarebytes indeed is the way to go; normal virus scanners may pick it up and help, but 90% of the time Malwarebytes will get rid of it. You can download it for free from here.

Now, these viruses can be tough because they will often disable much of your user privileges. If you can, download the installer on her computer and try to run it--if it goes through, run a full scan and remove whatever threats it detects. If you can't, download the installer (or, if it's disabled the internet/redirects you when you try to go to the Malwarebytes website, put it on a flash drive) and turn off the computer. When it reboots (I'm assuming it's running Windows), log in and quickly hit CTRL+ALT+DEL & open up task manager. Let the computer boot normally, and then kill any process that looks fishy to you--they're usually just a string of numbers, if they're not named. Then run the installer, full scan, and you should be able to remove it.
