Actually, SAO did come first. The light novels were around way before .hack//.

.hack// is still the superior thing. It's rare for the something be better than what it's ripping off, but .hack// is so good that it did it anyway.

 

To be honest the second part of SAO creeped me out a little...

 

Hey, it's at least better than You've Got Mail. As dumb as that premise is, SAO did it right.
