I know I'm a bit late getting into the PS3 market, what with the PS4 right around the corner, but I've only recently been able to breathe a little bit and have some extra cash floating around. After some basic research, I've found that there are 3 models, the Fat (which has the fabled ability to play PS2 games [although I doubt I'll ever get rid of my PS2]), the Slim (which I think is a bit faster and more quiet, in exchange for no more PS2 games) and the Super Slim (silent as the grave and apparently cheap feeling?) What's everyone's experiences with the PS3 consoles and what do you think would be the best value?
If you can find one, get one of the fat models that can run PS2 games. It upscales them, so games like KH2 look damn pretty on it. The thing is, they're rare. So if you DO find one, it might be worth more than you paid down the line Otherwise, I'd say just go for a slim. They have more memory generally, and from what I've heard they don't have as frequent overheating problems as the fat model Of course, it also depends on how many games you plan on getting . Like if this is just for like KH1.5 and a few others, I'd say try and keep it cheap One last thing, not ALL fat models can run PS2 games, so keep an eye out
Get a newer one. As you've said, you still have a PS2. You can also emulate PS2 games on most newer computers nowadays with few problems, so needing to buy a system for PS2 is silly.
As others have mentioned, not all fats are backwards compatible. I have a fat 80GB and it isn't. Most Gamestops will mark the BC ones (and charge extra for it), so check your local ones to see what they have. You might also want to try eBay or Craigslist (though I don't like buying expensive electronics off of either). If your heart is really set on a BC model then by all means keep your eyes open. If you don't care that much about backwards compatibility, there's no reason to get a fat, aside from maybe them being cheaper. However, you're probably going to end up upgrading the hard drive in the fat somewhere down the line (especially if you subscribe to PS+), so you may not be saving money at all in the long run. Kotaku's Moneysaver often features discounted PS3s or PS3 bundles. You should take a look. The deals are posted everyday Monday - Friday and they'll usually last around a week. I don't think there's really an advantage of the slim vs. the super slim besides aesthetics & larger hard drive options.
Okay, I'll take a look at that link Misty, thank you! And so I'm clear with this, I wouldn't be able to play KH2:FM on any of the American PS3s at all, would I? (Or the translated version either, since that's getting into burned/backup territory).
No, you wouldn't be able to. Until KH 2.5 comes out (which presumably will have KH2FM and BBSFM) at least. :b
That's true I suppose. Thanks everyone for the replies! I'm still a bit torn between the BC-Fat Ps3 or a Slim Ps3. Is one considerably louder than the other? And is there anyway to prevent the YLOD from ruining my console once I've bought one?
I have a fat Ps3, but mine isn't BC.. it has 160 gigas though, what is nice, but not as nice as the 500g they are getting now! To be safe I would go with a Slim , because is a new model , so the lens aren't used, and it will probably endure more time! My Ps3 does not make that much noise (don't know if I am used to it?), you won't notice while playing.. I think the fat is gorgeous, so you could buy it for the aesthetics! Don't buy the SUPER SLIM THOUGH! It is made from cheaper material, and the only way it wont make sound is if you put it vertically, when is in the horizontal position it makes sounds (maybe touching the case?).[DOUBLEPOST=1377496754][/DOUBLEPOST]I have a fat Ps3, but mine isn't BC.. it has 160 gigas though, what is nice, but not as nice as the 500g they are getting now! Hmm I like the old fat model the best. I have the 40gb PS3 (should've gotten the 60, but w/e). I think it looks the best because of its shiny exterior and the limited editions it came out with it. I believe the MGS4 was a grey PS3 with a picture of Snake on it. Though it is quite loud, I'm still content with the old model.
The fat is markedly louder than the slim, though that's really only a problem if you live in a warmer area and can't keep your console cool
I've never really noticed the sound from my fat PS3. Once I have a game going the sound of the fans is kind of drowned out by the audio, and I can be very particular about sounds from electronics ( I used to unplug my desktop every night because I could hear it even when it was off ). The big thing is the heat. I live on Long Island so it gets both pretty hot and pretty cold here--during the winter the thing is like a space heater, during the summer it can make my bedroom that much warmer. So if you live in a hotter climate that is definitely something to consider.
The sound thing becomes more and more of an issue the smaller a space you work with, my PS3, TV and me all share roughly the same area, which causes the noise to be more of a problem
