Hmm wasn't actually sure what to call this, but meh.
As we know, most KH games have different ways of obtaining commands and abilities and levelling them up. Which game do you think has the best system of doing so?

For me personally I really liked BBS' way of doing it. Huge fan of the Command Board and if you know how to meld commands properly you can get some sweet as abilities (like EXP walk hehehe).

Having recently finished BBS and just started DDD, I can't really say I'm a fan of DDD's. Don't get me wrong, I love giving my spirits some TLC, but it's time consuming. Even using those games is just like ugh, effort.

I was also a fan of the panel system in Days. It seemed like a pretty easy way to level up

It's been a while since I played the other games, so I can't really have an opinion on them without sounding like a dummy.

Anywho, which game did you think was the best in terms of getting commands and levelling them up?

Just for a recap: There are the KH1/KH2 Command Menu, which has Attack, Magic, Item, Drive, Summon, Party, and Limit. Then KH:COM has it's Card thing (The Bane Of My Existence) and then in the rest of the games, there is the Command Deck.

I think out of all of them, the games on the Handhelds are the easiest. But there are other factors I guess. Like if you suck at playing handheld but play awesome on a Console. Or if you're not used to the way the handheld system works and like one of the other ones better. Making attacks in BBS is simple, since you put 2 attacks in to make a better one. And then with certain attacks you gain certain abilities and all that fun stuff. In 3D you have to get certain Dream eaters for abilities and it's a bit annoying. I think BBS was totally easier. In Kingdom Hearts 1/2 you had to use AP for the abilities, while in BBS and 3D you just kind of added them once, and then you could add them 5 more times or 2 depending on what it was. You would have to do certain things to get more power on them. It also isn't hard to make powerful commands in BBS, because you just use whatever the Unversed drop and anything else you can find, potions stuff like that. In KH 1/2 You just kind of, level up and get them. It is a struggle to free up AP though, unless you buy AP Rings. There are probably other things I'm missing here, but this is what I can think of XD

i agree. bbs had the best command system ever. i especially like how you could change into different command styles or execute finishers by repeated usage of certain commands!! hope kh3 will have more or less the same command system like bbs. DDD would have been much more awesome if they had kept heartless and nobodies and without a party and with command styles like bbs.

I'm kind of between BBS's system and the classic system of KH1 and 2. Overall, I'd say BBS was a better and more efficient way to manage the way your character fights but for the 1&2 system I will say that I liked the way you had access to all of your magic at once and had to manage your use of it with the MP gauge during battle.

    Birth by Sleep, hands down.

But in order, I'd say Birth By Sleep > KH: DDD > KH2 > KH: FM > Re: COM > 358/2 days.

I actually didn't find shot locks useful at all, I never used them. That would be my only downside to BBS. The other thing I never used is D-Links, because once you get stonger they're kinda useless IMO

But I did like how you used magic in KH1. The MP gauge was good, and you could use your magic commands more than once at a time. KH2 I believe you had to wait for it to reload to use magic again. Correct me if I'm wrong

Really? Not even at the Zack or Terranort boss battles?

That's kinda hard to believe. What difficulty were you on?

Yup. In KH2, you could use spells like Fire and Blizzard over and over because they didn't take up the entire gauge. Cure spells were one-use-then-wait. The gauge would only refill once it was empty. KH1, the gauge refilled while you fought.

I like both. In KH1, it was very satisfying to fill the gauge by utterly destroying enemies. However, in KH2, it was more convenient. If you were crazy low on health during a boss battle, it's much easier to dodge and wait for the gauge to fill than it is to go in, attack and retreat before being hit. Also, if there were no enemies about and you needed to Fire spell this wall, KH2's system was simpler.

I really loved Birth by Sleep's gameplay. If you wanted you could pretty much ignore the Command Board, but it was great fun once you got into it. D-Links I agree were pretty useless, but the rest was gold. I think the Chain of Memories card system was just too complex for me, so BBS was a nice compromise--you had to put thought into composing your deck and melding commands, but it wasn't as "get this perfect or you die" as Chain of Memories.

Shot locks seemed overpowered at times, but against the tougher bosses they were handy yet balanced. The Command Styles were fun once you learned how to take advantage of them.

That said, I think Kingdom Heart II is really strong if a little too easy. It's just damn fun to play.

Terra on standard, Ven on proud, Aqua on critical.

I only used shotlocks for Ven's final boss battle

You think so? I thought the rule of thumb for making decks in CoM was to use 0 cards to attack & break all combos, and just dodge roll/glide the **** out of everything else haha. At least for most boss battles.

Huh. I found it really hard to use shotlocks in any Vanitus battle. The guy doesn't leave many openings. But against most Mirage Arena boss battles, shotlocks were very clutch for me.

I'd definitely agree that D-Links were mostly pointless. The only one I ever really used to any effect was Mickey's. The EXP boosting ability made grinding for level ups faster. ;)

As much as I loved the flow of the BBS/3D style systems, I think they just make the game way too easy. You find some broken commands, and then you spam them...that's the game. Level 1 Critical Mode on 3D? No problem, just spam Balloonga all day. Basically the only possible challenge those games have is playing without using commands, which is impossibly boring.

So personally, I'm a really big fan of KH2/KH2FM's systems.

I loved the way BbS handled things. You actually had to work to get some of the best commands. I loved going to all the worlds to farm commands and figure out what new ones I could meld together. Took bloody ages to get them all but it was fun as hell.

That is true, but it takes a lot of CP to have a deck like that. Not only do you need a lot of zero cards (which are hard to find and have a high CP cost), but you also need standard attack cards to actually do damage.

But 0 cards actually do do damage if you're in the right proximity.

Haven't actually played BBS (watched walkthroughs) or COM yet, but of the ones I've played:

    Re:Coded/KH3D > KH1FM > KH2 (vanilla) > KH: Days

Re: Coded was a lot of fun, and you could meld commands and level them up by fighting and by fusing them together. I also really liked the Overclock, or whatever the proper name is, feature where you get some abilities as you fight for a certain period of time. It could turn the tide in battles or just make things all the more interesting. May have the blandest story of all the games, but it's one of the most fun for me. :b

KH3D has Flowmotion and it's so fun to just zoom around and really explore each area. KH1FM's new abilities are really cool, and while I'll probably put KH2FM gameplay before it when 2.5 releases, it's still really nice to go around and Zantetsuken the poo out of a Heartless. Days, despite having the better story of it & Re:Coded, probably had the worst gameplay for me. Panels were awful to customize and the missions made the gameplay feel really repetitive.

Have yet to play Birth By Sleep completely. I played a bit of it and I agree with the thread that it certainly has one of the nicest combat systems.

In terms of games fully played, DDD's combat system was the most appealing to myself. It felt fluid and combined the best of a number of other games from what I had seen, and I did not see much of a problem in helping train the spirits. Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 are on the same level about, perhaps with Kingdom Hearts 2 a tad lower due to excessive reaction commands. Chain of Memories was fun, but I cannot quite say with happiness that I found the battle system itself fun rather than very frustrating at times. But alas.

My favorite would have to be BBS. I loved the command deck system, and how each command can bring you into a command style. I also love the different finishing attacks. The shot locks were also pretty fun. It's also great to meld commands and see what you end up with. I agree though that D-links were next to useless. The only time I ever use them is when I'm running out of life, and I don't have a potion or cure ready.

DDD also had a fun command system though taking care of spirits, and playing with them was incredibly tedious and time consuming. It's was fun to link with them though. The flowmotion and reality shift were some of the best parts, in my opinion. In KH2, the best part would have to be the drive modes. The reaction commands, I think worked well, if used at the right times. It also made the boss fights a bit more interesting.
