Beginning to watch SAO Season 2

And I certainly like how they made it more based on the real world characters and their problems instead of other things, but......did they really have to blatantly rip off lightsabers?

I don't think Star Wars exclusively has the market on laser swords. Besides, apparently in-universe the laser sword isn't that good of a weapon.

 

Not saying they have a market, but come on, it has the exact same look, not too mention, the exact same sound effect. I could swear they copied and pasted something onto the show and called it something else. Plus, Kirito finds a way to make it a good weapon. They're all just tools; the user is the one that makes the tool good

 

That's not exactly against any copyright laws. The lightsaber sounds are not copyrighted so it is well within their right to use them.

Besides, the original idea for laser blades didn't come from Star Wars, surprisingly enough. Popularized it, but didn't come up with it.

Also, it is sad I can't seem to find a good explanation on the internet as to what makes Kirito a Mary Sue/why he is a Mary Sue. :C

 

It's still a video game, where all items have stats that determine their effectiveness. that's like saying "I'm a level 100 Barbarian, so I can take this stick and beat anyone because I'm level 100." No. That's not how it works.

 

I'm not saying that, but don't forget that SAO kind of has different games than us, so that should be taken into account. Plus, they mentioned there were better guns and stuff, but he still managed to make it work, because remember how your skills in game were based on skills in real life? That's how he can use it so well

I would like SAO a lot more if they didn't constantly make Kirito the best just because he's the hero.

 

Is it that hard to think it up personally?

• He has a very generic male anime protagonist look: fair skin, not fat or exceptionally skinny, not exceptionally short or tall, short dark hair, dark eyes, no distinguishing marks or disfigurations.
• He has no unique quirks or combination of quirks (which are peculiar behavioral traits that help make characters unique from each other in personalities.)
• He never seems to make a mistake that he learns from (the party he was with that died...what exactly did that teach him?)
• He has NO chemistry with Asuna, yet they get married in a video game and have a surrogate daughter in Yui (personally, this really was inappropriate for the story.)
• He easily gains the affection of multiple female characters in (what I found to be) unrealistic ways, yet he's supposed to be an average gamer.
  
• In Season 2, rather than learn to use a new weapon, he instead sticks to a sword, showing stagnation rather than trying something new.
• Why of COURSE he drives a motorcycle; it's the go-to "badass vehicle."

There's more, but those are the main things that make me hate Kirito.

No, but people don't seem to say why they think he is a Mary Sue. Just that he is a Mary Sue. :\

Obviously the lesson wasn't "Maybe I should tell people I grind like crazy to get to a high level. Seems like something important to tell people who I team up with."

Apparently it was, "I AM ZE LONE WOLF."

This wouldn't be so bad if we saw more of the GGO fights he was in and that while he did win he nearly died because charging forward with a sword towards gunfire doesn't equal good strategy.

I honestly thought for a few episodes he was driving a scooter. :\

He is very much a wish fulfillment character; essentially the male anime fan equivalent to Bella Swan. He is written so blandly so that the reader can put themselves into the role. That does not mean the character is someone relatable, it's just poor writing. I mean, Kirito is an automatic badass, his own harem, and rides a motorcycle. They're all ingredients to what it means to be cool, something that a lot of people probably want for themselves.
