I enjoyed to watch my sister shave all there hair off and stick pins in them and graffiti(sp?) them. If we didn't have barbies or any dolls like that then what would little girls play with? I know a few little girls who would die without barbies. I never really noticed how skinny they were when I liked them (7 years ago!)

    Exactly!

LOL I used to love Barbie when I was little but my parents would never let me play with them because of the whole message they send out to little girls. So I used to play with Sonic instead lol that probably explains why I'm a bit of a tomboy at heart still like girly stuff though.

I think Barbie takes Girly-ness to the extreme.

What about Action Man? Do guys think Action Man had made life tough for them?

PS if you're anti Barbie check this site out: http://www.adiosbarbie.com/ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EExxuL0Wik8

I still can't believe barbie is still going, they made scooters and roller skates a while back and I was just O.o I never realised how bad of a role model they were until I looked at my sisters old one with the pins in it and I totally agree that they are a bad role model.

Yep, pretty bad model. She has some nice outfits though. XD Better than Bratz though, I'll admit, simply because the name "Barbie" does not connotate something negative in every sense of the word.

Well I'm not too "up to date" in this sort of thing....but wasn't it true that when Barbie first came out, all "women were good for" were being that type of person?

Problem is media tradition and sticking to old stereotypes.

But yes, I do agree thatBarbie and Bratz (Bratz is worse in my opinion, the name itself already has terrible connotations) are ****ty role models for girls everywhere.

Barbie can do anything...so of course girls need model scooters and skates and all that junk. Hello Kitty is no different. They have Hello Kitty everywhere. I will say that I am ...sad(?)...can't think of the word...to see Barbie newer dolls looking akin to Bratz. No one needs more of those stupid dolls or ripoffs and just because Barbie has done everything, doesn't mean she now has to be spoiled rotten too. =:)

I hate both Bratz and Babie and yea, they are bad role models, but hey, if someone thinks they should look that way, well then that's their choice and I think that simple dolls have less to do with it.

Although I do have to point out that even the bratz babyz have makeup and I think maybe cellphones, that's just stupid.

Hasn't this argument been around forever? Sort of a silly thing to go on about. You can get into a lot of detail over the media and how it portrays women poorly, and how barbie is a bad role model, etc, but at the end of the day you're only proving what everyone will agree with.

    pffft.

BARBIE IS NOT A ROLE MODEL FOR LITTLE GIRLS.

Are Tonka trucks a role model for boys?

    Did Elmo affect your childhood?

Seriously; barbie never affected me, and I had heaps of them. I once had a collection of over 50. Every birthday I'd get like... five barbies...

    Do bananas affect birds?

    Yes.

Bananas can kill birds - but thats not my point =/

    2 things.
1-Excellent points. All little boys wanna be those trucks when they grow up ;D
2- Banannas. I've had the hankering to post this here for quite some time...

Those could theoretically take down a whole flock!

    ONTOPIC:::
I'm not saying it's not nice to have inhuman proportions...maybe it would be nice to have huge boobs and no waist but it's just ridiculous to try to attain it if you don't already have it. I mean just no...seriously WTF is the point?

And the bad spam spelling. "Brats not Bratz you @#$%!" I even saw a girl from a spelling bee at my school spell 'brats' like Bratz. OMG poor girl she was just 2 people away from winning. :(
Those toys are bad role models they should either take them off the market or they should make them more classy and sophisticated.

I did say something similar too. Bratz are a bad influence since they express a lifestyle no one cares for to see but yet is glamorized now, thanks to the media with real females like that such as Paris Hilton.

However, when little kids play with dolls, they aren't looking for stereotypical things and don't care about how Barbie looks as far as being anatomically correct. She's just a doll to girls. GI Joe isn't anatomically correct either, Star Wars figures, baby dolls etc. Little kids just see Barbie as the doll you can change into a million clothes and often girls play 'house' with Barbie and do things they note adults around them do. So for little kids I don't really see her as a bad role-model.

It's the teens that take it too serious if they think looking like Barbie is 'right' and don't get the point it's a kid's doll. By the time girls are teens they shouldn't be thinking about looking like a doll any way. We have these girls in the fashion industry to me that seem to affect these girls worse because they are literal size 0s and 5'10. A good wind would knock them over but supposedly some people somewhere think that's sexy so these teen girls that want to look nice get that in their heads. Also, let's look at the clothes out that are made 'sexier' for the little tooth pick girls but girls that are heavier get less attire like that. In the end, we are all being trained that toothpick wussy girls are sexy and should look a certain way while other girls who are even of a regular or athletic build are not? This is why some women get boob jobs. They are tooth picks but missing the boobs. It makes them the ideal form. So we have to thank a lot of things other than Barbie for putting into girls' minds that something is pretty and they don't meet the criteria. If teen girls would just get a clue and know that if they work out and take care of themselves, in their 20s they will be filled out where they see others and they will keep their lean figures.

Role Model? For the love of god it's a doll.XD How the hek can Barbie be a role model anyway? She doesn't do anything special or anything, in my opinion, the dang toy could be a version of Paris Hilton. I have friends who use to play barbies, and the word role model doesn't come to mind. Again, it's just a piece of plastic. Sure, she has all sorts of videos, but they don't really teach kids anything. When somebody says barbie, I automatically think: Oh that doll? What of it?

WTF, barbie just looks nice, has cars, and there are barbie boys? Oh my god.*facepalm* It is just another toy, and isn't really anything special.
