I don't have the game, but it's my friend's let's play, the same one I'm doing the blind Spyro commentary let's plays with. I figured I'd check it out, and it turns out I like it. Too bad it's not available on the PlayStation 2.

Do you like the game or do you like the show about the game?

He's being pedantic, Amaury. He's trying to say that you like the Let's Play. You don't like the game because you haven't played the game—only the let's play.

Which game is it? Path of Radiance?

You can play that on the Wii, GameCube, or emulate it. Not that hard.

What he's getting at is that you can't like a game you've not played; ergo, you like the Let's Play and not the game. Not a position I wholly agree with, but that's your free translation.

    Yeah.

    I don't agree with it, either. Just because I don't have a game doesn't mean I can't like it.

But how can you like a game that you haven't played? The core aspect of any game is the interaction between the audience (you) and the medium (the game). If that interaction doesn't happen, there's no way to judge the game as a game. I'm not saying that you can't like other aspects of it (such as the story, visuals, graphics, etc.), but don't go saying that you like a game if all you've done is watch it being played. Watch the Let's Play if you want, but understand that you're not experiencing the game, but something more akin to a TV show based on the game.

That's something I brought up on the podcast I did with @Misty, @libregkd, and @Llave. My friend and I finished our let's play of Dragon Quest VIII a while ago, and more toward the beginning of the let's play, which was back in 2011, he mentioned how the random encounters are a lot more fun if you're doing them yourself rather than watching.

However, at the same time, I disagree that that applies to everything. Take Digimon World Data Squad for the PlayStation 2, for example. I own the game, but I only got it because I happened to come across a walkthrough on YouTube. I liked the game and ended up getting it.

I'm not saying that you can't get a good idea of whether or not you will like a game just from watching it. I'm saying that if you aren't experiencing the core aspect of something, you can't say that you like it as what it is. Suppose you eat just the crust of a pizza. Even if the crust is really terrific, you still don't know if you like the actual pizza. Yes, you'd probably be right to guess that the pizza is equally terrific, but you don't know.

Experiencing the core nature of anything outside of yourself if a fundamentally futile endeavor. You acknowledged this in another thread.

If you are being pedantic, you are doing it badly.

Or is your response the same from the opposite side?

No, I worded it just fine this time. The other discussion was about the difference between objectivity and subjectivity. This is more about the difference between forming an opinion on part of something rather than the thing itself. That sentence was badly worded, but I hope you get my meaning because I can't think of a better way to put it. My point is that you can't form a valid opinion of a work of art without experiencing what makes it what it is. The core experience of a painting is looking at it, the core experience of a book is reading it, the core experience of a bowl of pudding is eating it, and the core experience of a game is playing it.

Come on, even you have to admit that it would be downright stupid for @Amaury to say, "I like this pudding," if all he's ever done is looked at and sniffed it. As the idiom says, "The proof of the pudding is in the eating."

This would only work is games were a completely interaction based experience. You can like a game's story, presentation, music, characters and innumerable other things, liking the gameplay shouldn't be the only definition of liking a game
