Gonna have to agree with Tummer on this one. My brothers dragged me to see it last night and... meh? Like, it was good, but not really my cup of tea.

On a purely technical aspect, it was AMAZING. GIANT ROBOTS KILLING SH*T. DEM SPECIAL EFFECTS.

However, the story wasn't explored nearly well enough, and the pacing was awful. I found myself not paying any attention for most of the Hong Kong fight scene, up until the pulled out the giant sword. The characters were kinda boring. I didn't give a sh*t about the dude and his brother, and I feel like they should have focused a little more on Mako and the Major. Like, you're supposed to feel bad for her, and I did. But at the same time the movie didn't give enough of a sh*t about her backround. I also wished they'd done a bit more with the other two teams, the Russian couple and the Chinese triplets. (ESPECIALLY the Russian couple.) They just kinda... introduced them and then killed them off.

The two scientist dudes were hilarious, and I'll admit I was laughing my ass off when the black market dude got eaten, but any comedy not focused around the scientist dudes seemed kinda forced.

In short, it's only really amazing if you're into special effects or giant robots. Me, I need more of a story than that to be invested in a film.

Fearless gives this film 2.5 stars out of 5.

Am I the only one who doesn't know anything about Pacific Rim? It just seemed like some big dumb action movie to me so I just ignored it, and now it's everywhere.

Though it's talking about Avengers, this pretty much reflects why I personally love the film. It doesn't try to be all gritty, super-realistic, intensely dramatic (which, with films like this, usually just ends up making the film look pretentious and silly.)

And honestly, what would you have done differently in this film? Like, what scenes would you add or change?

For me, I agree with some people that the final battle could have been a bit more...battle-heavy. The Hong Kong fight was like, the biggest action scene in the film.

Thank you, now I don't feel alone.

And I personally need to care about the characters if I want them to achieve their goal. Becket wasn't anything special. The only one I liked was Charlie Day. It seemed like he was the only one with a fleshed out character.

The reason why I love The Avengers (to use an example) so much isn't because of the fight scenes, but because I cared for the characters. They could have wrote it as a big dumb action movie, but they gave you a reason to care about why the main characters were fighting.

And I hear that there is an entire hour left out of the final cut. The hour is mostly spent with exploring more with the world and having character development. So, there was potentially more to explore but they cut that out and left us with a great example of well used CGI but an overall meh movie.

Like I said, I would have focused a little more on Mako and the Major. Hell, I probably would have liked the film better if Mako was the main character.

I would actually be very interested in the extra footage Tummer mentioned. This is by no means a bad film, but it needed a lot more work.

I'd have been ok with a bit more on Mako, as well as having seen Pentecost's sister dying, the reason why he joined the Kaiju War.

Also, I was typing up a rant about the film, but it basically boils down to this: Pacific Rim is the most fun I've had watching a film of this scale in a long time, and I'll take that, along with it's pretty stale writing and mostly typical characters, over another boring pretentious grungy drama-fest about superheroes not doing anything super for half a movie. Pacific Rim has a good emotional core, albeit mostly unexplored, but I prefer something lite like this to something dragged on and horribly managed (cough The Dark Knight Rises cough)
