Aye yall. Just did an Attack on Titan review. Let me know what you guys think. Also, what do you think I should review next?
Good review. I think I'd have given it a lower score as we discussed that one time before, but you're pretty much right on your points. Maybe try something like Kino's Journey next time.
You seem to have finally found your reviewing style, which you seem very comfortable and natural with. Having only written reviews, I can say that this it's good to find a good voice, and I give major props. I think I gave the show a similar rating, but I would argue that Eren is that OP character that a lot of shonen anime have. I'd be interested in you reviewing something that's more story driven like Bunny Drop, or maybe even a straight up romance like Say "I Love You". you should totally review Sakura Trick when it's done...
I enjoyed your analysis, although I'd disagree with the notion that Mikasa is a strong female character. While the fact that she's the best Titan killer is good, she reacts to Erin being put into dangerous situations in an over-the-top notion for the tone of the series, and in those aforementioned scenes which her personality devolves into "KEEP HIM ALIVE FUCK EVERYTHING ELSE." And the overwhelmingly powerful character....uh, it's Levi. Like, without a doubt. Spoiler He's the only one who could seemingly take on the Female Titan. Though I still do enjoy the anime, it spends some episodes dragging on for WAY too long when we already know what's going to happen next (*COUGHEPISODES9AND10*) so that I personally think that the series could have been a lot stronger by cutting out many redundant scenes, possibly cutting the 25 episodes we have to maybe....21? It's so far an 8/10, but if it doesn't pick up the pace, I could see it dropping to 7/10. STILL GOOD THOUGH.
I feel like this come across as strongly in the anime, but Eren and Mikasa are close to the most amoral and vicious of all the characters on the cast. They may seem justified in most of their actions and you can see the root of their mentality because you're following their side of the story, however they're both incredibly warped. Eren seems pretty standard protag most of the time, but then you see him rant and rave about committing genocide or mutilating people when he doesn't get his way. Yes, the titans are pretty much evil as far as humans can be concerned and him wanting to eradicate them isn't abnormal. Yes, the people he tends to threaten are enemies, but that black an white morality and snap to killing as a first solution is not normal. He also has a distinct lack of concern for the greater importance of his actions and he never shows remorse for killing or attempting to kill someone, even when he could very well be in the wrong for doing so. Mikasa is the same way. She's quieter and more subtle in her pathology more often than not, leading people to believe she's sane, but she clearly has an animal like imprint of Eren that places him at the center of her obsession. Leading her actions and attitudes to reflect his. So none of her actions are at all out of line with the series itself, it's because the animated version toned back the dark psychology and toned up the inspirational quality that it feels like we left some of the characters behind more than others. But yeah, if you've only seen the anime or saw it first I get where you were going with that.
I'll add it to my list. ;v Thanks bro! That means a lot. And well, I mean, Eren does have some vulnerabilities, like when he wasn't able to turn into a Titan later in the show. Usagi Drop is on my list, too. And I think Mikasa acting like that is within reason, because he did save her life after all and he is the only family she has left, as far as she knows. She was powerless in helping her other family members, so it's reasonable to think that she'd defend her only family member with her life. And yeah, Levi is overwhelmingly powerful, but they don't paint him as invincible nor likable, which is important. If I recall correctly, he did break his ankle while fighting the female titan (although they never mention it again in the series, which kinda sucks). And yeah, I agree, it was sorta slow in the middle.
