Does having a number really boost sales? If that was the case what happened to Brotherhood and Revelations?

I don't think they'll leave behind their flagship series, especially when these games usually compete with COD during the holiday periods. They still hold their own. I think AC is a crucial series for Ubisoft, Watchdogs is still untested and with AC, they've spent a lot of attention and money to establish it as a well known series, they won't believe the 'peak period' is over till sales plummet.

Multiplayer was the main reason sales increased. More people played multiplayer than single player for the first month(or week, I forgot). I remember reading about it back when Brotherhood first came out. So yes, numbers are a big deal. ACIII way outsold Revelations which was already the best selling AC game at that period in time.

Watch_Dogs* >>; Kind of hoping Watch_Dogs kills Assassin's Creed. I just want that story done and over with now. They need to return to Prince of Persia. Though PoP never did make as much money...relatively speaking, all the Prince of Persia games represented the pinnacle of action gaming. They were great in every area. Even the worst in the franchise(Forgotten Sands) had the best platforming. Then a Prince of Persia game was taken to the realistic extreme and became the first Assassin's Creed game. With ACII's massive success, Prince of Persia was forgotten. Well, there was Forgotten Sands but it wasn't what anyone wanted(sequel to PoP 2008 dammit). Anyways, I guess this is off topic.

All subsequent games after the previous have outsold the last. I doubt think Multiplayer was the reason people bought Brotherhood, the multiplayer was still pretty unknown then, especially for multiplayer only players, but maybe for Revelations and 3 did get sales from that. Unless you can link me to the article, and i'd be void of opinion on it.

Prince of Persia was good, but limited, it really needed to do and be more in story and gameplay (in both the original series and the 08 one). AC pushed the boundaries more and we got a series out of it. Hopefully Watch Dogs will do the same. Though honestly, I doubt it would kill the series. If AC keeps up with yearly instalments whilst Watch Dogs becomes bi yearly, well it won't beat it at all for sales for sure. And that's how these AAA series survive these days.

I think only sales make sense of it..
Because The black flag isn't just "close" of AC III, it is realy previous to it, so this will be the first numbered title that will realy happen before another title what is wierd..
That being said, there was also AC III: Liberation that happend along side with AC III, so not even the changing of character would justify the new number.

    (Spoiler about III)
*****SPOILER***** I think the only thing that justifys a new number is the ending of ACIII and the events that must follow this new character, so it isn't because of the pirate it is about "D"

    Thanks libregkd!

It's a moronic way to get sales for a game. It's already been advertised on TV, the ad campaign is obviously going to be big. That's what should be generating sales, not some Roman numerals. It's both cheap and moronic to buy a game in a series for a number (As stupid as people buying games based on the front cover having a guy with a gun, ala Bioshock: Infinite, Watch Dogs and this AC game even.)

I think i'm trying to reason that these games aren't being judged by the current consumer demand for online multiplayer gaming ability and for the single player series foundations. When obviously i'm wrong. A real shame as well to buy a product and not get the most out of it with all that it has to offer.

I really have issues with this game in general it seems no matter how much I enjoy the series!

It is only my speculation about the reason for the numbering.

I think that most people that buy Assassins Creed don't really care much for multiplayer, it just happened to be that it actually ended up being pretty good, so they kept it up.

Looking back at the AC series they have done a lot of reactionary crappy business decisions over the years. Added multiplayer when it didn't need it (though it ended up working), season passes, yearly iterations and content taken out of the game for DLC in AC2. They've done a lot of crap things with AC, but with the games ending up being pretty good, so we overlooked them. But with Revelations being a bit crap, and AC3 being a mixed bag, people are starting to notice.

Saying all this I'm still looking forward to Black Flag. Naval combat was the best thing of AC3, so expanding upon that and adding a pirate setting with a seamless open world. Colour me interested.

You say this on a Kingdom Hearts site, where many of the fans all but dismiss the non numbered titles

    I'm... Eh'ish about Assassin's Creed IV.

I loved Assassin's Creed II, I actually didn't mind I, liked Brotherhood, never played Revelations, and got only a few hours into III before throwing in the towel due to boredom. It would have to be something amazing to draw me back in.

I'm looking forward to the game. The only thing that bothers me is the plot point "You play as an Abstergo Entertainment agent, a subsidiary of Abstergo. You're researching Edwards life to make a video game."
I really hope this turns out to be a big plot twist because otherwise that's just awkward.

I hope that they go back a bit to the fighting style of AC II: revelations.
I was pretty sad that the hidden blade was so poorly used by Connor... Double killing from behind is almost impossible! From above also, we lost the poison blade as well! And all the bombs :(! The battle system at AC was always bad, but it got a bit worse at KH III, i liked all the hunting though.

I am more interested at AC III: Liberation! There were a lot of hints of freedom for the slaves at AC III, I hope that Liberation end ups being like a DJANGO UNCHAINED : THE GAME!
