I'm aware this has been debated all over the Internet; video games that can be considered "art". Be it a combination of visuals and story that is able to overwhelm the senses or through other things such as completely immersive gameplay. Games that are unique or innovative in their own right. This is a simple question with a multitude of answers.

What video games do you consider "art", and why?

I like to think Shadow of The Colossus has some kind of artistic value.

The story is enjoyable, the visuals are great, the atmosphere of the game is eerie but so well done.

There's almost no dialogue and I love that kind of thing. Where there's hardly any dialogue, but everything comes together in the end.

And the battles were incredibly epic, especially when you're immersed into the game like I was every time I played it.

    Generic answer. Oh well. :B

Games need creative mind and a multitude of visuals, sound and interface. Most of those you will recognise as art straight away. But the most important being that creativity is the key to the games plot, characters, etc and in all forms of art and music creativity is also key (unless your from Disney's music ****). Ofcourse i'd have to say games are art for multiple and obvious reasons, besides if it wasn't art i'd of killed myself the moment I found out about life drawing in concept art class.

EDIT: In short: All games are art.

I agree with Shadow of the Colossus. I mean I enjoy games that have a real story to them, something that's detailed and varied, but still SOTC was beautiful and stunning, compelling also just to see the different landscapes around the world.

I guess KH is unique and artistic also, since it's a combination of two significant pieces of entertainment, both Disney in it's wide-audience pleasing capability and FFs RPG, gamer to the core popularity. Putting the two, almost opposites, together and making it a succesful and pleasing series still running...well I call that a succesful artistic piece.

I personally consider Bioshock to be art in almost everyway. The style, story, attachments to the characters, and the tapes scattered about give you a fully immersive experience. I pray that more games become like that in the very near future.

I think Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and Fallout 3 were great pieces, they were original and did a great job of painting a post-apocalyptic picture. The visuals in Fallout 3 were great and had a great story for a Sandbox RPG.

    I'd say
    The Halo series
Some parts of the KH series (1000 Heartless battle, RE: COM Final Boss, Terra fight etc.)
    The Klonoa Games
    The World Ends with You

These are all art to me.

And regarding the concept of video games as an art form, the Writer's Guild actually has an award for Best Writing in a Video Game. So yeah.

I can't believe nobody else has said it. Visually it is beautiful, plus it has great music. The storylines themselves really pull you in and whilst the battles are quite simplistic (they are ****ing hard at times though holy ****) the game in total is a work of art.

All video games are art in their own respect. Mostly because concept art is created to plan the game anyway. And because any game has its own perspectives, meanings and values. Therefore making it a kind of art.
