This came across my mind when I was thinking about how the Organization was more in between rather than a definite good/evil.

Personally, I do not believe that the Heartless are truly evil. They are merely just trying to regain what they have lost. Think about. The Heartless are hearts that are trapped within darkness. Wouldn't there be some latent sense, some deep down need to escape?

This may explain why they collect hearts, not only because of instinct, but they may even be trying to substitute captured hearts for their own, allowing theirs to roam free once more.

This also ties into their lust for Kingdom Hearts, which the Organization said had the power to return their hearts to them. Again, the Heartless may have been seeking it to use the raw power of "The Heart of All Worlds" to force the darkness away. Now that I think about it, this also explains why they hone in on those possessing Keyblades, as that would make Kingdom Hearts stronger (or they could just use it to get their heart "freed").

Do you believe that they are indeed truly evil?

(Sorry for all the jumbled up theories. I just had to get it out of my head before I lost the idea. :3)

I don't think that they really are evil. According to Yen Sid, Heartless act on instinct, meaning that they don't do it to take over the world, but they do it cause it's what they were born to do.

    Pretty much this^

Although they are the darkness in peoples' hearts it takes a strong heartless to actually comprehend doing something "evil." Other than that, they destroy worlds and attack people mainly because they eat hearts and people have them. Thats what made them different from the nobodies, who were always able to plan things.

Interesting point, but also note that they crowd with those with power such as Organization XIII and Maleficent's evil group. Is it just because they're lost in the darkness or is it that they want freedom so badly they're willing to be used? Also, what about taking their former master's heart after they become useless, or is it just the darkness that's doing that?

The heartess are not evil sadistic creatures bent on causing harm, but rather, they are savage animals, who's very existance threatens ours.

They should be exterminated as vermin, not as evil.

I think they were willing to side with people who shared the same goals as they did...the only reason they sided with the bad guys (maleficent, the org.) was because they permitted them to do what they wanted (attack worlds, etc.) Sora and his friends were clearly more powerful, and they would have most likely sided with him if he 1) didnt have the keyblade 2) didnt want to stop them. I think they took their former masters' hearts as last resort measures...Sora and his gang pop up, kick all the heartlesses asses and protect all of the humans...the only target available is the master, so yeah, bye bye master.

I personally disagree. Yes, the Heartless do pose a threat. But does their existence need to be completely eradicated?

We don't know a lot about the Heartless. All we know is that Xehanort created them, they're hearts lost in darkness, and seek hearts solely because of instinct.

But why does that instinct cause them to go after hearts specifically?
What caused that instinct to be?

There are still many mysteries behind them, so we can't just exterminate them without knowing why they do what they do.

Well there are some natural heartless out there, like the more powerful ones and the shadows/neo shadows...and isnt the world supposed to be made up of light and dark? Maybe they are supposed to be around...?

What prevented them from attacking worlds anyway? And I wouldn't say that the protagonist's group was clearly more powerful, just that they were a bit smarter with their available power than the opposing side. If the Disney villains or Organization fought Sora in party battles, the results may have been different as the two evil groups had more members than Sora did (as well as quite powerful in their own individual right) and they could have ganged up on him instead of fighting him and a Captain of the Royal Guard and a Court Magician. Why would they side with Sora if he didn't possess the keyblade or want to stop them? Sorry to say, Sora without the keyblade has proven near-useless in the Hollow Bastion-duration of Wooden Sword use. He would've done what he could to stop the Heartless anyway, he's just too righteous. Anyone without power would just be prey, in any case.

    I thought about that too.

Maybe the Heartless are there too keep a balance between the realms, to prevent the realm of light from having too many hearts or so?

I'm really unsure about this, but I have a feeling that if the heartless just disappear, or Sora destroys them all, a "fourth enemy" similar to the Heartless, the Nobodies and the Unversed/Unbirths would appear.

It would be impossible for Sora to completely eliminate the Heartless though. Yen Sid says that as long as there is darkness in people's hearts, there will be Heartless and the worlds are made of light and darkness, so the darkness wont just vanish.

If the Heartless are supposed to balance the realms, what's making the forces of Light dominate? Surely it's not because of people being good or Sora massacring armies of Heartless?

So, if Sora eliminates all Heartless (which is rather unlikely) you believe that another dangerous force will take its place? Interesting thought, but I doubt the chances of that happening.

I see what you mean by the whole "Sora's group being smarter thing."

I kind of find it hard to explain why they would have sided with Sora though. The easy answer is that he has a really powerful heart and even when he was a heartless, he still had some form of consciousness...he didnt have the same mindless "must steal hearts" attitude.

What makes it complicated is that we dont really know how powerful a heartless Sora was, because he took the form of the weakest heartless in kh1, and yet in kh2 survived without a heart for a majority of the game(?) (Until he merged back with Roxas I mean -we still dont know if Roxas had a heart or not) and even had a different more powerful heartless form (Anti-form)...these things would lead me to believe why the heartless would have followed Sora if he was without a keyblade and didnt want to stop the heartless.

Speaking of which, do heartless evolve or do they automatically take form depending on their power?

I always thought that it was the keyblades. Yen Sid said that as long as there is darkness in peoples' hearts there will be war. Kind of supports the whole never ending struggle idea I guess.

I'm not really to sure. Maybe it's because of the Keyblades of Darkness and In-Between being out of their designated realms?

Honestly, while not likely, Sora does have a slim chance of doing so. Ever since the start of KH2, he's been more "Fight first, talk later". Besides, the same thing the happened to the Unversed may happen to the Heartless, considering the lack of even one Unversed for 10+ years.

With all the plot twists in this series, I wouldn't be too surprised to see an enemy with a power rivaling the Heartless.

EDIT: Also, why hasn't Sora ever spoken of what it was like to be a Heartless anyway? I doubt he could just easily forget about something that important. There's also the fact that he had some degree of consciousness while being one.

I guess this'll be explained in either Coded or KH3, but yeah.

Sora's got some explaining to do.

I think the old phrase there will always be a darkness when there's a light will come into play. They don't seem evil but they aren't as savage as they were in KH1 if you've noticed
