SoKai is the couple name given to Sora and Kairi.

I can see why people would dislike it, there's not a terrific amount of depth to it (the hero saves the princess), and, at points, Sora seems a bit indifferent to Kairi (TWTNW in KHII, hey kairi then blublublub riku i missed yoooooou). Besides them hugging, which is entirely normal between friends, there's no concrete suggestion that they are anything more than close friends. Even Nomura, if I remember correctly, in an early interview, said there was no "canon" couple in the series.

Some people just see far more in other relationships, involving Sora or not.

Personally I do like SoKai, it's a little "bumbling teenage just admit you like each other already gosh" but I find it pretty much adorable. I realize that there's not much more grounds to it, though, than any other common ship in the series. Personally my KH OTP is Aqua/Terra but lulz. So I don't not like it, but I can see why someone wouldn't.

I like SoKai, I know others who hate it...
But I just can't stand VenNami. Like how the heck could Ventus and Namine meet? (Even though Ventus is under sleep in the place Namine was prisoned in).
Unless if Namine mistook Ventus for Roxas...

I believe the whole "relationship" between Sora and Kairi thing is just a little silly. I understand where someone might get the idea from, but at the point where KH began it almost seemed like they were too young (assuming that memory serves me correct and that they were somewhere between 8 and 10) to quite get more emotionally complex than BFFs or a summer crush. I also feel that people who spend a portion of their childhood together are less likely to end up together in a lasting relationship due a certain degree of awkwardness, and more likely to have something along the lines of sibling love. This is more of what I feel is going on with Sora and Kairi, and even Riku to a point, although Riku is more a sibling rival for Sora until KH II.

I don't >~< There are certain instances where some people make it look kinda ok (sort of) but no, I don't really like it at all.

I like Sora/Kairi. Because I believe in the power of paopu fruits..

I suppose that they could just be very close friends, but I doubt they would drop so many 'possible' romantic moments ("I'll come back for you!" "I know you will" etcetc) just to have them end up as bffs at the end.

Well, I don't think the game is necessarily about romantic relationships. It's easy to jump to the conclusion because of the way the story is set up. The same was with Harry Potter. Everybody thought Harry and Hermione were going to date and then it was
Ron and Hermione that dated, and Harry got Ginny.
If there were to be a a relationship, it would be Sora and Kairi because it's a Disney game and lolhappyendings4ever. Then again, it's a Square Enix game, so we could just as easily see Riku and Kairi or whatever.
That's not the point though. People are going to ship even if it isn't what the story is about.
    And the story is about
    friendship.

Officially, Sora and Kairi were 14 at the time of Kingdom Hearts (though they looked quite younger), and I believe it's generally agreed if not explicitly stated that they're 15 by Kingdom Hearts II. The series has always had dark undertones, but, if the series continues to mature as the characters age, I do think there is potential for a deeper relationship between Sora and Kairi. They are still quite young at this point, though, but that may just be a personal opinion.

And then there's the part where he gets on his hands and knees and begs Saïx to release her.

I'm not fanatical about the couple itself, but it does kind of irk me that people take those moments for granted. If he's indifferent, it's only out of relief that she's all right and/or confidence that she can take care of herself. Riku's the more pressing issue at the time because he's been gone for ages, and he went through hell besides. A guy doesn't have to be slobbering all over a girl 24/7 to be considered in love, does he?

It definitely goes deeper than "hero saves princess," it just doesn't come up much. From their interactions on Destiny Islands, it's clear that she is charmed by his simplicity, and from his actions in KHII there's clearly something for her brewing in his heart. Not to mention, their hearts were unusually close for an extended period of time; that kind of thing doesn't just get handily dismissed. ...Or maybe it does, since it never comes up in KHII. It feels like there's definitely supposed to be something there, Nomura just can't decide what.

I kind of think it's a little overdone, especially witht he fact he's almost like "Oh, there you are Kairi, good to see you." and the fact Kairi didn't care very much that she was finally rescued, she was doing a pretty good job of getting out on her own.

Oh I agree, definitely! The scenes you've mentioned are powerful ones indeed, I'm just saying that I also understand the arguments of those who dislike SoKai. They are definitely competing for my top favorite KH ship. My problem is what you mentioned, Nomura seems reluctant or unwilling to take it beyond mere suggestions.

And now that I'm thinking about it, many of your second visits to worlds in Kingdom Hearts II had hints towards SoKai. If I recall correctly, in Port Royal Sora & co. were watching a rather intimate moment between Will & Elizabeth, D&G were all nudge nudge I think Sora is thinking about someone speciaaaaaaal. Then, in Halloweentown, when Jack and Sally are discussing presents and such, Sora automatically thinks of Kairi.

Ehh. They're okay. Don't interact much though.
The first KH though, wow. I could feel that connection through the tv screen. In Kh, their connection and feelings seemed so strong and true, especially considering how young they were. I remember tearing up when I saw the ending, especially when she sees the cave drawings and envisions him turning to flash her that cute smile. It still gets me emotional to this day.
I the other games though, blah. He seems to be focused more on Riku.

But KH always makes me go, wow they really are meant to be. It was absolutely beautiful, and the more recent games kinda lost that.
I guess it makes sense though, cause Riku was the lost one not Kairi. He knew she was home safe and sound. His goal was to rescue Riku.

I cannot stress enough though how powerful the original KH was. He sacrificed himself for her, and she protected him in return. (': I'm getting emotional just thinking about it hehe.

I hate the couple too but it's not like sora has anybody else to be with, except riku. Sora and Kairi are fated to each other anyway.

I don't hate it, but I can tell it's really undeveloped. In KH1, all Sora cared about was finding Kairi, but every game after that it was only about Riku. I mean, granted Kairi was at Destiny Islands for a while, it still makes me wonder why Sora didn't seem as happy to see Kairi as he was to see Riku.

You have a good point. I also don't hate the pairing and believe it to be underdeveloped.
I think that the reason Sora was so focused on saving Riku was because he knew Kairi was on the islands, safe and sound and waiting for their return. He needed to find Riku before he could return to Kairi, so I also think that was one of the points that had driven him to search so hard for Riku. That, and the fact that they're best friends.
Sora gets down on his hands and knees and literally begs Saix to take him to Kairi. That was dedication.

But when he found out Kairi was kidnapped, and reunited with her and Riku in TWTNW, his reaction to seeing her was just "hey I thought you'd wait for us. Sorry I took forever" and hugged her back. He got so emotional with Riku though! So that can be confusing. But I think it was just that he was so overwhelmed. He was looking for him everywhere, and for so long. They're best friends and have been for over ten years, and he really does care about Riku a lot

But yeah. Those were just my thoughts xP

I like Sokai but I DO feel it's underdeveloped.

But my personal pairings are Soroku (Sora X Roxas), Soriku (Sora X Riku), and Aqemas (Aqua X Xemnas).

Yeah, more of a fan for yaoi couples...

Erm, Soroku would be a bit like being in love with yourself.
Anyway, Sokai is great. I don't see any problem with it at all, besides it being a bit underdeveloped. They are probably gonna be working on that with KHIII and such.
