People who don't read comics are familiar enough with the character to have expectations going in, and people who do read comics and have been reading them for a long time would be upset to say the least if Superman was now a brooding gun-toting maniac. You're also dealing with the fact that a lot of these characters are icons and changing them too much would be detrimental to your business. When was the last time Supreme was one of the most well-known characters in the world? Never. So you can essentially do whatever you want with him without extreme public backlash. The logical solution would be to keep characters the same for the most part while changing details here and there that make them different enough to warrant the reboot, and give them new #1s so people who don't read comics can jump in. The problem is that they did not fully reboot. They chose what they wanted to be in continuity and what's not. For example, Bane still broke Batman's back, but Tim Drake was supposedly never a real Robin. It's nonsense. I get what you're saying, but it's not that simple when your characters are some of the most iconic ones in the entire industry and have been since the 40s.

I'm glad you get it, but it's still a binary here in my opinion. There's a right way to reboot- to give something old and stale some fresh ideas and new life- and a wrong way. Everything about this reboot was the wrong way. I'll take Jiku's recs over Catwoman sneaking out to fuck Batman any day.

I think just about anyone who cares at all about the character would too.

And ps, not everything about the reboot was wrong. Aquaman was changed entirely for the better, as well as some other things.

Actually I don't know enough about him pre-52 to be making that statement. oops i guess

But I will say that I don't care to read anything that's not 52 from him so that speaks to how good it is.

And if you're going to start trashing him we're gonna have some problems.

Never got into comics (would be interested in starting thoygh), but a friend had given me this one to read during high school: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1607060922

It's essentially a coming of age story for a young female protagonist and her dealing through her struggles with bullying, family trauma, and all that. It's a really nice read and pretty short, only takes 2-3 hours to get through.
