Why in some cut scenes the characters have like flat-faces, and in others, it's more of a 3-d face?

It's been bothering me for ages.

Some scenes were just decided to have more detail than others, I guess.

Like in some cut scenes their faces are like flat, and in others it has better detail.

It could be because the cutscene is really quick, therefore good detail is irrelevent..

Oh ok. Well, maybe they wanted to only like the most important scenes detailed or something...I don't know.

Yeah, I hate it when the game creators do that. THEY LOOK FUGLY LIKE THAT.

And by flat-faces, we mean they have no emotion, not much detail and pretty much the only thing that moves is their mouth. D:< Like for example:

    And

See the difference? (the second one is flat-face)

I would guess budget and time are the big factors. But yeah that does bug the hell out of me even to this day.

i always thought it was a matter of space, like trying to fit too many songs on a cd....i think that they start out all of them in detail, and then change some to flat for space reasons

I kinda think this has more to do with the way they go about doing the motion capture. You have probably seen those "making of" things for movies where they have the guy running around in suits with little senser balls that capture and translate their movements to the characters in the computer. Well, I believe most of the time, they have to do the facial movements seperately in come cases, using preset expressions recorded earlier. Perhaps, it was a matter of getting everything done in time, or simply not having enough movement come through from the stand in motion actor. That would be my guess atleast. To be honest I never really noticed it much, only that Kingdom Hearts II had much better facial expressions and movements than the first one.

Their faces are always like that in non-cutscene. But i hated how in KH2 their faces would change and become weirder when the camera wasnt really focused on the character.

Yeah, it really just matters by the scene. If real emotion is needed, there's detail. If none...flat face. Although it's funny to see Saix's face talking in hallow bastion. His mouth is moving and thats it . xD

Some scenes are less important then others. They didn't need to pay much attention to some of them.

    I noticed that too! >.<
How, like, in some scenes, the graphics will go down and all the characters will have is the little anime-mouth-flap going on! It never fails to annoy the living hell out of me XP
And yeah, when Saix does it in Hollow Bastion its hillarious. There have been instances where I've muted the TV and just yelled "MEHMEHMEHMEHMEH" The entire time he did that :P

Its just to save space on the PS2 disk.
I've seen how much information is in it, and theres almost 5 GB of files stored in just one disk! Usually theres only about 2 GB of information for a game disk. But for Kingdom Hearts, its just "WOW".

Well Kingdom Hearts 2 is a fairly big game & i'm sure the cutscenes take up loads of room so i'm not surprised that they did that.
