Any Biology geniuses nice enough to help me?

I need some help with my homework...

Here's the question:

"Identify the specialized structures in the cell membrane that are involved in communication."

Rep will be given for the right answer. ^^

 

I'm pretty sure it's receptor.

 

It's done through receptors and receptor proteins to receive chemical signals. The vesicles approach the cell surface and fuse with the cell membrane and it's contents. The transmitter is then released into the "intercellular space" where it can then be received by other cells' membranes. AKA communication.

Correct me if I'm thinking of the wrong membrane communication.

The cell membrane, being exposed to the outside environment, is an important site of cell-cell communication. As such, a large variety of protein receptors and identification proteins, such as antigens, are present on the surface of the membrane. Functions of membrane proteins can also include cell-cell contact, surface recognition, cytoskeleton contact, signalling, enzymic activity, or transporting substances across the membrane.

I'm taking Bio GT this year... and I still don't remember what that was.

 

Well since I'm incredibly smart they're making me take Bio in 8th Grade.
