Unfortunately, I've had to deal with using Norton for the past year on my computer (my mom for some reason trusts it). So, now, it just doesn't want to work for me anymore. Does anyone know where I could find a free anti-virus software?

AVG is one of the best free ones.

I've had it -- and still have it -- for several years, and it works wonders.

like Amaury said,I think too that avg is the best.Norton is too heavy for a antivirus(like process in the system) and it sucks.

AVG is a good, free one as mentioned, but generally, it is horrible.
Also, Norton is one of the better anti-viruses, people just don't always know how to use it.

Anyway, if you want legit free anti-viruses, I think AVG is the simplest one, and if you don't download things it'll work fine.
If you have a friend or someone who has Kapersky, ask for it. It is the best anti-virus of all.

Microsoft Security Essentials is quite solid; been using it on this computer for several months without incident. I had AVG on my last one, and it did the trick most of the time too, but I did still occasionally end up with an infection or two x: .

Also, a quick side note, I don't know what browser you use but it can make a difference in terms of protection. Internet Explorer is absolutely awful about this and it's easy to end up with viruses even with just casual browsing. I don't know which browser is best per se, but if you're using IE I'd recommend a switch to something else.

Off the top of my head, the following browsers are good:

    • Mozilla Firefox
    • Google Chrome
    • Opera

I've only used Mozilla Firefox, which is what I'm currently using, and Internet Explorer, but I've seen good reviews from GC and Opera users.

Opera and Firefox are the two safer ones.
I have both IE, FF and Opera installed. IE sucks. FF is my favorite, because of how it works.

Opera: The fans work a bit different. They don't open in the same way Firefox and IE does.
Also, it is shift-click in order to open a link in a new tab.
There are a couple of things like that, that you're not used to.

Which is why I recommend Firefox. It is faster than IE, it is safer and everything is better, basically.

Okay, I tried AVG but it wouldn't download properly, so I went with Avast. And, I generally do use Fire Fox now and avoid using IE if I can. Now, all I need to do is convince my mom that 1) KHV is just about as safe as facebook and 2) to not use IE anymore. Anyway, thanks for the help everyone.

Did you get any error messages when downloading AVG?

Would you post the errors you got? It'd make it easier to help you.

Avast works pretty well, I've used it for about 2 years without any problems.

I can't remember. It just said that an error had occurs that wouldn't allow it to continue on my computer.

Avast is working good though. Thanks everyone for the help.
