Anime+ with English dubs you actually prefer?

I can agree, it kinda needs practice to be able to focus on both the action on screen and the text, but I find it very worthwhile with many foreign language productions. For me, I really don't like to just throw on an anime or movie and not pay most of my attention to it. I want to be able to actually experience it, not let it be background noise/pictures, unless it's something I've already seen and made my opinion on.

Right, and I don't multitask when I'm watching something subtitled. For me, that needs full attention. I feel that if I look away for a second, I miss a lot.

I think the dub for Eden of the East gets the message across way better than the original with subs. The English dub of Spice and Wolf also feels a lot more natural. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya also gets special mention for bringing life to Kyon and Haruhi in really great a way that their original voice actors could have done, but failed at. I love Aya Hirano, but her Haruhi sounds just awful.

Are you saying that you don't believe you have the power to make a difference? That's nonsense! For example:

Can you transcribe exactly what happened in this scene with the background info? It's fine if you can't. I don't watch Kill la Kill and have only picked up bits and pieces from what's been posted on here. I can't watch a video because I'm in a hotel room with someone and he's working mornings and I'm working nights so there's never a chance to listen to videos and I don't have any headphones. I'm just really interested in what exactly you mean by this.

Same here. If I look away from the scene, I tend to miss stuff, but I can't be bothered to give the anime my full attention. It's why I prefer mangas for most because I can power through it at my own pace without worrying about rewinding and throw the flow off.

I have the opposite problem. I read really fast and whenever I watch something subtitled, I get the information I need before the character's done speaking. That and the flow of the language. I try to read the subtitles at the same pace that the character is speaking (with some fluctuation for translation so an "OVER 9000"a moment is avoided), but I tend to misjudge it horribly and either finish too early or not quick enough and it really throws off my intake and the flow of the show.

I prefer English for most things over Spanish (my native language) or Japanese (what animes are actually in for the most part) because I'm more comfortable with it and the emotion conveys better. In Japanese, things seem to be overly emotional (which I hear is intentional on their part, usually) and that's fine; it works better that way. However, other times, it...doesn't seem too click right; some lines have too much emotion (CALM DOWN, ANIME GUY. IT'S NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL). In some cases, like @Plums said, it depends on what I hear first. s-CRY-ed is my favorite anime and I prefer the Japanese over the English dub because I watch it first and I think the emotion is supposed to be that strong (except hearing Kairi's voice annoys me for that character). Other times, it depends on who the voice actor is. I love Johnny Yong Bosch and Steven Blum to death and although I can always tell it's them, the different characters they voice always feel unique. But Vic Mag-whateverthe****hislastnameis, I can only hear as FullMetal and I can't enjoy the anime in my head because the character doesn't fit Edward to me.
There are certain times, though (s-CRY-ed being one of the prime examples) where I prefer the Japanese version over the English version because one voice actor doesn't sit well with me and the voice ruins the scene even though I love everyone else (I think that's because getting so used to one person -in this case Kairi from Digimon- sounding like someone, that I can't enjoy that voice on any other face), just like with FullMetal's VA.

It'd basically give away the entire plot (not that Trigger doesn't already do that (if you ever watch it you'll get what I mean)) to fully explain the scene and even giving it context kind of ruins a certain plot event earlier on so I don't feel like posting it here and now. so you're saying the white-haired girl's voice isn't one of the most unbearably annoying voices you've ever heard?

for the record, the white-haired girl embodies so many of the things that i dislike about anime, her voice being one of them.

 

I prefer to watch things in sub if I don't own it, then I prfer the dub version, only if its decent however.

anime's that I prefer dub however is simple and clean.

Dragon Ball Z - for obvious reasons
Yu Yu Hakusho - I just think they did a fantastic job with the voice acting and the voices actually match unlike their sub counter parts.

ANGEL BEATS! - I CANT STAND THE SUB FOR THIS. I HATE HATE HATE IT.

 

Nothing I can think of really except for Pokémon. Watching that with Japanese VAs feels super weird because I am so used to watching it in English.
I also equally enjoy the dub and sub for Death Note.

I watch subbed anime 99% of the time for a number of reasons.

1. English VAs in anime are generally worse than their Japanese counterparts.
2. Listening to English VAs talk about themselves like they are Japanese feels weird.
3. Sometimes, dubbed anime is westernised, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I personally would rather watch the show the way it was intended.
As mentioned before in the thread though, some anime have western themes already so this doesn't really apply to those.
4. Only 'popular' anime gets dubbed. The majority of new shows every season don't get dubbed so even if I wanted to watch them dubbed, I couldn't.
5. Subs are generally easier to get, and come out first. New episodes are available online, subbed, usually the same day of the Japanese airing.

I'm not saying that all dubs are bad or that watching dubs is wrong, but I personally find dubs inferior to subs in most cases.

 

I'm saying sometimes a high-pitched or hyper-feminine or whatever voice isn't as annoying as a boring, uninteresting voice that I could hear in my everyday life that wouldn't fit the tone of something.

Thing is...I didn't find that girl's voice annoying.

 

For me, I'm sort of the same way. Objectively, I don't find the voice all that annoying. But it's what kind of character that comes with the voice, and for that voice, it's some moe-blob that the producers want to sell on the hard core otaku (I mean this in the Japanese sense) by selling her body on figma, body pillows, etc. There are few of these moe blob characters that are tolerable and help out the story, and even then, they can't escape the trap of being seen as such. And it's such a Japanese thing, that you can't really find good voice actresses to play these characters. Monica Rial and Stephine Sheh are the two that come closest in playing them well, but they are casted as them so much, it just adds to the trope.

 

I am not a big anime person, I think watching the sub is good to get the feel of it and watch it the way it was intended but I just prefer the dub because I find it easier to watch and even if english VAs are bad at times I dont' really care, I'd rather watch that then spend my time staring at subtitles. I watched Ginga densetsu Weed as sub and had quite a few troubles with it because there were scenes in particular (in a snow storm) where it was hard to read so I had to constantly stop the episode to try and read it. It wasn't bad, I thoroughly enjoyed the anime but it felt like it would have been improved in my eyes as a dub.

 

I found the guy's voice a lot more annoying tbh

 

Ironically, I was watching Godzilla: Final Wars last night, and I had an issue with reading the subtitles at times, because the black stroke around the words wasn't thick enough to counter-act the white-on-white in some scenes. It can be a real problem. Still, I guess it's a personal thing: I'm perfectly ok with putting in a little effort (honestly a negligible amount to me now) to enjoy a usually better rendition of a production.

Honestly, yeah, he was really whiny sounding...but it might just be the character?
