Use this place to discuss weird or ridiculous edits that were made to dubbed anime. The only ones that come to mind right now for me are those made to Digimon Data Squad. Notable ones include: - Lalamon's digivolution to Rosemon being edited to remove her buttocks and breasts being focused on. It's basically like they're shaming women and telling them not to be happy with their bodies. Even the Spanish dub didn't edit that. Original - 6:17 - 6:44: Dubbed: 6:11 - 6:35: - Rosemon's transformation to burst mode, though they did forget to edit it in one episode. I can kind of see this one, but still. Original - 8:21 - 8:40: Dubbed: 8:37 - 8:52: - Any shots of RizeGreymon's revolver being pointed right toward the screen were removed. Additionally, the sound when fired was changed from a gun to a comical toy sound. For other dubbing edits, start with the first episode here, click show on Contents, and go to Dubbing changes. Then just go through each episode by clicking show under More episodes on the sidebar. Really, it's only the Lalamon ones that get to me. Other than that, I enjoy the show.
Part of it is that in Japan the show is aimed toward teenagers whereas in the US it's aimed at ages 11 and below, but still. People act like sexualizing something is the "OMG worst thing ever because sex is gross1111" Kids are going to see that stuff eventually; it's useless trying to keep them from it However, for this specifically, I fail to see the sexualiation, so my previous statement still applies.
I disagree... I think it's fair for parents to want to introduce it to their kids when they think they're old enough to understand not just what sex/sexualization is but what it means and how important it is to be safe, aware and respectful about it. Children's television is supposed to be a controlled/safe environment for kids & as such has standards which include an obligation to try to allow parents to do that on their own time, even if in many cases kids do learn about it before their parents would probably like. It's not really about the eventuality of it imo, and keep in mind different cultures have different ideas of when the 'right time' is. Not necessarily saying I agree with all changes/edits done to dub broadcasts mind, like sometimes they are genuinely ridiculous. Just referring to sexuality in children's programming here. anyway the Gundam Seed ray guns are forever my fave example of dub edits because they didn't even try
I guess I can understand it better when put that way. I even said myself I could see how Rosemon's burst mode transformation could be seen as such, but Lalamon's digivolution to Rosemon not so much. I don't view it as sexualization, but rather just part of the digivolution and showing what changes are happening like with the others. I guess what gets me is they'll show close-ups of changes happening in the male breast area or the male waist/groin area, such as a belt being put on--albeit, the groin isn't the focus, but still--but not the females'. Like, I understand the why as it's always been that way, but I personally feel it's unfair that males can walk around topless while females can't, and that's why I feel this way about the edits regarding Lalamon's double-warp digivolution. On the subject other, non-sexual, but ridiculous, edits, however, the very first episode of Digimon Data Squad had Agumon punch Marcus in the groin, and in the dub instead of showing Agumon's paw making contact, it shows a comical star whatchamacallit. I thought they were rice balls in both versions.
Dude, I had Cutey Honey on TV when I was a kid. Let' s just say the fighting often involved boobs attacks. Most Japanese to French dubs were actually bought to Berlusconi' s chanels in their Italian versions. Cuts included. But what usually got cut was the bloody violence, not sex or nudity. In order to "sugarcoat" those that still remained potentially disturbing they chose to make their villains sound retarded. Quite literally. The most famous perpetrators of this are City Hunter and Hokuto No Ken. Not sure whether they translated them from Japanese or Italian, but several episodes of Dragon Ball look like the voice actors just threw the script to the bin altogether and improvised a dialogue from the pictures alone.
My personal favorites when you google 4kids censorships Spoiler Reality must have hit these kids pretty hard This still bugs the living crap out of me for some reason. And even more so because they don't even call them donuts but rice balls in the later episode when Todd comes in (i'm rewatching all of it, so I have it fresh in my head).

obviously i see the hilarity in these now but as a dumbass kid i never picked up on this as something odd. like shit maybe donuts come in vaguely triangular shapes. maybe they're covered in coconut. and yugioh like... enough weird shit happens in that show why would it be weird that keith is just pointing at pegasus
Yugioh censorships are amazingly funny. Some I can see, like the harpy cards (though I don't like changing originals myself) but others are just dumb, like Dark Magician Girl. And there's the summon symbol used as well Oh, let's not forget this.....I don't even know
transformers armada had this thing where they could never get names right for certain characters. so as a kid when i had most of the toys, i was quite confused and aggravated by the show for lying to me constantly.
Reminds me of the first Bay movie calling the tank guy "Devastator" (actual name is Brawl) like what the shit that's not a Combiner.
have you seen armada? because that aint nuthin compared to the mess that was armada i mean like every episode the minicons had different names. and most of the time they were either called leader-1, jolt, and specifically grindor. it was a mess. but what a great show. i can easily understand why people vehemently hate it, but as a kid it was like the hottest ****. when they go to unicron in the end. o ma god
yeah he's one of the more prominent characters but thats good because he's the only interesting one hes easily the best part of the show
