It's apparently some thing you do where you want to show that you're responding to what was said, but without quoting it all. I think it's kinda dumb, but I've seen several people do it. I just don't see why they don't just tag the person considering we have that nifty new feature that makes it so quoting isn't always necessary to get their attention.

I had nothing meaningful to post and wanted a chance at winning the prize. The majority of my posts in this thread were random strings of text and links on the page, but I decided to do something different in that post. There is no real reason for it.
