The introduction section doesn't really fit well in "Rules and News". It looks out of place, wastes unnecessary space, and it's probably annoying for mods to lock threads all the time. Why not just put one sticky introduction thread where all newbies can post in the general discussion area?

To be honest it's better where we used to have it, which was at the very bottom of the forum.
The reason it's not a stickied thread is so new members can meet new people and feel welcome, if there was a stickied intro thread new posts could get lost, and it doesn't seem as individualized as it would be in a thread.
Plus as a section it is a very obvious thing, hard to miss even if you're just starting out. Keep in mind that for some members, this is their first forum, and it can be a very new thing to get used to.

That's true, I do think it's important for new members to feel welcome, but it works just fine on every other forum I'm on. This is the only forum I've ever been on that actually has its own section for intros.

To be honest I agree with DP. Although I may just be used to seeing it on the bottom, but I definetely think ahaving a section for individual threads gives a greater feeling of community.

All the forums I go on have an introduction section for new members and it does work quite well as you can meet some people who are either into the similar side of things as yourself or if your new, just meet some people to help you out for a while. A single thread wouldn't work as well since, as Wolfie said, it won't feel as personal and would ultimately die when new members feel a little rushed into the sites other sections, if they wish to choose to introduce themselves.

It does actually fit in with the News section. New members and departures(permanent ones) of members who've been here for a long time should be considered news. This isn't some overly huge forum where everybody gets lost, it's a bit like a community. We're supposed to welcome new members with open arms(and hopefully they'll be friendly and active).

I personally don't have much to add that hasn't been said already. New members probably wouldn't find an Introduction Thread and they might not get greeted at all if they just post there so they would get forgotten and feel unwelcomed.

Yeah, as with what Fayt said, every other forum I've been on has had an intro section.
It's been that way here for quite a few years and won't be changing, sorry.
