    no it doesn't.

Your reason for my saying that I think something is unnecessary is not the reason that I say something is unnecessary, completely invalidating your post.

My post isn't invalidated, I'm pointing out why it's popular.

Actually, the point of my second post was to explain why I'm okay with Gangnam Style being the only popular thing right now. And as I said before, move to Canada if you don't like capitalism. It's not much different, but at least they say they're different.

My problem here is that you care about what the American public enjoys and chooses to patronize... honestly, it doesn't mean a lot to me. I find Gangam Style pretty dumb, it got a smile at best out of me when I first saw it but it's just a passing fad. We do the same thing with our own artists, it's not at all unique to this case or Asian music. Artist releases an album or two, scores it big with a single, everyone is suddenly nuts about them. Teenage girls buy a number of tee shirts from Hot Topic to advertise their love. A few people get genuinely into it and explore the artist's former discography, keep up with them, explore similar artists. The majority move on to the next Gaga single or what have you. So it goes.

The general public has pretty short attention spans when it comes to music. My solution? Stop watching MTV (& whatever other music channels are out there anymore, if they can even be called 'music channels'), stop listening to the radio. Go off the bands you find through your own pursuit and interests, recommendations from friends. It's okay to like popular things and get into a fad song like Gangam Style, but think for yourself. And don't worry about what everyone else is doing. That's their business. Dissing them for the Gangam Style thing is like dissing yourself for liking that one Demi Lovato song, rocking out to Somebody I Used to Know despite it being one of the most outplayed songs this past summer, and knowing the dance moves to Single Ladies. Music is music is music. People like what they like.

I agree completely with what you're saying, but that song is like, just plain terrible, be it obscure or popular. But opinions and shizz. Even Kimbra couldn't save it.

But yeah, give it a month or so, the song'll be gone from most people's memories, and if they ever hear it again, they'll think "Oh hey this song is quirky and cool!" and then go on never paying it attention again.

I don't watch music channels, and I certainly don't listen to the radio.
This stuff is unavoidable, at least while I'm in high school, which means that I'm going to have an opinion on the matter, because it's impossible to completely ignore what everyone is talking about, and of course because it's me I'm not going to have a very high opinion of it.
The only thing that provoked me into making this thread was that my sister was talking about the songs on that cd and Gangnam Style was one of them. It was a passing thought that lead to a thread, and not something that causes me to lay awake at night cursing the close minded society that we live in.

Actually music is one of the biggest memory trigger, along with smell. Even if you hated that song with a passion, if it was hammered into you chances are hearing it again years later will bring back memories, possibly nostalgia.

Unless you're afraid of looking weird, you can wear soundproof earmuffs in school for everything except your classes. Pop 'em on in the hall and during lunch and you won't have to worry about a thing.

I'm great at the hating and judging part, but I'm terrible at ignoring things. Can't wait till I'm done there, 6 or 7 months left I think.

You're going to hate and judge your whole life and leaving high school will not change a thing.

Agreed. All those morons and phonies are going to stick around your whole life. The only things that'll change are their faces and names.

Eh, I'm sure you'd be right if I had any feelings associated at all with songs like "Ice Ice Baby" or "Soulja Boi"

I'm saying it's not getting easier. It'll never get easier. Not for you.
