The Airbus went missing over the Atlantic Ocean on a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, France. The plane departed from Rio de Janeiro-Galeao International Airport at 19:03 LT bound for Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. The last radio contact with the flight was at 01:33 UTC. The aircraft disappeared about 186 miles northeast of Natal, Brazil. The aircraft left CINDACTA III radar coverage at 01:48 UTC, flying normally at FL350. The aircraft reportedly went through a thunderstorm with strong turbulence at 02:00 UTC. At 02:14 UTC an automated message was received indicating a failure of the electrical system. The plane carried 12 crew members and 216 passengers. Debris was found about 400 miles northeast of the Fernando de Horonha islands. This ties as the 21st worst accident in aviation history.

Sad, I feel pity for the passengers' families. I would not want to have been on that plane.

Have they found where the plane crashed yet?

That's quite tragic. I too pity their families.

They've found some debris of the plane, and two bodies, iirc.

The whole thing with the crash is terrible, especially since they haven't found most of the deceased, the families can't have closure on this for quite a while...

Even though you are far far more likely to die in a car than on a plane? Also, the number of bodies is now either 4 or 6. They have also spotted many more.

Statistically speaking, flying is the absolute safest way to travel.

Last I checked, they found more than two bodies (can't remember how many exactly), some luggage, and a leather briefcase with a plane ticket for the doomed flight.

What's unnerves them now is they are still no closer to finding the black boxes than they were before the discovery of the bodies. The black boxes will them exactly what happened to make the plane go down.

Also the black boxes only retain information for about 30 days after a crash. It's a race against time to find them.

May the passengers/crew rest in peace. ♥ :'(

I thought it was that you're more likely to get in a car accident then in a plane crash?

Either way, if you get into a car accident it's WAY more likely that you'll actually survive. If your plane goes down and explodes or something like that...You're dead. O-o

I feel awful for the families and the victims... >< I hope they'll find closure and that the passengers and crew all Rest in Peace...

But it's not how bad the crashes are, it's how often they happen. Countless car accidents happen every day, whereas with plane crashes there's usually only one or two deadly ones a year in the world.

If your plane goes down relatively horizontally (crash-landing), the odds of survival are good. If it nosedives... well, then yea, you're pretty much dead. Most plane accidents I've heard of, though, tend to end in crash landings, though, or early landing because of (for example) engine fires, or air loss (rarely serious). Airplanes are safety tested more severely than any craft besides spacecraft. The pilots are psychologically tested, and most have a personality that discourages panic, and trained almost like military. The ground crews (I think) go over every plane after every flight.

True, but plane crashes are usually taken a lot more seriously than car crashes, even if everybody survived.

I thought the boxes stopped sending the signals after 30 days. Either way, after a month, game over.

Well, without an external power source, the batteries have to die sometime...

    Something like that. :sweatdrop:

That doesn't matter, the point is that everyone is more likely to get in so many car crashes than in one plane crash.
