Historically, Satan was set up by God as the opposition. God placed him there so that people would be forced to choose between two sides, both of which said god created. Satan did not try to get people to believe that he did not exist. Rather, he was there to make people question their faith. His goal was to make them believe that God did not exist rather than himself. If you cut out Satan but leave God, then where is the opposing side? It does not make sense for him to erase himself.
