I have to agree with Noroz, at that rate we might as well remove dereps altogether. Dereps don't count as much as your usual rep power, if memory serves, so it's not like you're taking major hits, but I don't want people gang de-repping others to prevent them from getting Premium.

I'm sure some people would enjoy that. But maybe we should see what others think, just in case? I mean, I'm sure people would like no Dereps, but there's probably some people that might think it should stay

Only problem being, sometimes it's a mild reward, and a huge punishment

I agree. There are more effective ways of getting a point across anyway.

Why should someone who has been rewarded repeatedly be nullified by someone else?

that's just the problem with someone having a gigantic rep power compared to someone else. If someone had a rep power of 5, and someone else had something like 15 or 17 or whatever, you could get rewarded, but if that person with the higher rep power dereps you, you get that "huge punishment". It's not that you have a high rep. It's that whole "1 step forward and 2 steps back." You get a little more, only to be pushed back even farther

I like 500 rep. That seems reasonable.

And I am just throwing this out there but isn't rep whoring better than post whoring?

Being de-repped is not anyone's fault but your own. I've been de-repped twice, and even though I thought it was dumb, that's how the rep system works.

Just as Misty said, dereps aren't that 'huge' of a punishment as, even for people with a very high reputation, they're not worth as many rep points as a +rep.

I am for implementing the rep requirement again. I think 500 is a fair amount if 1000 is really too high. If 'gang dereps' occur, they can be easily found and removed.

I guess we're just going to call them a slap on the wrist than? Still, 500 seems a bit high. Why don't we start with something like 300, and if that's too easy, why not put it up? I know you said that was already done, but this time you're not raising it 100 points at a time
I'm not really all for this, but I seem to be out-voted in this, so I'm compromising

Oh, I used the word "personal" because it is the other's decision if he wants to rep you or de-rep you, if he "likes" or he "dislikes".

Hum, I think that the max... 350 rep points is my opinion.

While, in the example you gave of someone just starting out getting a derep, it's a big hit, it's not generally like that--that's an extreme case. Furthermore, I find that positive rep is much easier to come by than negative. I've been negative repped a few times in the past, but it doesn't even come close to the number of positive rep I have.
Major point being, you can't have the good without the bad.

I know it was mostly sarcasm but I actually don't find the derep removal (if possible) to be that bad of an idea. Here on KHV most members just choose not to anyway and when dereps are given there is a good chance of unnecessary drama.

There's the problem there, though, of how to justify a derep. The problem we ran into in the past was that people would just come to us about every derep they got, because they felt it unwarranted. It's pretty rare that you'll agree with a derep you receive--it is, after all, a derep. Many people would look at it objectively and accept it, but it's just really fuzzy territory.

Throwing my humble opinion out there like the lot of you.

I agree with the overall statement of 500 reputation points herein as a minimum requirement for members, as an addition to reaching the usergroup, Premium, to be put into practice. It will weed out some members, but most members I know that do reach premium already have a respectable amount of reputation points.

Think of the addition as a speed bump. Tells the member to slow down and be a little more insightful or considerate to others, and they may receive a reward of rep.

In terms of ganging up on one member deliberately, the member can easily contact an Administrator (via PM most likely), and they can see the rep given to the member and find the convicts very easily.

De-rep is not equal to your reputation level. I think it's about half. So let's say I have a reputation level of 20. If I give positive rep, that person will receive 20 reputation points. If I de-rep, a person will lose 10 reputation points. Something along those lines, not sure if you have an odd number for your rep level.

Pretty much this. Getting rid of the de-rep function would not be wise. It can teach a member not to be so immature, rude, et cetera. I personally think it's a necessity in some instances. It shouldn't be as much as your rep level, half seems reasonable. Just don't get de-repped by a staff member lol.

I wouldn't mind having a rep requirement of around 500, that seems like a decent number to me. I eman, there are a lot members with rep powers well into the 20s and above, so it shouldn't be too difficult in the process of accruing 1000 posts to get 500 rep. I myself had the rep requirement for premium within my first year and half here iirc, whereas it took me 4 to get the posts and by that time the rep requirement was gone.

On the subject of de-repping, to be honest if the idea of it being removed altogether is being thrown around, I'm not against that idea. Thank about it this way - all the mig social networking sites have very positive systems of knowing how well somehting is recieved, i.e. Facebook has a like button but no unlike, tumblr has a like function but it has no hate button (although some would argue that's the askbox). It's all about positive reinforcement, that is rewarding positive behavior. In situations like thism negative behavior is moderated in a few ways: by reporting it to a higher power, telling them yourself (although that kinda enters backseat modding territory) or doing nothing. I suppose that getting rid of the de-rep system would remove the "Backseat modding and behavior shaping through negative rep" thing which I know for a fact has been going on recently. I suppose also, it's kind of a nasty thing to do? I want to build a very positive based community, and it just seems like a very mean spirited thing to have when people de-rep? I mean don't get me wrong, there are times where it can be warrented, and even though I don't de-rep often I have done recently, but I think talking to somone about what they have done is more important than demeening them by lowering their rep or whathaveyou. Also, de-rep gives scope for things like in the discussion section being derepped because somone dislikes your opinion on a particular subject, which is most definately not what it should be for, because if you spend a lot of time making an arguement piecing together evidence and crafting your viewpoints, just to have yourelf be derepped for it, you're not exactly gonna go running back to post there again in a hurry are you? And yes if you couldn't tell that HAS happened to me before. I don't know, that's just my view on it.

I don't like the idea of this at all. I already try my hardest to make my posts as valid and..best? as possible, yet i rarely get rep. I think it's mostly due to the fact that not only do i mainly post in the RP section, but not enough people find me entertaining.

While it would make people put more effort into their posts, it would also ensure that some people never reach prem purely because they are somewhat disliked on this site.

Well I made premium off of only posting in the code vault, back in '09 there weren't many people in the code vault with more than one rep bar. Every time I would even go into the spam zone, things blew up in my face and before I knew it all of my rep was gone. Moral of the story here is, it is more than possible to do this if you only post in one section. Nobody ever said this was going to be a fast process that would be easy for everyone, because to me if that was the case there would be no point in premium.

I wouldn't mind it if it wasn't such a high amount of rep.

Took me years to get prem, when post whoring was about, and i had to get 1000 rep and 1000 posts it was damn hard to get anywhere that close when I contained myself to two sections at best. I didn't have the inclination to go to the spam zone at all, and as such I was penalised in a way from a fast track to rep and prem as a result.

I have made a considerable number of posts in Discussion in my first 4 years, none I would consider spam, and have such feel like I actually earned the right to be prem. The fact you can get prem inside a few months by posting like a whore is like a slap in the face for people like me.

But enough ranting, I want Prem to be more obtainable then it was for me when I was trying, but still feel like you're a dedicated member to the site, who cares about this place and that you achieved something.
So maybe 500 is alright, as long as it's fair for all.

From what I know of the Code Vault, a considerable amount of post whoring and rep whoring has gone on in there for a long time.
All I'm saying is that loads of people who only post in the Code Vault get tons of posts in a short amount of time, for reasons I don't actually know, but you cant generalise that it would be easy to get tons of posts and rep if we're only talking about one section. Other sections don't have the same amount of activity, for example the lul period between KH games means that people who only post there will not get tons of posts for a long time.

The forum is disproportional in the that if you work towards the right sections, you can get many reps and posts.

Derepping can have a positive influence, though it'd be labelled as behaviour shaping. I don't see anything wrong with that to an extent. There is some behaviour that isn't, or shouldn't, be tolerated and I think members have a right to express their disapproval through a derep. It's better than calling them out in a thread and arguing (though that still happens lol)

I understand your point about positive reinforcement but it can also have a negative effect as well. I have seen folk get rep for being mean and whatnot. I could type in a post, 'Sabby's an evil tyrant succubus...who sucks at staff and smells like cabbage' babeh I love you very much and I bet you smell like chocolate muffins <3, or some sort of personal attack on Sabby or other member and someone could rep me for that cause they thought it was funny. They're basically rewarding me for being mean and it'd encourage me to post more posts like it in hopes of getting more rep. khv isn't as mean spirited now as it has been in the past, but I'm confident it still happens. It's in our nature, we want to be rewarded.

No matter what way you look at it rep can and does shape members, be it positively or negatively. I think if we can give rep then we should have the option to derep. At least this way is there some sort of balance. I mean, derepping isn't what it used to be. I've received random derep in the past cause the 'donator' was anonymous and they did it for kicks and giggles. I can't see that happening now since the user's name is displayed, and it'd be obvious if there was gang derepping or spam derepping going on. The staff can fix that no problem. And whether or not you think a derep is justified it's not your choice. The same with reps. It's up to the member giving to decide whether or not it's worthy of a rep or derep. I haven't derepped someone for a while (I imagine this would be the face of whoever I would derep now) but I still want the option just in case there is something I really think is unacceptable.

Anyway, back to the main topic lol. I'm no bothered if you guys decided to implement a minimum rep requirement. I guess it gives members a goal but most folk have a decent amount of rep by the time they reach 1000 posts anyway. 500 would sound acceptable.

Just to put my opinion out there, I think a rep limit for becoming premium has been long overdue.

As mentioned before, most people who make it (unless they majorly postwhore) already have around 500 rep points. Plus, a good number of people hang around in the spamzone, where rep is abundant. I am totally in favor of this.
