Don't worry, this won't be another "waaaah make the file size bigger for normal members" thread.

What I'm humbly asking is, if the site could support transparency in avatars. I tried to upload an avatar with round edges, but apparently it changed the file extension from .png to .jpg; showing transparent parts as a white color.

This is really a minor thing, but my addiction to differently cut avatars forced me to bring it up. Is there a possibility to do this? I do have a feeling that allowing other file extensions will result in people uploading animated avatars as well - not sure if you approve of those, what with all the lag they might cause.

But eh, I'll just give this a try. Pretty please with sugar on top? ♥

edit// Apparently the avatars and profile pictures get a .php extension once uploaded, not .jpg. My bad.

I'm curious as well. I make all of my own avatars, so it's not that hard for me to change the color of the background layer to that of the thread so that my avatar looks like the edges are transparent, but it'd be nice for people who can't (or don't want) to do that and for people using someone elses avatar~
So if it's possible, I agree that it would be convenient.

Not really sure what is being suggested here... the file types don't change, if you upload a .png file if you right-click the avatar it is still a .png so nothing is converted automatically. Maybe provide an example of something that is getting changed when you upload it?

I have no idea what Crimson is talking about with .php and .png, but what is being changed is the transparency of an image, like the corners of my current avatar. I had to edit it myself with the colors of the forum to make it appear transparent.

Is there anyway to have the forum keep the transparency?

Normally, if you upload an image with rounded corners like mine (without changing the background to the color of the forum, and just leaving it as .png) or in the shape of a circle or something, the edges are white instead of transparent.

Ah ok I see what you're saying. Well I don't see any settings regarding this, I will ask the vB community about it and see if they know how to get them to display properly.

My avatar's transparency and movement works fine, at least from here. I didn't have to edit it at all.

I think the trick is to host it from another site, i.e. tinypic, instead of uploading it directly here? Because I know it turns out looking completely different when I upload it myself, one minute and I will take screenshots.

EDIT: Or not, it still seems to work >> Does my avatar look wierd to everyone else and I just haven't noticed all this time? Lol.

It seems as though vB can handle transparency (whether the image is uploaded or linked directly) as long as it is a GIF, not a PNG--that's why Stardust's avatar looks fine. Unfortunately, GIFs are rather awful with transparency sometimes, so yeah. If RvR gets any answers then awesome, but for anyone looking for an immediate and definite thing... yeah, lol.

Are you guys using ImageMagick or GD? I have never had this problem, and it should not.

GD. Perhaps we should figure out if Imagemagick is installed on our server... which I doubt, somehow. |:

How come Christmas guy's avatar now has rounded edges, but only in one skin?

    (assuming you're talking about LilBueno)
The rounded corners aren't actual transparent rounded corners, they're rounded corners set on a background color that matches where his avatar is displayed on the 4.0 skin (a dark gray / black), giving the illusion that it's transparent. On Nobodies Reprieve though, that area is white, so it's not really the same.

Edit: Got it working! I just switched the image settings from GD to ImageMagick. I tested a PNG and it seemed to work fine, let me know if there are any problems.
