A King's Story 4: Fading Light

"Hanyuu has a habit of disappearing suddenly." Rika smiled.

 

"is she just invisible or has she gone somewhere else?"

she went back where dark was.

 

"Invisible." Rika smiled. "Only I can see her now. She helps me a lot during the festival."

Dark was rifling through books. Tons were piled up on his desk.

 

"so you cheat"

"wine?"

 

"N-No! I don't cheat..." Rika shifted about. "If I'm hurt before the festival, she cures it during the dance."

"Age?" Dark asked.

Rika nodded. "Our senses are connected too."

Dark held his hand out to her, through the piles of books.

 

"so she's there all the time?"


She passed him the bottle and glass.

 

Rika nodded, heading out. "Always with me."

Dark poured himself some before drinking it. "Another thing I love about being a Shinigami. More tastebuds equals better tasting wine. And how kind of this Kingdom to know me already." He grinned, reading through one book.

 

"doesn't she take holidays?"

"you're In the text books?"

 

"She takes holidays when I do." Rika smiled. "She wanders off at times but always comes when I need her."

Dark nodded, holding the book open to her. On one page, there was a old picture of a farm boy, only 10 years old. He was smiling at the camera, holding a chicken. It was Dark. "Me. When I was 10 years old."

 

Matsu stayed quiet.


"how did a sickeningly adorable boy become a malicious shinigami?"

 

"Are you okay?" Rika asked.

"That stupid grin in the picture didnt last long. Apparently, my family were cursed. My parents died on the same night and everyone started to hate me. Out of self defense from an attack by older kids, I killed one by accident. After that, I was charged for murder and killed. For some reason, I woke up."

 

He nodded.

Rika smiled at him. "Hanyuu is standing next to you."

Dark nodded. "Yup."

 

"I thought she was shy"

"they have nice food here" she said just to keep the conversation going.

 

"She is. But she gets braver if no one can see her." Rika smiled.

"Really? Lucky you then." Dark started reading the rest. "I remember that..." He grinned.

 

"aren't you gonna be late for practice?"

"does death feel different to different people?"

 

Rika blinked. "Oh no! I completely forgot!" She ran off. "Look after Matsu, Hanyuu!"
"Haauuauauu..." Hanyuu appeared again. Instead of any wolven features, she had horns instead and wore a white and red shrine outfit.

"Depends on how you die, what age and your fear. Dying by a Shinigami can be painless or painful. To me, being hung at 12 wasnt so bad. I wasnt scared of death and I laughed in the face of it." Dark told her.

 

Matsuda stared at her.
