    Chapter 14

    “Aww C’mon, Clara. It’s not that bad.â€

    “Yes it is!!!†the girl cried. “My face…my face… it’s… UGLY!â€

Kairi put a comforting arm around the other girl’s shoulders. Clara shook with tears. She was bawling so loudly now Kairi was surprised Sora hadn’t come running in to see if anybody was being killed.

“No really,†Kairi soothed, “once the swelling and bruising goes down, it’ll be back to normal!â€

Clara sniffed. “You really think so?†a small glimmer of hope appeared on her face.

“Positive.†Kairi smiled. For a while she hoped Clara would stop crying but when the purple haired girl looked in the mirror again fresh tears trickled down her cheeks.

“Oh….†Kairi hugged the girl hard and wished Selphie was here. Selphie would’ve known what to say.

“It’s just…. I’m nothing without my good looks! Just.. An ugly shell!â€

“No you’re not!†Kairi said exasperatedly. “You’re a really kind girl who will still be loved no matter what she looks like!â€

Clara cried even more and ran into the toilet and locked herself in. Kairi banged on the door to make her come out but she refused. After a while she gave up and sat on the bed.

“Sora?†she called. “You can come in if you like!â€

She sighed and sorted out her hair. Over the last few stressful days it had gotten into a state of negligence and was now a red matted mess.

“Sora?†Kairi said warily when he didn’t walk in. She got up and checked the corridor outside. It was empty. He must have gone downstairs, or gone to check on Riku.

Kairi was about to turn around to go back inside the room when she froze. Something told her everything was not alright. The house was silent. Eerily silent. Hardly daring to breathe, Kairi crept back into the corridor. That’s when she heard the loudest bang she had ever heard in her life.

She jumped out of her skin and banged her arm on the doorframe. Clara shot out of the bathroom, her eyes no longer red and a fiercely terrified expression on her face.

“What was that!?†she squealed. Kairi held up her arm for quiet.

“It sounded like it came from the other side of the house.â€

“Not where Riku is?†Clara’s eyes widened with fear.

    Kairi nodded grimly.

    “Take a weapon.â€

Clara picked up a huge ornamental candle stick made of iron. She pulled out the candle but then changed her mind and put it back in. Lighting it with a match, she waved it through the air. Kairi ducked to avoid a burning inferno near her face.

“Careful with that!†she said. Clara stopped moving around wildly.

Kairi looked around for a weapon and saw an axe stapled to the wall. With uncanny strength she ripped it off the restraints and did a practice swing. It was heavy but she could manage.

“You have a lot of weapons in your house.†Kairi said quietly.

“My dad’s paranoid.†she hissed and the two girls proceeded to the corridor. Another loud bang came from Riku’s room and Kairi gripped the axe tightly. She wasn’t sure, but she could have sworn she had heard screaming.

“Any luck?†Shell called across the cave. Six faces turned to her and shook their heads. For hours they had been tirelessly looking for one book; one book to save Riku from insanity.

“Wait….†Selphie said. Everyone stopped and turned. Selphie had picked up a book. Wakka gasped and leaned over to look.

Shell caught her breath, but she let it out annoyed when she saw that Selphie had just picked up a copy of Cooking: Making The Best Of Leftovers.

“Sorry!†Selphie squeaked when everyone groaned. Wakka put an arm around her.

“Why don’t you have a rest, ya? You’ve been working hard.â€

Selphie smiled up at Wakka. “It’s okay.†she gave him a quick hug and once again they split to look for the book.

Tidus scrambled over a broken stool and almost tripped on a coil of rope. His trainers had snagged on some wire and now he was stuck. Tugging at his leg made it worse and the wire started to dig in.

“Darn it…†he muttered and tried to break free. He succeeded only in falling flat on his face in the junk. Dust and dirt fell in his mouth. He coughed and blinked away mud. Through his blurred vision he could faintly see something poking out from behind a bin… something that looked like an old book.

“Hy gs!†he slurred. He had tried to say ‘Hey guys!’ but his mouth was filled with dust. He spat it out and tried again.

    “Hey guys! I think I’ve found something!â€

Everyone spun on their heels. “This better not be a false alarm!†said Jack.

“No really! And someone help me up!â€

The group rushed over to obtain the book. Nobody helped Tidus. He asked once again for help and finally Shell helped him.

“How did this happen?†Shell asked as she pulled his foot free. “Clumsiness?â€

    “Uh huh.â€

Shell tutted but pecked his cheek. The colour in Tidus’ face rose. Shell laughed and helped him up. They joined the others who were all looking down at the book’s cover.

The girls stopped outside Riku’s door.

“On the count of three…†Kairi said to Clara.

    Clara nodded.

“One…†Clara wiped her hair from her eyes.

“Two…†Kairi gripped her axe with white knuckles.

“Three!!!†The girls barged straight through the door to the sound of screaming. Kairi whipped her head around the room, looking for Riku or Sora. Finally she spotted them. Sora was lying hurt on the floor. Riku was over him, waving Way To The Dawn about and screaming manically.

“Sora!!†Kairi gasped, running towards him. Riku looked up, a malicious smile on his face. Clara soon followed her friend, striding across the room.

“Put it down!†Kairi bellowed at Riku. Riku sliced Way To The Dawn through the air by Kairi’s face. Kairi shrieked and jumped back sharply and fell onto Clara. They both collapsed to the floor, winded.

“My princess…†Riku gurgled, moving towards them. Kairi tried to stand but a fit of wheezing came upon her. Riku moved forward and reached his hands to her face. With cold fingers he stroked her cheeks, then dug his fingernails into the soft flesh of her neck.

Kairi found her breath. “Get off me you son of a…â€

“Kairi…?†a weak voice said. Kairi melted at the sound. Sora wasn’t unconscious! Clara helped Kairi to her feet as Riku spun around.

“Take this!†Kairi screamed and raised her axe above her head. She tried to bring it down on Riku’s skull but he dodged and pushed the axe back, giving Kairi a dead arm. Kairi roared in frustration as the axe clattered to the floor. When she bent to pick it up, he swooped down and swept her up by the waist. Next thing she knew she was upside down over Riku’s shoulder.

“AHHH help me!†she screamed. From upside down she glimpsed Clara walking towards Riku with the candlestick and Sora trying to get up off the floor. To Kairi’s concern she saw he was in extreme pain.

“Let her go!†Clara yelled, swinging the flame.

    “Or what? Riku sneered.

“I’ll…†Clara’s eyes fell upon a weapon by her feet. She picked it up hastily. “I’ll shoot you!†she aimed the pistol at Riku’s chest.

“Oh but Clara…†Riku said in mock sadness. “You kill me… and you kill poor Kairi.â€

To Clara and Sora’s alarm he brought Kairi down to use as a human shield. Kairi shrieked as she was held tightly to Riku’s chest.

“SORA!†she yelled, her throat caving in on itself. All the blood was pounding in her skull as she was brought sharply back to an upright position.

Clara ran over to Sora and helped him to his feet. To her alarm she saw that Sora had a jagged wound on his hip and white bone jutted out of the oozing flesh. Sora gasped in pain but managed to stay on his feet.

“Here lean on me.†said Clara, steadying herself. However she still did almost buckle under Sora’s weight. Her knees bent but held.

“T-T-Th-Thanks…†Sora said weakly. He summoned the Keyblade half-heartedly. It hung limply in his right hand.

“Now,†began Riku, “this is where it gets interesting. I’m going to… UHHAHH!â€

He had lost his voice as Kairi had regained her strength. As soon as her legs would obey her, she had brought up her knees and kicked back as hard as she could right where it hurt. Riku dropped her and gasped for breath. Next thing he was curled up on the floor, winded.

    “Kairi quick!†screamed Clara. “The pistol!â€

Kairi scrambled over the floor towards the discarded gun. But almost impossibly Riku shot out his arm and his sleeve snagged on Kairi’s shoes. Kairi flew forwards, smashing her teeth on the floor. Blood erupted from her lips, spraying the gun red. Riku laughed with the breath he could muster and Kairi tried in vain to get up but her foot was stuck.

“Kairi!†Sora and Clara said in unison. Kairi groaned. Sweat dripped off her face onto her arm which was helplessly trapped below her. Clara let Sora go and charged towards Riku with the candlestick held high. She whacked Riku across the head and the flames caught on his hair. Next thing his head was a burning inferno, his silver hair alight. He roared and dropped again to the ground, rolling over and over. Kairi freed herself and turned to watch him, the gun now in her arms. Riku was screaming in agony. The smell of burning flesh filled the air as his scalp melted.

“Noooo! My hair!†Riku bellowed. He ran round the room. He looked like a giant Olympic torch sprinting around. Sora thought his hair now resembled a burning bush.

Clara watched with watery eyes. The smoke affected her and she began to cough. She dropped the candlestick to the floor. Tragically it landed on the fluffy rug.

“Clara no!†Kairi screamed. The rug burst into flames. Clara dodged sharply to avoid the fire, shrieking. Sora collapsed onto the floor, unable to support himself. Kairi wanted to help him but the flamey figure of Riku blocked the way.

Suddenly Riku stopped and ran out of the door. Clara grabbed Kairi’s arm and dragged her out into the corridor, still wheezing.

“We can’t let him get away!†Clara whispered in her ear as they stumbled after Riku. “You can help Sora later!â€

The girls sprinted after Riku, holding their dresses above their ankles. Blood from Kairi’s lips dribbled off her chin onto her chest. Clara realised with shock that she didn’t have a weapon.

They had no idea where Riku was taking them, but all was soon revealed. Riku barged through a door on the other side of the house. Clara noted with surprise that it was the master bathroom, a room full of luxury baths, glass statues and about thirty toilets. Her parents liked to think big.

They followed sharply and Kairi found herself surrounded by marble and glass. Riku was ahead of them, his head still alight. He paused for a minute then suddenly flung himself across the room, and went head first straight into a toilet.

There was a loud hissing sound as the fire died. Smoke and steam surrounded Riku’s body.

“Quick! We can hold him down there!†Clara screamed. Kairi reacted immediately, skidding across the smooth floor and falling on top of Riku. Using her body she kept his head in the toilet. He would drown this way, she realised.

Riku struggled against her and flung her off. His head shot out of the water and he gasped for air. Clara came flying out of nowhere, slamming his face back in the toilet water. Riku choked with surprise and a horrible gurgling sound came from the toilet. Kairi squealed and helped Clara force him down.

But again Riku seemed to gain an inhuman strength and pushed them both off. He grabbed the girls by their hair and bashed their skulls against the bowl of the toilet. Red dots appeared in front of Kairi’s eyes and she crumbled to the floor. With a bellow Riku picked up Clara and flung her across the room. She crashed into a shower and disappeared below the eye’s view. There was a terrible crashing sound and a cry of pain.

Meanwhile Kairi had somehow got to her feet, adrenaline coursing through all her veins. With shaking fists she punched Riku in the face, sending him sprawling back into a bathtub. He knocked his temple on the taps and they turned on. Icy water sprayed onto his skull, bouncing off and hitting Kairi. She fell over the edge of the tub and into the bath too. Punching his face she roared with anger, her legs flailing about. They continued to wrestle.

Clara moaned and got to her feet. Something warm trickled down her cheek. She realised with disgust that it was blood. On the other side of the room she saw Kairi and Riku fighting hand to hand. Swaying on her feet, Clara tried to run over but found she was too weary and fell to the ground again. Through blurred eyes she saw the world spin and then she was unconscious.

Meanwhile, Kairi and Riku were still fighting ferociously. Riku chucked her out of the bath. Kairi spun across the marble but stopped when she hit a sink. Riku dived after her but slipped in an almost funny way on the wet floor. His shoes squeaked as he fell on his backside. Kairi would have burst into giggles if she had not been in the state she was in.

“Riku… Please…†Kairi said weakly, stumbling over to him. He laughed manically as Kairi slipped herself and landed right next to him. With horror she realised her dress has split at the seams and now her bum was revealed toiku.

A huge shiver ran up her spine as she realised Riku was purring.

“Me like…†he said perversely. Kairi spat in disgust. She turned around and slapped him on the face.

“Don’t you dare!†she hissed and slapped him again. Riku yelled with anger and scrambled to his feet. Kairi followed suit and they stood facing each other, burning anger in both their eyes.

With a malicious smile Kairi pulled out the shiny handle of the gun. Raising it with shaky hands, she aimed the tip at Riku. Every nerve in her body trembled as her fingers grasped the trigger.

    Showtime.

    Chapter 15

Kairi faced Riku across the bathroom, the gun in her hands. Sweat poured off her temple. The booming of her heart seemed to slow as time itself came to a halt.

Her white fingers gripped the trigger. Riku smiled, his lips curling mockingly. The pistol shook in Kairi’s weak arms.

“Riku…†she said shakily, the gun shuddering.

“You won’t shoot me, Kairi.†he said bluntly.

“I won’t?†she said quietly, her will shattered.

“No you won’t. Poor, weak Kairi. Never had the strongest of souls. Can’t fend for herself. Always has to be the damsel in distress. Always has to be rescued.†Riku went into a strange bow, his arms folded. “I can help you, Kairi. Come to my side. Be my love.â€

Kairi shook even more, this time with anger. “I’m going to kill you!â€

His eyes widened. “Then do it.†The red glare lit up in his pupils and he opened his arms wide, revealing his chest. All his vulnerability. Just there, ready to be killed. If she could just push down the damned trigger.

Crying to herself, Kairi willed her fingers to move. They had frozen. No nerve in her body obeyed her; she couldn’t bring herself to kill someone. Something inside her was stopping her. Something forbade her.

“Stay there.†she said, her voice unsteady. She walked closer, then held the metal tip of the weapon directly over Riku’s heart, jabbing it into the bare flesh of his chest. Riku didn’t flinch. Perhaps he was now considering that Kairi might actually kill him, and was afraid to move.

“Anything you say, my love.†his cold voice replied. Kairi struggled as she considered what to do. She couldn’t kill him. She couldn’t leave him like this, either. She had to help Sora and Clara. And where on earth were Wakka and Tidus?

All these thoughts swirled in her brain, not getting her anywhere. Closing her eyes, Kairi saw a strange white light. The white light enveloped her completely, and the sounds and sights of the present world disappeared.

With shock Kairi opened her eyes to find herself somewhere else.

It was the very same bathroom that she had been in just now. But it was different. Nothing was broken. No sign of a fight at all. The showers and baths were fixed. There was no blood on the floor or walls. None of the glass statues were smashed, and none of the floor tiles were broken.

But Kairi was wrong when she had thought that nothing in the room was broken.

For in front of her, his pale form hunched over, his silver hair lifeless and his face a smile long forgotten, was a broken man.

    *****

Sora groaned as his senses returned. Agony filled every bone in his body. He wondered why he had woken up. His body had barely enough energy left to open his eyes, so he kept them shut. Perhaps it the strange nagging sensation that had woken him up, the one that hovered at the edge of his mind.

He couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was. All he knew was that somebody needed his help.

    Kairi! Of course!

“I’m coming, Kairi!†he said, opening his eyes and abruptly standing up. But the shock was too much and his legs suddenly turned to jelly. Again the floor welcomed him. With horror he noted the injury to his hip. Twisting his body to get a better look, he saw the bone jutting out and the jagged flesh.

Giving up, he fell back into unconsciousness again.

    *****

“Honey? Pass me the coffee, please darling.â€

A red haired man passed his wife her cup of coffee. Just the way she like it. Smooth and almost too frothy. His wife smiled and held the cup in her cold hands.

“I hate these summer storms,†she grumbled, “ruin the nice summer days, eh?â€

Her husband agreed. “I hope Clara has looked after the house well.â€

“She will have. She’s a responsible girl, Howard.†The woman tucked her curly blonde hair behind her ear and crinkled her grey coloured eyes.

“I know,†Howard replied, “but my little girl can be rash.â€

The couple laughed and finished their drinks. Once the storm was over, the train would start moving again. Only one day left and their holiday would be over. They could return home and see their daughter again.

Suddenly the rain stopped and the couple smiled in relief. The train master announced that they would be moving again soon. Howard took his wife by the arm and they sat down side by side on a train seat.

“Cindy?†Howard said. His wife turned to him, nodding.

    “Yes?â€

    “Nothing.â€

Cindy laughed, then snorted. That’s the man I married, alright. She thought. Clara sometimes liked to joke like her father, too.

Howard stifled a yawn. “C’mon, lets get off to bed. Last day tomorrow.â€

    Cindy groaned. “Don’t remind me!â€

The two reached their cabin and sleepily climbed into bed. Within minutes, they were both soundly asleep.

    *****

    All was silent.

    “Riku?â€

The broken man before Kairi was silent. His face was a hollow mask of what it had been. His eyes were lifeless sockets. It was as though his very soul had been sucked out. With unblinking eyes Riku stared at the floor, too guilty to look anyone in the eye.

“Riku?†Kairi said again, getting more urgent. She stepped towards him, holding her arm out.

He made no move. With caressing hands Kairi touched his arm. He pulled away suddenly, and finally looked at her.

Kairi cried out. A shattered boy looked her in the face. He had no will to live. Nothing to cling on to. It was Riku, but Riku broken. Broken into a million pieces. His heart ripped to shreds on his sleeve. All this just by looking into his eyes.

“Riku…?†she said, shaking. Again she tried to reach out to him, to just hold his arm. She felt so mean just leaving his bruised heart alone. Again he pulled away, his eyes so filled with hurt Kairi almost started to cry.

“Don’t touch me Kairi.†he spoke at last. Every word was like agony. So pain-filled, so broken. “I can’t hurt you ever again.â€

    “Oh Riku…†Kairi said.

Tears began to fall down his cheeks. The tears of a lost man.

“I’m so sorry.†he whispered. Kairi shook her head.

“It’s not your fault!†she said, frustrated. “None of it was! It was that… that stupid potion!â€

    “I…†his voice faltered. “I can’t ever forgive myself.â€

“No….†Kairi said, “Please Riku. You have to forgive yourself. For me…â€

As soon as the words were out of her mouth, she realised they were a mistake. The infatuated, evil Riku would do anything for her. The normal Riku might have too. But this Riku had seen himself do terrible things in her name.

Riku’s body shook with the effort of holding back tears. Kairi reached for him once more, feeling terrible for not comforting him. It was in her nature to help the needy.

Riku recoiled from her once more, terrified that touching her would do her more harm. Kairi kept trying, until finally he gave up and their skin made contact.

His skin was cold and lifeless below her touch. She ran her fingers up his arms and reached his face. Salty tears ran onto her hands as she stroked his face. He closed his eyes, ashamed.

They sat down on the floor. Riku had no will left, so he lay in her lap. Kairi soothed him.

“It’s okay,†she said softly, “ we’ll find a cure for you. You can have your old body back.

Everything will be back to normal. I promise.â€

    “Don’t promise!†he said quickly.

    “Why not?â€

“Because you won’t be able to fufill it…†he said. Kairi hugged him close, nestling his face near hers.

“Yes I will,†she said, “I’ll find a cure, then everything will be back to normal. Me, you and Sora will go back to the way we were. We’ll go visit the island every day. We’ll hang out together. We’ll eat sea salt ice cream. We’ll play on the beach. We’ll play blitzball with Wakka and Tidus. We’ll go swimming with Selphie. We’ll… We can do all of those things, Riku. Once we find a way to heal you.â€

Riku seemed as if he almost believed Kairi for a moment. But then the idyllic haze over his eyes disappeared, and the reality returned. The harsh, sad reality.

“No.†he said, pulling his already broken heart. “Kairi, you don’t understand. You don’t realise.â€

“Realise what?†she said, the stroking of his face stopped.

He paused and a single tear rolled off his face.

Looking her in the eye, he murmured quietly.
    “There is no cure.â€

    Kairi’s world crashed around her.

    *****

    “I-I just can’t believe it.†Tidus said glumly.

“What are we going to tell Sora?†Wakka mumbled.

    “So this means…†Selphie started.

“… We’ll never get the old Riku back.†Tidus finished. Shell put a comforting arm around his shoulders. The group had been in a solemn, depressed mood ever since Jack and Sally had read from the book that there was no cure for an overdose. The effects would last for eternity if they had to. They’d never run out, and a cure had never been found.

Now the group were sitting on the sands of the beach, unsure of what to do.

“We can’t just go back and tell them we can’t save him!†Selphie moaned.

“But we have no choice. We have to go back sooner or later, ya?†Wakka spoke.

“I suppose…†Shell said. “Hey, where did Sally and Jack go? Anyone see?â€

“They said home.†Selphie replied. The young two had left around forty minutes ago. Now the time was flying by. The time of indecision.

Tidus turned to address the group. “Time to go, then,†he said sadly, “to Clara’s again.â€

    Wakka nodded. “To Clara’s.â€

The group headed back to the mainland, to deliver the bad news and to see what had happened.

“No…†Kairi said, refusing to believe it, even though the truth rung in her ears. “No!â€

“I’m never going to change, Kairi.†Riku said, his body cold. Kairi cradled him, a terrible sadness creeping into her.

Never again would Riku be the way he was. Forever would the evil Riku be among them.

Tears fell heavily onto Riku, splashing his face. His own tears mixed with hers and fell onto the marble floor of the bathroom. Holding his face close, Kairi whispered to him.

“I’ll miss you so much, Riku. You were always so nice to me. Without you it’ll never be the same.â€
Riku sobbed, and Kairi had an idea.

“But you never know, we might be able to change the evil Riku. We might be able to free you. You can return to your old body!â€

Riku shook his head, inches away from her face.
“No. Kairi. Even if I returned, I could never live with myself. I’d spend my days as a walking shadow of who I was, and my nights as a victim of nightmares. I don’t want to return, Kairi. I couldn’t live with the pain.â€

“Donâthat!†Kairi cried. Riku shook his head.

    “Kairi…†Riku began.

    She sniffed. “Yes?â€

“I want you to promise me one more thing.â€

    Silence filled the bathroom. “Anything.â€

    “Promise me you’ll do it?â€

    Kairi nodded. “I… I promise.â€

Riku stopped talking and closed his eyes. The grip on her hands was like a vice. Kairi saw that is face had gone deathly pale.

“I want you to kill me.â€

    Oh. Em. Gee.

He's asking for her to kill him?!

    Aww, poor Riku!!

No, it's not gonna happen. I'm not gonna believe that he'll die in this story.

Anyway, good update. It felt kind of short to me, but I might just read fast.
