    Chapter 20

    “Clara!? Clara!? We’re home, sweetie!”

Clara’s head snapped up and she looked towards the stairs. It was very inconsiderate for her parents to call her; after all, at this time of night she’d usually be asleep. But, then again, she hadn’t seen them for a while.

Leaning towards the stairs, Clara took a deep breath in. “Hang on I’ll be right down!”

Tucking her hair behind her ears, she accidentally nicked one of the cuts on her face and blood seeped out. Sighing, she dabbed it with her index finger. The wounds were still ugly to see and to touch.

She had a lot of explaining to do. Hopefully all her friends had escaped the house by now.

“Mum! Dad! I’ve missed you! How was your holiday!?”

Bright and cheery, Clara bounced down the stairs like she had no cares in the world. Her parents faces were instantly filled with horror when they saw her.

    Well, that was hardly surprising.

    *****

“Where are you taking us, Tidus!?” Wakka hissed, Kairi in his arms. What the group had originally thought was going to be an easy escape had turned out to be complicated. Clara’s house was, after all, a mansion. The downstairs was a maze; a cornucopia of rooms and galleries. The gang had made the unwise decision of making Tidus leader. Wakka came second, with Kairi, and he was followed by Selphie and a shaking Shell.

“I…” said Tidus. “I.. thought it would be this way..”

Selphie face palmed. “You heard what Clara said! We have to get out before her parents find us!”

“I know!” Tidus hissed back. He rubbed his head as if it was sore.

The group walked into a long hallway, with dozens of paintings on the walls. The pictures were of the island; the beaches, the village, the school. Perhaps Clara’s parents were artists.

At the end of the hall was a window. Beyond that; open gardens. The back door! Everyone began to run towards it, Wakka struggling to keep up with Kairi in his hands. Suddenly he caught his foot on the back of Selphie’s shoe and sent her flying. Shell skidded to a halt to avoid falling over Selphie and as a result flew backwards onto Wakka. Kairi fell out of his arms and after a struggle on the floor Wakka realised he had his head between Shell’s legs.

“Mmffgghh!!” he said, his voice muffled. Suddenly Tidus began to roar and tugged on Wakka’s legs. Shell kicked out her feet and hit him on the nose. Watching this, Selphie covered her eyes in embarrassment. She.. Felt angry at Wakka. No. Not anger. Repulsed by him, almost.

But she could think about that later. Right now, they had to get out of the house.

“Get up, you idiots.” She said and hauled Shell to her feet. Wakka sighed with relief and got up awkwardly. Selphie picked up Kairi delicately and gently pulled her best friend over her shoulder. It was just like Sora had done for his own best friend a while ago.

“Well THAT was uncomfortable!” Wakka laughed sheepishly. Tidus glared at him and Shell blushed crimson. Selphie tutted, irritated, and carried on walking.

When would they ever grow up?

    *****

Kairi stood opposite Sora, her eyes shut. She looked serene, the light from the water reflected on her cheeks. The two of them were in Traverse Town, in the underground cavern. They had been talking for a while. Sora knew he needed to leave soon, to save Riku, but right now he felt an overwhelming need to stay with Kairi.

Suddenly Kairi held out her hand and gently touched Sora’s arm. Opening her eyes, she put something in his palm. Looking away from her endlessly blue eyes, Sora saw a star-shaped… object lying there. It was pink with a pale yellow centre; and it kind of reminded him of a papou fruit.

He opened his mouth to say something, but Kairi beat him to it.

“Take this,” she said, her calm voice ringing out in the cavern, “it’s my lucky charm. Be sure to bring it back to me!”

Sora closed his fist over the charm protectively. “Don’t worry. I will.”

Her mouth curled up at the edges, hinting at a smile. “Promise?”

The look in her eyes was hurtful; like she doubted he would make it through this and was worried for him.

“Promise.” He said simply, without a doubt.

Kairi looked into his eyes, blinking rapidly as if to hold back tears.

“Don’t ever forget,” she said softly, “wherever you go, I’m always with you.”

Sora stepped towards her, his arms outstretched. Tilting his head downwards, he brought Kairi’s lips up to his and-

Wait, Sora thought, that never happened…

Spluttering, Sora raised his head out of the water. For a while now he had been floating lazily in the water, about twenty metres out to sea. Around him was nothing but darkness, the water was pitch black and only on the horizon was a tiny hint of light beginning to show. Lying on his back, Sora admired the stars. Every single experience of his life was coming back to him; it was easy to reflect on things when it was so quiet.

His thoughts always seemed to flit between Riku and Kairi. With a pang Sora realised they hadn’t sorted out Riku’s body. He was still in one of Clara’s beds, his icy hands curled over the blankets and his unblinking eyes staring up at the canopy.

With a start another memory hit Sora suddenly. It was from when he was very young. Before the time Kairi had come into his life.

“Eww!” Sora squealed. “That was gross!”

Riku pulled his hand away from Sora’s and grinned. “Now we’re blood brothers!” He said proudly.

Sora smiled and sucked his bleeding hand. They were sitting on the small island out to sea; the sun was going down and the boys were defying their parents by being out so late. Riku was eating a mango; he had decided that they were his favourite fruit.

“Should we head back soon?” Sora said uncertainly. He always asked Riku what to do; he was older and clearly knew much more than himself.

“Nah. Give it a while. We’ll walk home together.”

Sora rolled over on the sand. Pebbles dug into his back but he didn’t mind. He was deliriously happy. Riku laughed at his behaviour.

“Look at you, all smiles.” He said, but the corners of his mouth betrayed a smile too.

“Hey Riku,” Sora started to say, Riku turning towards him, “think we’ll be friends forever?”

Riku snorted. “Of course. It’s not like I’ll ever get rid of you!”

Sora frowned. Riku poked out his tongue to show he was kidding.

“Yeah, forever.” He continued. “Until we die!”

Sora raised his hand for a high five and Riku accepted it. “That’s ages…” Sora said.

“Yep. Nobody is gonna kill me off anytime soon!”

The boys laughed and Riku threw his mango core into the ocean. The sun had finally set and twilight had settled in. Riku helped Sora to his feet and together they made their way home. Sora decided that he would be friends with Riku no matter what. He wouldn’t let his friend die, or himself. Then they could be friends forever.

Salty tears dripped into the water and mixed with the currents. A few rays of light had finally crept over the horizon; perhaps it was time to head home. Sora was reluctant, however; it would mean facing Kairi, his family- and Riku for the last time. How easy it would be to just drift here forever and forget real life.

With a sigh that would’ve shaken the hearts of many, Sora started to swim his way home.

    ******

Selphie groaned as the weight of Kairi began to take its toll. She was on the path to Kairi’s house; the boys had left her a while back. It seemed ages since she had been home, but in reality it was only a short while. Much longer for Kairi and the others. They hadn’t been home since Friday. Goodness knows what day it was now.

“C’mon Kairi,” murmured Selphie, “wake up!”

Kairi was completely out of it. Now she would have to explain Kairi’s story to Kairi’s parents as well. Seeing her best mate’s house in the distance Selphie picked up speed. She noticed that the sun was slowly but surely beginning to rise.

There was just one thing for sure; once she got home she was going to sleep like a log.

    *****

    A few days later….

    ~ ~ ~

Kairi stirred under the bedcovers. Slowly her eyes crept open. She was at home; in her room. How long had she been asleep? It felt like forever. With a pang she remembered what had happened the last time she had been conscious. Sora’s anger at the news of Riku’s death. How he had attacked her…

Despite the warmth of her bed Kairi shivered. To her alarm she realised she was naked. Who had undressed her? Then she thought it must have been Selphie. She had a faint memory of being hauled over her best friends shoulder.

Glancing at the clock on her wall, she saw it was half past ten in the morning. The date said it was a Tuesday.

Wait!? Tuesday!? How long HAVE I been asleep!?

Sitting up, Kairi began to pull on clothes from her wardrobe. She soon discovered a scrawled note from Selphie on her dressing table. Inside it read that she had brought Kairi home and had explained what had happened to her anxious parents. It went on to read sorry, we had to undress you because your clothes were soaked in blood.

“Aww man,” said Kairi to herself. She was picturing the inevitable reunion with Sora. How awkward it would be. She wondered if he was still angry.

Suddenly the house phone began to ring. Kairi jumped to her feet and sprinted down the stairs. Nobody was home. Her parents must be at work.

“Hello?” She said, picking up the receiver.

“Hi! How are you feeling?” Selphie’s loud voice came through the speaker. Kairi winced; her ears felt delicate.

“Im okay. How did things work out with you and the guys? And Clara?”

“Everyone’s fine. Eventually my parents believed me, but trust me, it took a while. Clara’s parents went insane on her firstly, but once they realised what she had been through they were fine. The guys are cool, as usual. Shell rang me yesterday; she hadn’t been gone long anyway from home so her parents didn’t really care. Oh, and Kairi… Riku’s funeral is this Thursday.”

“I…Okay.” Kairi croaked. Finally she added, “Sora?”

Selphie paused. “He’s refusing to leave his room. Even his parents can’t get him out. Its like.. He’s given up on life, Kairi.”

Kairi felt tears coming to her eyes and so quickly said goodbye. Selphie said farewell with a choked up voice. She claimed she had hay fever.

Kairi quickly decided she needed some fresh air. Her mind was buzzing. Grabbing her coat from the wardrobe, she left the house and trod the familiar path to the beach. It was an average day on the island; people walking the main road, shoppers marching with their arms laden with bags, new mothers and their babies chatting on benches. But inside Kairi’s mind it was different. Something had changed. Or the way she saw things had altered.

Her clean white trainers left grass and hit the sand.

    *****

Selphie hoisted her bag higher up her shoulder. Itching her cheek, she pushed her over-large sunglasses up her nose. The beach was surprisingly empty. Then again, it wasn’t particularly hot today. It was overcast; pale clouds filled the horizon. Swishing her feet through the water, Selphie thought she saw somebody she recognised sitting in the sand about fifty metres away. Getting closer, she realised the dark red hair was unmistakable.

“Kairi?” Selphie pondered aloud. The girl’s head snapped up. It was Kairi alright. To Selphie’s concern she saw her friends body was awfully skinny; she looked like she would snap at any moment. At the sides of her pink vest Kairi’s ribs jutted out. Kairi’s usually stunning face looked thin and drawn.

Kairi didn’t say a word. Instead, she rushed to her feet and launched a hug at Selphie. Gripping her friend tightly, Selphie shuddered inside when she felt Kairi’s bones digging into her. Her friend hadn’t taken very good care of herself recently.

“How are you feeling today, hun?” Selphie said softly, holding her friends arm.

    “Weak.” Kairi mumbled glumly.

Selphie sighed. “Are you going Thursday?”

“I think I have to. Even though I’ve said my goodbyes.”

“Aww.” Selphie gripped her more tightly. Kairi’s face was ghostly pale.

    “I’m going to see Sora.”

    “You’re WHAT?” Selphie said, outraged.

“I’m going to see him. He can’t hide forever.”

“Kairi, he should be coming to find you. To apologise! If he wants to hide out in his room, let him do that!”

    “But.. I.. Still love him.”

Selphie covered her face in her hands. “Okay. But make sure he apologises. Or he’s gonna have to deal with me, okay?” A fierce look settled on her face, transforming her.

Kairi nodded, and tried to leave. Selphie held her back, motioning to one of the deckchairs scattered across the beach. Perching on the end of one, Kairi examined her friend through pearly eyes.

    Selphie hesitated. “I…”

    “Go on.”

    “I broke up with Wakka.”

“WHAT!?” Kairi almost yelled. It was her turn to be surprised. “Why, Selphie? You were a great couple!”

Selphie looked away, her eyes downcast. “No we weren’t. It seemed like it at first, but now, now he’s just not right for me.”

“Okay, I understand.” Kairi said soothingly. Kind of, she added silently.

“I’ll see you later.” Selphie nodded. “I’m going to Shell’s.”

Kairi returned the nod. It was time to head for Sora’s.

Walking across the beach Kairi reached the main road again and admired the summer flowers that had suddenly sprang up alongside the path. It was a cloudy day, but a beautiful day all the same. A fresh breeze tossed Kairi’s hair across her face.

Reaching Sora’s house, Kairi knocked the door nervously. It opened immediately. A middle aged woman with brown hair tied back and bright blue eyes stood on the front step. She was unmistakably Sora’s mother. Their facial expressions were the same. Right now she had an anxious frown on.

“Can I see Sora, please?” Kairi said innocently.

The woman frowned. “Kairi? Why, I haven’t seen you since you were a little ‘un! How you’ve grown! But there’s no mistaking those rosy cheeks!”

Kairi blushed as if to prove the woman’s point.

“I’m Miranda. Well, you can see him if you want. If you get into his room, that is. He’s locked and bolted it. Refusing to come out, he is. I know what happened to him these last few days, he explained that at least; but now.. He’s a different boy.”

Kairi wrinkled her nose sadly. Miranda continued. “Maybe seeing you will get him to come out. After all, you were close once, right?”

    “Yeah.”

Miranda let Kairi past her and Kairi slipped off her shoes shakily. Climbing the stairs, she counted the steps to occupy her mind. The truth was she didn’t know what to say to Sora. She just hoped it would go smoothly. Glancing at the walls, she almost laughed at a photo of a young Sora sitting on a swing. Sea salt ice cream covered his lips and cheeks. A smiling Miranda stood next to her son proudly.

Reaching Sora’s door, Kairi tested the handle gently. It didn’t budge.

Softly, ever so softly, she called his name.

    “Sora?”

    *****

Sora lay in bed with his head under the covers. The pillow on his head stifled any noises from outside. He had had enough of unwanted visitors banging loudly on his door. The oxygen under the covers had almost run out; the air was stale now. Sora liked it that way. Perhaps it would be nice to die in the comfort of his own bed.

The hunger pangs he had experienced a few days ago when he had returned home had long since disappeared. He had discovered a new kind of resilience. He had grown a tougher skin recently. Nobody could affect him now.

    Except…

What was that faint noise in the distance? Was that somebody calling his name softly? It would have been too quiet to hear, except that it was so gentle and loving it seemed to pierce his mind. Pulling back the duvet slowly, Sora felt fresh, cool air caress his face. Turning to face the door, he listened for the sound again.

    “Sora?”

Sora froze. It was a heavenly voice, filled with something he did not recognise. He felt so cold and lonely inside; and yet, this new voice filled a tiny warmth within him. Or the prospect of a new fire of hope inside.

“Sora..?” The voice murmured again. Sora sat up, almost entranced. Wiping his eyes, which seemed so dry recently, he stood up unsteadily. It took a lot of effort. He hadn’t eaten in days, and his injuries still were not fully healed. His blood soaked bandages were limp at his sides. His mouth and throat were parched from lack of water. He took one shaky step towards the door, and another, and another, until he was leaning against the wood.

“Sora?” Came the voice through the wood.
“… K…ai..” He tried to say, except his throat was too dry to talk. He coughed harshly and tried again. “Kairi?”

The voice seemed to freeze. “Yes, that’s what they call me.”

Suddenly Sora doubled up, his heart muscles straining. He felt as if somebody had driven a stake into his heart, making them spasm. A torturing memory came back to him; of him, beating up Kairi. The stake in his heart was guilt. Why had he done it? Had he been so filled with grief? For the first time in days he felt something happen to him… Emotions. They were rushing back. Sora groaned.

    “Are you okay, Sora?”

Sora couldn’t answer. He bent over, all his muscles aching. Suddenly he couldn’t breathe. Bending over caused the gash in his side to tear open. Hot blood erupted everywhere. Crying out, he gripped the door handle. He heard a gasp through the wood.

“Sora? Sora!? Answer me? What’s going on?”

Sora tried to answer but he had no breath. His heart burned with pain. Trying to take in air was torture. His cracked and broken lips rubbed against the door and splinters went in his mouth. There wasn’t enough water in his body for him to cry. Hitting the floor, he flopped about weakly.

    “Sora! Open the door! Please!”

Sora groaned and Kairi began to panic. Still refusing to hit the door, she bit her lips anxiously. Sora groaned even more loudly, blood escaping his bandages. His eyes were bloodshot from lack of sleep; he had been too tormented to sleep.

    “Open the door! Sora, please!”

Sora managed to gather some inner strength and flipped the lock on the door. Kairi fell through the door suddenly; she had been leaning against it. Hitting Sora’s weakened body she gasped and closed the door behind her. Throwing away any fears she had of him she immediately knelt by his side. He was a sorry sight.

Sora’s heart ached at the sight of Kairi’s beautiful face. So filled with concern… It pierced the tough armour he had built up around him. Raising himself up on his elbows, he struggled to say something. Suddenly collapsing, she reacted quickly and caught him in her arms.

“Sora, what have you done to yourself?”

Sora only sighed gently in reply. To talk would just make it worse. Closing his eyes, he screwed up his face to the pain. Kairi’s soft hands suddenly touched his face and the pain seemed to melt away. Relaxing, he felt something touch his parched lips and realised it was water. Opening his mouth, he let water dribble onto his tongue. It was his first drink in days. It was heaven. A small bit of energy returned to him.

Finally he cleared his throat and managed to say something.

    “Kairi…”

She put a finger to his lips. “Shhhh. Save your strength.”

“No.” He said. “Listen. I.. I’m sorry for what I did to you. I’m so sorry. I know nothing I can say will reverse what I did, but just.. I.. I’m sorry. Inside.. I thought I would never live again. Grief ate through me.”

    “Sora…”

“No. Wait. Let me finish.” He coughed suddenly, a small trickle of blood leaving his lips. “I will always love you Kairi. You know that. It’s unconditional. Inside, I will never forgive myself for what I did. Never. But please, just hear this one plea. I don’t mind if you never talk to me again. Just know - I am sorry.”

Coughing again, his head flopped to the side. Kairi awakened from deep thought, her head snapping upwards. Grabbing his face with her cool hands, she rubbed his cheeks.

“C’mon Sora!” She cried, opening his eyelids. His pupils were fuzzy, but still in focus. He was drifting in and out of consciousness. “Sora, I.. I forgive you. Of course I do. My love is unconditional. Like always.” She smiled faintly. A wave of relief seemed to pass of Sora’s face and suddenly he was out cold. Sighing, Kairi lowered him to the floor and stood up. Now what to do?

She couldn’t leave him on the floor. So, summoning her strength, she carefully gathered him up and hoisted him over her shoulder. It was agony on her back and her bony frame almost collapsed under his weight. She staggered over to the bed and lowered him on the covers. Then she fell down next to him, and the comfy surface tempted her into sleep.

Outside the room Miranda put her eye to the keyhole. Sighing with relief, she went downstairs to tell her husband the good news. She would leave the two young people alone for now; after all the pain they had been through, they deserved it.

    Funny you should mention that...
Actually calling it the addiction was meant to symbolise Riku's addiction to Kairi.. but in the end, it kind of works both ways. You can be addicted to a story, right?

The update.. I've no idea when that is coming. I haven't started writing it yet, ive been quite busy IRL lately.

Another story? Ill probably write one, but it won't be linked to this one at all. But you'll have to wait and see. If I did make one, hopefully it'd be as popular as this! xD
