When I think A.I. I think Star Trek: TNG's Data. I think the ability for a machine to think and aspire to perform its task more efficiently is a remarkable thing. Giving a machine higher reasoning to the point where it is able to reason that it is better than the task it performs is dangerous in my opinion.

@ Shuya Nanahara. There's still probability in instinct-- it is simply a series possible outcomes and one choosing the best possible one-- and a machine can be taught to calculte in such a way.

The only problem is that humans always have to push things as far as they can, meaning they will make a robot as smart, fast etc as they can just to prove that they can. Gah, I was going to say something else but I can't remember ><

I was expecting to say this but no one did. Asimov was actually all for the robots the three laws governed them perfectly and such. I never read it I just heard that this was so. AI was a sad movie.

On topic, AI is like what a bunch of people say not only a long way off but to create a machination like a human would be damn near impossible for us. Think about it a computer can already out think and out strategize a person. However they are confined to parameter and thus cannot react to anything outside the programming. This makes the AI system very hard to create not everything will go perfectly scripted as the program would allow.

I think I'm wrong here 'cause I don't know much about this but I still sorta think this.

A.I would not help humanity in the long run because if technology becomes what humans rely on it and it is taken away or turned against them then they will not be able to survive effectively enough.
Most movies that are Sci-fi are usually theories of something that could happen, so don't block out completely.

Uh, people talk about technology not helping people in the long run, but what about computers? We rely on them for nearly everything these days. The only reason I can interact with any of you, or even know that you exist is because of computers.

I believe that if you honestly want to bring movies into a discussion such as this, you'd have to acknowledge the fact that they're exaggerated in order to be at least mildly entertaining, while at the same time possibly teaching us some sort of lesson. That being said, I think that saying because of the fact that Haley Joel Osment made you sad is a reason to say that artificial intelligence is wrong.

I'm all for A.I., but I believe that we should stick to doing something a bit more within our grasps before we attempt that. Lower gas prices, then I'll worry about A.I. XD

A.I. would be a scary experiance, but it would be something new and exciting. All these possibilites in the world have happened, like the computer. Why not go further?

Thats why the blow to humanity will be so effective, humans rely on computers and humans lose them they will be completly defenseless against nature.

Eh, I dont really think it's a good thing to make robots and such. Other wise, we will either get lazy and get fat or the robots will try to over rule us if they could think freely..

    Bump much?

Anyway, it is going to happen at some point. Human nature forces us to take everything we do to absolute limits just to prove that we can. So if we can make a super strong, fast, intelligent, sentient and learning AI/computer then we will. Then it will probably become smart enough to realise it is better than us and take it's rightful place at the top.

There's good and evil potential in just about everything, from blenders to nuclear energy. Whether or not AI will be a problem depends mainly on the person who either programs the AI, or the one who abuses the AI for selfish reasons. If we can try to limit such usings, the possibility of an AI 'world domination' threat will diminish.

It depends on the programmers just to add a safety device for the A.I.
It will either start small but then evil and what not
or it will either start small and eventually helping mankind

Well as far as if this is a good thing....it depends what level we take things to. I think there's just a point where we should stop, of corse humans are stupid that way, they do something just to prove they can :/ Although as it stands now, I think AI is good in video games. Lets just all hope people are smart enough to program their precious creations properly.

No I wouldn't think so, it's not very likely, that's just a bunch of sci-fi crap that's exagerated to make it somewhat more entertaining.

    Artificial Intelligence.

Current robotics are only capable of being able to intellectualize.A significant number of robots are used in manufacturing for example.Where emotionional cosiderations are not a factor for them to necessitate their fundamental process. However our uses for robots are now incipient as we are still in the early stages of their development.

The thing with AI is that currently it is limited to programming parameters. It literally can't think outside of the box. Once it reaches the limit of it's programming it stagnates.

Once they make machines which are self-learning, they can pass those boundries and the possiblities are limitless. Once this happens I think that they should be accepted into society as a new race or something. Integrating them into humanity rather than continuing to treat them as tools. They would be too smart to take that anymore.

I think artifical intellgince is a neutral thing that can be used good or bad depending the way one uses it.
But any AI should always be set with the 3 laws.
I loved i robot though that was hilarious
"laws are meant to be broken"lol

As long as we don't give the AI a MCP(lol), and have human operators we will be just fine.

i think its good for games but it could be bad for robots...

I think it's ok, as long as it's put in the right hands.

But if a terrorist or some asswhack like that gets it, we're screwed.

Yeah terrorists with that technologie would....
    *breathes*
    DESTROY US ALL!!!!!!!!!!!
    sorry could not resist
But all robots must follow the three laws, if they don't they won't just kill people. they will turn on their owners. and then its world domination.
but mabye their should be more laws
