I want to buy Pokemon Y so I can play with my sister who is getting x and a 3ds (don't tell her) for Christmas but I don't want to pay $40 for it. are you kidding me? I could get like 3 new psp games for the same price.

and don't tell me its because it's new because Theatrhythm is the same

It's not necessarily a matter of being new. It's also a matter of popularity.
X and Y are a combination of the two, so there's that. Theatrhythm is actually a damn good rhythm game, so the popularity of it could be affecting the price.

Ha, this guy thinks popular games are expensive? In two years, they'll be a penny on amazon because they made so many carts. Try getting a one-print game like Xenoblade for under $30 sometime.... Hell, get it less than $50 and I'll be impressed.

Except Nintendo always keeps their prices high so even their bestsellers manage to keep an unnaturally high price.

That's because it's in demand. Nintendo doesn't set their prices. Do you really think they control eBay and Amazon after markets? They stay in demand

Eh, wording was a little off, but I meant that Nintendo bestsellers always keep unnaturally high prices.
Part of this is because Nintendo rarely drops prices for their games.

Except it has nothing to do with Nintendo and every thing to do with the retailers and the demand.

Also first party titles almost always stay priced really high. I remember when Halo 3 was 2 years old and it was still selling for $40. The Last of Us is like 6 months old and it's still selling for its original retail price.

Nintendo has outright said they keep their prices high so they don't devalue their products

Nintendo cost is high as a supplier for a retailer. As in, the only price they control is the price per game for a shipment to a retailer. After it gets to the retailer's distribution center, it is up to the retailer to distribute it to markets and set the price. This is how all retail works. Once it leaves Nintendo's warehouse, it's out of their hands. The company bought their shipment and made Nintendo their money. Because Nintendo gets small bulk orders from most retailers outside of Pokemon games, it sets the supply low from get-go. Lego City Undercover is already a rare game. So even if one of their games slightly gets in demand, it's going to sky rocket the price even further. You don't really think Nintendo has a department to set prices for individual retailers they have no stake or ownership in, do you?

You act like companies go around setting whatever price they want for things. They still need to make a profit, for one thing, but there's a 'recommended' retail price for a reason.
I also have a hard time believing there's as limited of a supply as you think. Obviously I can't speak for every store, but I've never seen a store without a high stock of the latest/greatest Mario, Zelda Pokemon, etc.
Obviously not having a low supply doesn't change much if there's a high enough demand, but yeah.
Obviously if a retailer wants to sell Nintendo games for less, there's nothing stopping them, but why would they? Especially if Nintendo doesn't want them to?

Well, retailers can set whatever price they want. Hence why they'll put things clearance for half as much as they spent.

Again, Nintendo doesn't care. How they're securing their brand is keeping the bulk priced high because it limits the supply. You'll never see Twilight Princess being sold for a penny, but bet yo' ass you'll see CoD and Guitar Hero games because they just keep printing copies and retailers keep ordering them so they end up with thousands just in a warehouse and not selling.

You're thinking too casual here. Game devs get paid by the publisher, the publisher gets paid when the retailer buys their stock, the retailer gets paid when you buy it. Simple chain
