Being American of Mexican heritage, my family told me about this a long time ago. I don't think it holds any ground however. These kinds of "omens" exist in many cultures around the world and they usually have different dates of "the end". I'm sure this one is no more real then the next.

However, there is a planetary allignment around that time...

 

A lot of my friends at school have been mentioning this. Although, remember 6/6/6? Everyone said that something bad was going to happen and the day came and went. I don't think anything will happen. Over history there have been countless times where people have said that the world was going to end. Nothing happened.

 

There was something along the line of this, but a natural force was supposed to cause distruction and stuff because the planets were lined up..but nothing happened.

 

The mayans were smart, i give them that, but there is no way they can pridect the end of the world. unless the can time travel or actually see the future its impossible... just cant happen.

 

I don't believe it. People have been saying the world will end on certain days forever. Did the world end in 2000? Nope. Did it end on 6/6/06? No, it didn't. Therefore, I think everybody's getting all hyped up for nothing. It's just an attempt to scare people and mess with their heads. Nobody can predict the end of the world. I mean, how would the Mayans have known? It doesn't make logical sense.

 

I think that's why the Mayans ended their calender on that day. Correct if I'm wrong, but they were excellent astronomers and thought that to be the end of the world. I do believe that it will indeed happen, and we cannot predict what will go down. But the world is not going to end anytime soon. Humans might die out because we're too stupid as a society to remain stable, but that doesn't mean the Earth is going to explode or something.

The sun is an average sized, if not smaller than an average sized, star. It's much to small to go supernova, and it will transform into a White Dwarf if I remember correctly, but that will be in about 5 billion years and I doubt humans will make it that far.

I graduate from highschool that day, the world shouldn't end on that day because its when I leave and step into the real world >|

Mayans are intelligent people, but the Sun won't splode on that day, it's got like another 5 billion years left.

 

I now hope the world does end.

Anyways, I did some research (which only took about 25 seconds)
The specific calendar that stated the world would end on that date is the Mesoamerican Long COunt Calendar.
That calendar uses a specific formula to identify a date.
On the Table of Inscriptions in Palenque the following date was found: 9.8.9.13.0 8 Ahau 13 Pop (March 24, 603 Gregorian) with a distance date of 10.11.10.5.8.
The resulting date is given as 1.0.0.0.0.8 5 Lamat 1 Mol,[10] or October 21, 4772 — almost 3,000 years into the future.
The king Pacal of Palenque predicted that on this date the eightieth Calendar Round anniversary of his accession will be celebrated, suggesting he did not believe the world would end in 2012.


In other words, the world will NOT end.
Although, I believe something big WILL happen.

 

Well, I do believe in fate and destiny, but this is rubbish. It's not going to happen.

 

Well just look at the previous end of the world theories, non of it happened.
So I don't think this one would happen.
Plus, we are all merely mortals, we may never know the future.

 

Ehh. The Bible says that God will choose our fates and noone will know when, so I doubt the world will end, but I don't doubt that MAYBE something will happen, but we never know until we're actually faced with the issue, so I don't really care.

 

Mayyybeee the economic crisis will raise dramatically and everyone in the whole world will have nowhere to live anymore. Nowhere to live in... Nothing to eat on... Nothing to live for...

 

The world would end in December of that year. So assuming you do live in the united states, you'll be in TRW for about... oh... 6 months. :]

 

People like the ones who think that the world will end in 2012 are the reason I need to be medicated.

 

Actually, at that point in time, the world's axis will have made a 180 degree rotation. That basically means that our axis will be tilted in the other way. This will cause some weird things to happened and could potentially Switch around the seasons. So yeah, some life may end up dieing. but the world will probably stand whole.

I never said anything about the magnetic field. It's that axis. The axis rotates in a wobbly way it doesn't turn upside down.

 

So in 2012 the the earth is going to suddenly and without warning flip upside down. And you know this because the Mayan calendar ended on that year, so this tells you that.

 

The bible doesn't say the world will end so I won't believe it. :/......
