    Jay Lavera

Jay drummed her fingers on the kitchen counter. Thump, thump, thump, thump, pause, thump, thump, thump, thump. And repeat. Her parents and older brother stood in the other room, speaking in low voices to that lawyer. Was she invited in to talk about her future with them? Was she even consulted on the matter? No.
She bit her lip, wishing the proceedings would hurry up so she could sign whatever contract they'd cooked up for her. She wanted to be the one to sign it. That is to say, Jay Lavera wanted to sign it. But if they took too long she didn't know who might pop up and make a mess of everything.
Jay had a special problem, which was the main reason for this arranged marrige nonsense. Namely, she wasn't the only one inside her body. There were others... just a few. They weren't bad people, persay. But they weren't Jay Lavera either. So her parents called in specialists, locked her up, and finally resorted to this: marrying her off.
She had stopped thumping her fingers rhythmicly on the counter by now and had started fidgiting with her cuticles, a habit her mother despised. They had stopped talking now and she could tell they were coming into the dining room. They would ask her to sign it and give herself to some other person. Would he be a freedom or another prison? And would he accpet her and her "friends"? She'd gotten the idea that they were being paired up because they both had mental issues. What would his be?
Her eyes darted upwards to meet her brother's; he was the one person in the family who wasn't afraid of her but he didn't like her either. Their parents relied on him to explain everything to her when they were too ashamed or scared to admit their plans.

"Are you ready, Jay?" he asked, obviously not very upset by the idea of getting his sister out of the house. "We want you to sign this contract. It's a marrige contract to a man we think will suit you. You'll have your own house with him and you can live happily like an adult." his tight lipped smile attempted to show excitment for her.
Jay continued to play with her cuticals, shredding them slowly in that habitual way she knew she needed to work on. For a moment she thought of refusing. But someone else was starting to think with her. Panic set in as she felt the eruption of another personality and all rebellion flew out the window.
"yes!" she blurted out, afraid of losing any chance she had of leaving this house and the fear within it.

    'Can't hold on much longer,
But I will never let go.
    I know it's a one-way track,
Tell me now how long this'll last...
I'm not gonna think this way,
Nor will I count on others.
Close my eyes and feel the burn...
Now I see what I've gotta do.
Open your heart and you will see...'

Jaden heard a small and frail voice from behind him.
It sounded like the girl had been crying, but he wasn't going to judge...
I mean... who could hardly blame her for crying.. this isn't the most normal of situations... he pondered as the writing of his actions and thoughts shifted from Third to First Person and then back again...

He turned around and gave her a smile, cause... of course he couldn't judge her-...Wow, she was pretty.
    This girl was Claire?
    His wife?

...Yikes.. he had not expected... well, he didn't really know what he had expected actually. But that didn't matter now.

"Yeah, I'm Jaden. It's cool to meet ya Claire." he chuckled.
"The house is... well, it's alright for a house isn't it?"
What else could he do but act... Well.. Normal?
So he did, Gee... I bet she is already expecting a freak.. he scratched his head. Maybe me being too casual is gonna scare her off.. he then sighed..
I guess I can't blame her if she hates me. But can't say I'm not use to it..

Claire gave him a small smile, though her heart sank; he knows there's something wrong with me; I wonder what they've told him already about me, about how crazy I am; I can see it in his eyes. Maybe he's just nervous, too, but... could he hate me already?

But then she stopped for a moment, trying to fight the urge to run up the stairs and cry on the bed again: she did just smile. Claire couldn't remember the last time she had actually, consciously smiled; it felt like the muscles in her face weren't even used to the action. But, nonetheless, they had only exchanged a few sentences and she'd smiled. Maybe it's his voice... she thought, now loosening her grip on the wall and trying to stand more comfortably. Or his casual attitude; he doesn't seem crazy at all... no, he seems... fine. Normal, even, compared to me. I wonder if this could actually work. I mean, if he can make me smile so easily, who knows what else could happen?

She cleared her throat, thinking quickly what to say to fill the awkward silence. "Yeah," she began uncertainly. "Well..." She paused again; she hadn't started a conversation or even cared to speak to someone in who knows how long. "I'm sure you want to... talk, right? I can make some tea, if you'd like." Claire motioned to the kitchen and the little table for two next to it. What that really the best idea? Maybe he doesn't want anything to do with me... which would be fine, but... She stopped her thoughts abruptly; there was no point criticizing herself... yet.

Carson sat in the car looking at his wrist, bored, Eager. He waited for it to be over.He looked up a small second to see they were close to their destination. He felt his muscles tighten. He didn't need anyone.
He didn't want anyone. He was sure his "Wife" felt the same.He started to wonder what life would be like living with his "Wife".He'd certainly never love her...Maybe.
He fell asleep to the hum of the car,and thinking useless thoughts. When he woke up they were at the front of the house. It was nice,He thought maybe he could all it home,He'd never felt At home anywhere. He stepped out into the bright sunlight. He saw two men approaching him.He grabbed as many bags as he could as a form of insult to them.He walked in the living room.Eww,Yellow.He looked at the woman now standing across from him,he held out his hand, not really expecting a hand shake.Even if he did find himself loving her he wouldn't be able to tell,He'd never felt love. Hello,I'm Carson. He waited quietly.

I saw him. I saw my now 'husband' enter the house and come into the living room. He looked... ok for someone I would never like - or try to like. He had light hair with icey cold blue eyes. He looked cold.. He was the exact opposite of Ben. Ben used to have dark brown hair with sweet brown eyes. He was never cold to anyone... but this man... this 'husband of mine just seemed so.. different... way to different for my liking...
"I'm Adriana," I said. "“I don’t know you and I don’t love you. I loved one person and you’re not him†I bit my lip. I hadn't of wanted it to come out like that. I fled from the room. I ran until I found the door that led to the balcony. I loved heights which is why I loved balconies- balconies and fire... I sat there on the balcony-wondering why Ben died in that fire and I didn't... Would it be so bad if I just jumped off this balcony right now... No one would miss me... and I would be with Ben...

I couldn't help myself, and to be completely honest, after I was finished crying in the closet, I felt the happiest I had felt in a long while. Rejuvenated, alive. I love feeling alive; hadn't felt the rush in a few years. But this was hardly impressive to my new husband, and zero-encouraging to myself. So I brought the back of my wrist to my eyes and wiped the hot tears away, sniffling once and fixing the hair I knew was ruined. The thick dark curls are bunched in a high pony tail today, which is always helpful when breakdowns occur; but the curls on the side are sticking to my cheeks now, and it makes me self-conscious. I ignore that, and pull myself up shakily.

I am ready to be as fierce and merciless as I intended to be when I first entered this house. I am ready to rip him to shreds—emotionally, and let him know that I am a strong, independent, black woman young woman and can handle anything that the bitch named life decides to toss at me. But I can't, and I don't, because as soon as I leave that closest, there is a note waiting for me and my defenses melt.

“With my selective mutism and natural shyness, I couldn't even nod at you, let alone talk. We're going to be together, whether we like it or not. So we should at least be on a friendly basis. The more comfortable I am the more I can bring myself to talk to someone. Or so the doctor says.. Anyway I'm sorry, Mrs. Straham.â€

Is he...trolling me? My eyebrows knit together, chin quivering and tears threatening to poor out again. He couldn't have possibly been so cruel. So instead, I stare back into his dead eyes and nod. So that's what he had. He wasn't crazy, just quiet. My eyes divert from his after a moment of awkward silence.

“Well...Alright then.†I say with authority, my fingertips curling around my hips.

I truly can't imagine saying, he's forgiven. Yet.

It was then that she felt her stomach flip and tie into the tightest knot it had ever been in. He was actually a little bit attractive. She still found him to be somewhat of a freak, but that red hair...and those dark violet pools of color. Her arms crossed over her stomach and she breathed out deep. But then something occurred to her. If this was the master bedroom...then...? Her softened expression was quick to become hard again, face flushing as she pushed the boy out of the way and darted from the room.

Quickly, she begin to scout as if her life depended on it. Doors swung open this way and that, the sound of flat-covered feet echoing throughout the house from top to bottom. She even managed to get to the attic and basement before completely going meltdown on him. All color drained as she squealed and flung the bedroom door open at her arrival.

“There's only...†She gasped, trying to catch her breath. Slender palms upon her knees as she leaned forward with a slight cough and a disgusted shudder. What kind of sicko scientists were these? She was a virgin! These were perverts, sick, near-pedophiliac perverts. It was then that the possibility of them having installed cameras came into play. “Oh, dear lord.†She felt like she'd faint, but quickly gathered herself with a stutter and another shudder.

“There's only—one bedroom.†Her voice was urgent, Cameron would have to take her seriously. Right? Right.

    Jaden looked at the girl.
There was something about the way she acted...
her uncertainty made her even cuter, but it couldn't have been very comfortable for her.

He felt a little nervous too... god.. she would probably end up hating him.

However... things couldn't stay like this.
They were both 'sick', but... he was sure he wasn't. No... he knew he wasn't, and he could tell she wasn't either... somehow.
She was just a cute girl like any other.
Regardless, they were both human. Yes...

"Talking would be good yeah. I guess... we should try to get to know each other.." he stated the obvious.
"I guess tea would be nice too." he forced himself to smile, and didn't find it that hard.

I guess... it's easy to smile around her.

Claire nodded at his short, easy sentences; yes, his smile seemed genuine, and yes, she wanted to try, but... she didn't trust him yet. In fact... she'd never trusted anyone in her life before, so... why should this be any different?

You're useless, she found herself saying in her head, the unintended, usual self-torture crushing down on her. It's true, little Claire; you can't do anything right, you never have. Look at him; he knows you're nuts. If you even go in that kitchen and try to play your happy family you'll do something wrong; you'll break a tea cup, you'll say something stupid, you'll just start weeping for no reason. Don't kid yourself; go upstairs and be alone. Stay there and be the piece of shit you are. I know it sucks, but... it's just like your father said: that's all you were meant to be in life.

Claire squinted, her face contorting in the effort to push back her typical thoughts. Oh, she wanted to do as she'd told herself, and she knew it all was true, but she couldn't. She had to fight it, to make it better, without all the doctors and the pills and the torture from her family. It was just her now... her and Jaden. She swallowed, and, against her own will, headed into the tiny kitchen.

"So," she started slowly, hoping she didn't sound like she was about to cry from her mental struggle. It was easy enough to find what she needed for the tea despite not knowing her way around the place. "You're... how old? Did your parents... do this to you, too?" She cleared her throat, wanting to try and sound interested.

Jaden could clearly see that she was struggling.
I wonder why... maybe she really doesn't like me... she must be forcing herself to go on? he questioned...

He had been thinking when she asked her questions.
    "Oh?!
    Um... yeah, well..."
he gathered himself and started to answer her. I'm nineteen years old and... yeah, basically. My parents think I'm a loon. Although, I'm not. I mean... sure I guess even crazy people would think they aren't.. but this is different..." he sighed.

"But yeah, my parents couldn't wait to be rid of me." he summed up. "It's alright though, I'll get by. I figure... you're in the same boat as I am. So we'll just have to help each other out." he walked into the kitchen, carefully so as not to scare her, and he held out a hand trying to seem friendly. "I know we're... well, put bluntly, married and everything now.
But... I don't expect it to work out just like that."
he snapped his fingers on his other hand to emphasize his point. "I do however think it would be nice if we could get along though and try to help each other." he smiled again.
"After all, we're going to be together for the future it seems. Whether we wanna or not... so yeah." then he realised that what he had said may have made it sound like he didn't want to. "I mean! I'm not saying I don't wanna! I was just being... you know... careful to cover all bases-... I'm gonna shut up now." he stammered and muttered all over himself.

Which was definitely weird for him. He never usually did anything like that.
Sure he could be a bumbling idiot at times, but even THAT was ridiculous... Way to go Jaden... You're meant to show her you aren't a loon... instead you just completely made yourself seem batshit crazy... he told himself in his own head.

He bit his lip during the long silence. When she started talking he scratched the back of his head.He was waiting for something like that to happen. He sighed,as she left the room. His sigh came of as a sort of sigh of relief. He walked to the couch. He was wondering whether he should bother talking to her or save his breathe.lying there aslong as he did,he got sleepy he quietly fell asleep, when he woke up he was still alone. His dream kinda scared him.He had never had a "Dream" He always had a nightmare or dark nothingness. Its not like it mattered,he didn't remember it anyway. He sighed inward and walked up the stairs. He had no Idea what to call this individual,he didn't want to use any form of "wife" cause it might offend her.Instead he did the stupidest thing possible and called her "Person?"He wandered around,Touring all the rooms. He finally came across her at/in/on the balcony. He didn't talk to her,but instead give her an inviting stare through the translucent windows."Its getting dark out" He called through the windows. He didn't know why he bothered. He walked to another room and turned on the TV.

Claire frowned, cocking her head to the side, a little confused; was he really as nervous as she was? So we have something in common, she thought, trying to seem hopeful. I mean... that's how things start, right; having things you can talk about? She put down the tea cup she was holding and reached out slowly, squeezing his outstretched hand. She let go a moment later, blushing.

"It is... uh, odd," she began, turning to face the stove and turn on the burner so he couldn't see her face. "The situation we're in, I mean. But, you seem to understand. It's nice to... have someone that gets it, if that makes sense." She wanted to keep her head down, to stay hidden from his gaze, but she wanted to see his reaction to her words. Claire turned her head slowly, the shorter layers of her hair falling away from her eyes so she could see him properly. Was that too much? she thought worriedly. I mean, he doesn't want to take care of me or make me happy or anything like that yet... it must have been too much, you stupid girl. He's so... nice, and you just blew it.

It took me awhile to get control of my emotions. I when I finally come to my senses I heard him say " Its getting dark out," I looked up and saw him him staring at me. It wasn't cold.. but I wasn't warm either. It was.. inviting I guess. As soon as he came he was gone. I saw he walk from the window and sighed. He was nice... He might look cold but maybe he wasn't that b- No... I wouldn't get my hopes up of someone understanding me... or being kind to me... with my luck it was just an act... I never did have the best of luck... I finally stood up and reentered the house. I walked into one of the rooms and saw him watching TV.
"Thank You," I said, still standing by the door.

He looked up at her.Hey there. The sound of the tv blared loud enough to almost cover up his words."He got hit on the head with a coconut!~" He heard the TV character say.Why am I watching this? He looked back at her."Whats your name?". He asked as causal as possible.

I was quiet for a moment, wondering how to answer him. I cleared my voice and said " I'm Adriana. Adriana Pyr. I.. I want to apologize for before. I-I just-" I stopped suddenly deciding not to mention Ben at all. It would cause me more pain then I already had and my new 'husband' probably wouldn't care- not that I would have either. Well maybe I would if I was the person I was before Ben died. Now nothing mattered. " Maybe I'm just crazy. Isn't that why we are together in the first place? I'm not sure what Pyromania has to do with me running out but-" I let out a deep sigh. " I don't have a great past,"

He watched her scurry about the house as a dark haired blur. Head quietly turning this way and that as she zoomed around him and around him. His parents picked this house with hers. But he was a bit more informed on it since his mother tended to relay gossip to him and friends since he'd been born.

Patiently his seemingly vacant stare followed her, in his head he was amused. She was so frantic that it was comically kiddy and it frazzled her once perfect hair. She looked..cute in this way. So when urgency entered her voice it didn't startle him for while she ran around, he'd already written his answer to her plea.

'One bed, but there's four couches. And that's just in the living room. I'll be fine with a blanket and a cushion.'

    What's my name?
It's not like this is a hard question.
    But, it's personal.
    Of course, we're married.
That's pretty close to as personal as it gets.

"Joshua. Last name Murder." Yep. That went well. Slip of the tongue. She had me thinking about murder. "Wait, no, it's Lase. Sorry." The chair she's sitting in is really different. She's really different. I pull my jacket tighter. It isn't cold out there. But it's so cold inside of me. Freezing. I hope she doesn't try and talk to me too much. I just need to lie down.

I have to stay polite. "Uh... what's your name?". She'll tell me, I'll leave, and I can stay under the covers for the next century. It's such a good idea, really. Little kids say it when they don't want to go to school. Even as you get older, your bed's a good place to be when things go wrong.

It still is. I don't think things can get any worse.

    I'm not crazy
    I'm just a little unwell
I know right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
    A different side of me

    "Time to wake up."

"What?" I grumbled as somebody's hand pushed my shoulder back and forth, trying to wake me up from my slumber. I turned my shoulder away because I was still sleepy but this person just wouldn't give up and was telling me that we had arrived. Time sure does fly by when you're sleeping I guess. Last thing I remember was feeling sleepy because of the anti-depressants and laying my head down for a rest. And then in what seemed like an instant, I was here at my new home where my "wife" awaited me. Part of me didn't want to leave the limo but a part of me also knew that this man wouldn't stop annoying me until I got out of the car and into that house. I guess there's nothing I can do. "Stop your yammering," I said as I brushed his hand aside and opened up my eyes.

Covering my eyes from the bright sunlight, I picked up my bags and walked towards my new home as the man who drove me here brought over the bags that I couldn't carry. That house wasn't too bad to be honest but that was only the exterior. Inside the house was my wife and I do not think she wants to meet me. Same thing goes for me but what can I do about it? Taking in a deep breath and exhaling, I turned the doorknob and entered my house and there she was. Her red eyes and white hair sure as hell weren't common but she appeared to be a normal girl simply listening to some music on her iPod, not an insane one like I had imagined. 'Well this is it,' I thought as I stared at her looking for anything out of the ordinary, anything hinting to her being insane, but I couldn't find anything. 'I better introduce myself.'

    "Hello, the name's Noah."

He thought,Ideas jumbled around in his head.If you want,You can tell me whatever it is thats bothering you...If not,I understand... He paused to think. Why does he suddenly care about this stranger? He'd never met her, why'd he care?Only that question he couldn't answer. That and what was wrong with Adriana.

I tapped my foot with the beat of the music. I was calm now. Calm.

    Calm.

Right. Calm. I would have to remember that. My . . .Ugh, I can't even think it! . . . partner was coming soon. Calm was what I needed. It's not exactly my forte, but this boy, the one I'm going to spend the rest of however long my life is with deserved it. My calmness, I mean. I couldn't make this unpleasant. No - I wouldn't make this unpleasant. I have to do this right. I would never forgive myself if I didn't.

I guess I should just shoot myself now then. I knew I was going to mess it up. Right when I felt the other presence in the room, that was it - I messed up.

I looked over to my right to see him standing there. Black hair. Eyes like mine. Pale like me. Thing was, he probably had more hair than me too.

I bit the inside of my cheek, forcing myself to stop tugging at my arm. Bad habit - I'm not crazy, and he doesn't look like it either. The thought brings a little smile to my face . . . inside my head at least, I don't really know at this point if I actually smiled or not.

    "Hello, the name's Noah."

    Noah.

    Noah.

Hello Noah. But I don't say it. I just stare at him, and then I open my mouth, "Kalista . . ." I say. And my face is entirely red - when I feel something, embarrassment in this moment's case, I really, really feel it. Now I wanna cry, but not in front of him. I press on.

"Kalista . . ." I tell him again, this time with a bit more feeling, "My name is Kalista." And I force a painful smile onto my face. I won't run.

I won't do it. They won't break me.

“I don’t know you and I don’t love you. I loved one person and you’re not him.”
Why? I should I tell him about Ben. No one ever cared before-they always pretended to care- mother, Karen, Jesse... But in the end no one really listened as i finished talking... No one cared or understood that it was my fault Ben was dead... But maybe... this man... this boy... maybe-even though he looked cold-maybe on the inside he was warm.. I shook my head "Maybe After you tell me your name," I mumbled
