    WHAT HAPPENS NOW?
BOY IS AWAKE. GATHER INFORMATION. HELP HIM?

The look that presented itself on Chester's face broke Kallisti's heart a little, and she continued to read what he had written. Though, despite his misfortunes, the boy was useful. He had been through more than one game. That meant . . . maybe they all had - but not all of them were . . . Oh. His memories and this repeating life of his were his punishment, for committing suicide.

"Yes, we have met a . . . version of Analynne, she meddled with Crestatia's game on more than one occassion." she replied to complement her partner's, "Devyn . . . What kind of person is she? You know she was after the players of this session. And she caught us, and then we were all separated. I'm fairly sure some of us are dead now, because of her." Kallisti looked at Temperance after she spoke and wondered if Bag Wo - . . . Devyn was doing this to them because she hated Crestatia, in some way. Perhaps she was a player from a previous session, too?

What did she keep him around for, though? Maybe she cared about him, or perhaps she planned to use him, somehow, against Crestatia. But if he was a broken player, what use could that be?

"Do you think that Devyn is like Crestatia? She seems to have powers beyond that of a player . . . Or access to resources that put her up to a mode that was and is quite dangerous to us . . ."

The 'true' gameboard being broken was a curious thing, and she wondered why that was, and who it was that had broken it in the first place. "The original gameboard . . . What do you know about it being broken?"

"Chester, you've been a lot of help." Kallisti looked over at the other girl, then back at Chester and gave him a genuine smile of thanks.

From the top of the stairs, he entered the cellar. It didn't take long to get a grip on the situation, and without wasting anytime, Theodore approached her. Tenderly, and a bit timid, a pale hand reached out to brush the tears away from the girl's eyes. He smiled softly; his dark green eyes still sharp and alert for any sign of danger.

It's alright. You'll be alright...But we have to go now, okay? Just walk with me. It won't hurt, I promise.

Without waiting for a reply, he laced his fingers with her's and pulled her forward. Step by step, they ascended the creaking staircase. The door slammed behind them.

    You shouldn't die here, Marina.

His voice was gentle, but just stern enough to mean a bit more than was presented. Once at the top, he turned to face her again and placed his hands on her shoulders, staring her in the eyes.

It isn't safe here, but the only way you're going to be able to go home is to confront the woman. Crestatia is watching. She'll kill you, if you don't prove yourself here and if you guys don't work together...You probably won't see me again, but your legs should be alright now... ...Marina, you took it, didn't you? My medicine? ...If you can ever make it back to Antilum, find another--similar vile. The liquid will be pale orange. It will smell like...Um...Chalk? Aha...I'm not sure how to describe it.

He smiled again and shook his head, breathing out gently before leaning forward to peck her forehead. He squeezed her hand, one last time.

You need to go now. I can't explain anymore. Please survive.

"And by 'clock', I mean only punching in the face. With your fist. None of this weapon stuff." he told Bernie, making sure the girl wouldn't kill him. At her offer of help, he shook his head, "No, just make sure you stay close to me."

Harley found a single-door entrance and jiggled at the knob; it clicked open, and he looked at his conscious companion. He put a finger to his lips, and then slowly opened the door, it leading into a small room that kind of looked like a storage room of some sort. It was dim, but there was one window for the light to shine through, so they weren't blind. Briefly, he considered leaving Madeline in this closet, so she could be secure and he wouldn't have to worry about her . . .

He sat the light girl down, and looked around the storage room. A cover, good. He grabbed it and bit his thumb, drawing blood.

"Don't panic. We haven't left you. Stay here, we're trying to get help. Harley."

He then ripped of a part of the large cover, and changed the makeshift bandage over her eye. Shit. It looked pretty bad. He hoped it didn't get infected. He looked at Bernie, and then shrugged. Hopefully, she would be okay here. He looked around for anything to lock the door with. The one they had come through, he locked, and the one they were about to go out had a lock on it too, but they couldn't do anything about that.

He adjusted the girl so that she was well-hidden behind a few sacks of . . . whatever, and then draped the cover over her head just so the note would be the first thing she saw.

After taking a breath, Harley quietly opened the door that went further into the building and they found themselves in a hallway. He closed the door behind him, and then began to lead Bernie down the hall, looking at the several other doors and keeping an ear out for trouble. They needed to find supplies.

I thought so. She's always around. Usually, in another form. It's normally either her, or Crestatia who show up as another pawn. Normally, that extra person is the key to 'breaking the gameboard'. and winning. You should use Analynne's power to help you, assuming you haven't already messed that up.

Once the extra is gone, it's just you against Crestatia.

It's not impossible to end the game early after that,
but it's about ten times less likely without Analynne's piece.

Devyn is controlling, manipulative, competitive, and powerful, to her enemies. She's angry, like me.
I have never met her before this game, but I think she may be a pawn, like you guys.

I believe she wanted to capture you to win Crestatia's favor.
She wouldn't be afraid of making a deal--or a lot of them, and probably has.
She probably wants all of you dead so she can win.

What I mean is why Crestatia has all of these games to begin with. It's because she needs more players, to fix what's been broken--in her world.

    ...Thanks.

If' I've been that great a help to you, pull the plug and leave, now, before she comes back and kills you.

"Theo don't go." She reached out for him desperately. In that moment she said two things she never said. She shortened his name and used a contraction. Her legs didn't hurt anymore and she felt weirdly at peace. He was warning her, but seeing him made her feel happy. She felt so weak and hopeless before he showed up. She didn't want to keep looking so pathetic, but tears seemed to be flowing much harder than when she was in physical pain. "Please stay with me. I've been trying to find that woman for more than a week." Her heart felt like it was being ripped out from inside her. She didn't want to say goodbye, not now. She wanted him to stay with her. "Thank you Theodore." She managed to choke out. Margin swallowed back a silent sobs. "I hope you find your sister. If i make it through this, I'll bring you back. I promise."

    WHAT HAPPENS NOW?
    ENOUGH TALK, TIME TO GO.

There it was again, the request to pull the plug. Kallisti looked solemnly at Chester, "Thank you, for everything." she told him, "I am . . . sorry it has to be this way for you." She looked over at Temperance, gave her a nod, then walked behind the bed and took a long, deep breath, "Goodbye, Chester." She pulled out the plug, and then, without waiting to see what would happen, she kept the smaller items with her, dropped the larger ones, and ran out of the room with her partner.

Neither of them stopped to wait and see what would happen now, but they ran down two flights of stairs, through the lobby, and down the entrance hall, jumping into the room with the broken window, and then she let Temperance go first, before following.

". . . Where is the car?!" Kallisti questioned breathlessly, looking around, and then her eyes darted to the ground, noticing tire tracks leading away from them. "Don't tell me that they took off without us!" She was furious - that was just like Harley, that *******! And Madeline . . . Augh.

"We need to get away from here," she said, gripping the gun in her anger and walking, "And . . . I am glad we're both still alive . . ." And then she began to quickly follow the tire tracks until they spun onto the road she remembered seeing when they first started out. "What now?" she asked.

Temperance gave Chester a kiss goodbye before quin pulled the plug and grabbed the note with everything he had written on it. She pocketed it, made sure the sheets were still tightly around her waist, shoved anything small she could into her pockets, and then was dragged through the halls of the hospital until they were outside. When they stepped outside she was almost as pissed off as quick was, until she saw all the broken glass. "Quintus, i think they were attacked." She said flatly. She pointed at the shards of broken glass near the tire tracks. She was tired, but willed her feet to move forward. "Lets just start walking." Her mind was reeling, too distracted by the events that just transpired to think about much. "Maybe they didn't get far." She kept stepping forward--one foot after another. "If you tell anyone how nice i was back there,I'll cut your throat." Temperance's voice was hollowand emotionless. She didn't look over at quin once while they walked.

Marina smelled fire and automatically ran back to the door that slammed shut behind her when she left the stairs with theodore. It wouldn't open. She climbed back up in a hurry. The room was dusty and could easily catch fire as well. She hurried out of the room and down the hall, searching for a way out of the building.

Bernie helped Harley hide Madeline. Once she was all good, they set off. A few minutes later, she sniffed something very distinct. "Do you smell fire?"

Duncan sat on the steps of the hospital. He rolled a roll of roll of Scotch tape between his hands and ceased his quiet sniffling. Standing up he pocketed the tape before heading back on the road. Anger in his step and a frown in his face. He was left behind.

"Do you smell fire?" Bernie asked, and the two of them stopped with Harley sniffing at the air. The scent wasn't very strong, but there was an upstarting fire. The two of them stood in a large hall, and Harley contemplated what to do.

"It's not a good idea to stay here," he told her, and then grabbed her wrist, bringing her back towards the way they came. He wished he had some sort of weapon besides his fists so that he didn't feel so goddamned helpless. They hurried back towards the storage room.

    - - -

"Quintus, I think they were attacked." Kallisti sighed. "If you tell anyone how nice I was back there, I'll cut your throat."

"Yes ma'am." she replied sarcastically, and then the bloodied note in her back pocket felt as if it weighed a ton.

The two girls walked down the asphalt road in silence, and she mulled over everything that had happened in that hospital room. Chester was dead now. Kallisti wanted to cry about it, a little, but she was more interested in talking to Crestatia now, and asking her things. She wondered how the others were doing, if they really were attacked.

    Hopefully, still alive.

Eventually, they came upon a large unfamiliar building. Ugh. Maybe she was full of abandoned building experiences . . . But what if the others were in there? The car tracks seemed to go straight past this building, but. "What do you think?" she asked Temperance.

Theodore's voice played over and over in her head as she hurried through the halls of the building. Relief washed over her as each step was pain free. The aching in her chest had yet to subside and she still felt horribly sick, but at least her legs did not hurt. That made things better. Smoke wafted through the cracks and she was pretty sure she could feel the floor getting warmer. Marina stopped to cough, still clutching the gun tightly. She needed to find that woman. This needed to end. She was right back where she started almost a week and a half ago. She was searching for a treasure without a map. Oh Theodore, I wish you had said where she was. Even a hint would have been nice. More tears leaked out of her eyes as she thought of how sweet and kind he had been.

She was going to miss him dearly, but she would not let him stay dead. There was no way she could let him disappear after saving her. She still did not understand how it was even possible. He had clearly already been dead before he showed up to help her. It made zero sense, but nothing about this game really made sense. "Thank you Crestatia," was all she could say on the matter. The game master had let her live for whatever reason. There was no doubt that the others that were still in the cellar had not been as fortunate. Guilt radiated through her at the very thought of it.
There was so much for her to do and right now, she had to do it alone. He said teamwork would be necessary, but she had no team to work with. She needed to find the bag lady. Every ounce of her being hoped that she was here somewhere. Running around aimlessly was not helping solve any problems. She could sense the danger she was in. She had no idea where she was or what sort of dark secrets this building housed, but she needed to get out. Marina inhaled slowly and exhaled her worries, fears, and frustrations. She needed to be as level headed as possible. There was a whole list of things to accomplish and little time to do so. She just wished that she did not have to be alone. It would be less scary that way. Please survive. Her lips turned up into a smile. "I am not alone, am I Theo?"
    "You'll always be alone."
The voice startled her. Marina whipped around searching for the sound, but saw nothing. Where did that come from? Anxiety picked up inside her and she felt every muscle in her body twist and turn into knots. "Is someone there?" There was no answer. She took a shaky breath, wiped away the remaining tears on her face, and turned down the next available hall.

"It's not a good idea to stay here," Harley told her, and then grabbed her wrist, bringing her back towards the way they came. She wriggled her wrist out of his grasp so that she could just hold his hand. It was easier than having him yank on her. They hurried back towards the storage room as quickly as possible. Would Madeline even still be alive? She hoped so. It would have really sucked to drag the poor girl around everywhere, only to have her wind up dead. It was a nuisance, but Bernie was glad that Harley hadn't wanted to just abandon the strawberry blond. She wasn't sure if she had it in her heart to just dump her like garbage.

When they reached the storage area, she quickly began shuffling stuff around so that they could get Madeline up and out of there. Her body ached desperately. Bernadette would give nearly anything to just curl up and pass out for the next week after all the excitement they've been having. Just thinking about it was overwhelming. So overwhelming that-- "Harley, have yuu noticed da air?" She hadn't realized during the panic with the river and the carjacking, but she had stopped wheezing. It was no longer hard to breath and everything seemed so normal outside considering the circumstances. She stayed focused on the task at hand, but had paused for just a moment when she spoke. She returned to uncovering the beaten down girl and pulled the tarp off her bloody battered body. "Time zu go," she told her.

Temperance was so sick of walking when they finally came to some unfamiliar building, but then again, everything here was unfamiliar. She wasn't from Brookridge. Hell, she wasn't even sure they were still in Brookridge. Wouldn't that be funny? When they lowered their pace and eventually came to a complete stop in front of it, she just narrowed her eyes at the door. She was so sick of walking into strange buildings. Her body couldn't take anymore stress. It was all just rather annoying, for lack of a better word. "What do you think?" Quin finally asked her.

Temperance checked the supplies she had on hand before sighing. "I think," she began, "that once you enter a horror flick, there really is no escape." Reluctantly, she trudged forward. The building was rather large and vaguely reminded her of the hospital they had just visited. "Let's get this over with." Her hand gripped the handle and pushed the door open. I'm about damn ready to give Crestatia a piece of my mind.

Duncan marched on, and on, and on. He knew it had to be from fatigue but this road seemed to go on forever. His mind kept wandering over the kids who deserted him and missing his home, he didn't even know why some crazy lady had him kidnapped anyway. It made him want to heave just thinking about it, had he harmed her in some way? Could it be that she was a victim of something his father had done? Duncan scratched the top of his dark cap and kept moving, the thoughts were a nice distraction from the slight ache in his feet.

Minutes went by, how many, Duncan didn't know but that was alright, because gloriously, finally, he alighted open another building. This one looked deserted too, but at least it would provide some kind of shelter from this Vashinton weather. He could take a break, maybe see if it had some kind of water supply. He rounded a corner copse of trees and was able to see the front of the building, a pair of dark haired girls were pulling the door open, but he was so far he didn't know if his voice could carry. And they were out in the woods like he was, were they stranded and lost? Or were they a group of psychos, just waiting on some tender Duncan flesh to carve into.

With his own safety in mind, he shifted his course into the trees surrounding the shifty building. He peered behind the bark of the towering tree and watched the two girls, no way, nu uh, they weren't getting any of this tender Duncan flesh. So he'd rest, he'd hide, and he'd wait. For now.

Halfway through the run, Bernie decided she wanted to hold his hand instead, so he complied while they reached the storage room. Before they closed the door behind them, Harley could have sworn that he heard a female's voice.

"Harley, have yuu noticed da air?" Harley snapped out of his thoughts as the cover tarp was removed to reveal a still-alive Madeline. When he opened the door to the outside, he took a sniff at it. Clean. No radiation. Had the radioactive air only been in Coy City and Brookridge? . . . Were they even in Brookridge anymore?

". . . Clean." he said, grabbing Madeline and swooping her over his shoulder, wincing at the pain it caused, "C'mon."

The two of them walked out the door and into the day, and walked farther away from the building until they turned around. Harley immediately spotted two figures off in the distance and he was ready to start running, until he saw they weren't in cloaks and the both of them had dark hair.

"It's Kallisti and Temperance." he told Bernie, and began to start walking, feeling some relief.

"I think that once you enter a horror flick, there really is no escape."

Kallisti couldn't help but laugh a little, and then follow Temperance toward the building. Before they reached it, Kallisti saw two figures from the corner of her eye and spun around, pointing her gun and getting ready to shoot. With a surprised look on her face, she tapped Temperance on the shoulder, "It is Harley and Bernadette," she told her, and then began walking up to the others.

When she got closer, she frowned in slight horror at Madeline being draped over Harley's damaged shoulder, "She's not . . ." She couldn't bring herself to complete the sentence.

"No, just unconscious." he replied, patting the girl's butt, "We were kidnapped by these three assholes in cloaks. Bastards tried to drive us off a bridge. Tommy didn't make it."

Of course he didn't make it. Kallisti rolled her eyes, though she did feel sort of bad. She looked over at Temperance, resigning to the fact that she was right about them being kidnapped. She sighed, "We were just going inside." she told them.

Harley gave a cautious look to Bernadette, "We think there's a fire in there." he told her, "But only in that specific sector." And he pointed to another section of the building.

"Well, we are going in this way."

"Let's get this over with." Temperance said, and then pushed open the door. the group of five walked inside and found themselves in a hall that was reminiscent of the one from the abandoned hospital. Kallisti wondered if Chester really was dead or not. They walked down the hall and searched a few rooms that were sat on either side of them, looking for supplies or help that wouldn't result in their deaths.

They had all finally regrouped. They were only short two people. That guy that was with Quin and Temperance in the beginning, and Thomas from the other group. Hopefully they would have more clues as to the whereabouts of the others inside this building. As much as no one wanted to be here, it was probably here for a reason, which sucked. It sucked a whole lot.

Temperance reached inside her pocket to pull out everything that Chester had wrote to them. She stared down at the last bit. He had something else to say. Why didn't he say that before they pulled the plug. He wanted them to do it so bad. It wasn't like they did it spur of the moment or something. She ground her teeth in frustration as they walked. "Was ist das?" She looked up to see German girl staring at the paper in her macheteless hand.
"We met someone in the hospital. We think he might have been a previous pawn turned player or something. His name was Chester. These were his answers to our questions."
Temperance had held the paper out for her to look at. Bernadette took it and her blue eyes began to roam over the scrawled words as they walked. The hall curved to the left and they all continued down it. Bernie wished she had held onto the tire iron. It seemed as if Temperance and Quin were the only ones that had weapons. "Did yuu git supplies?" She glanced up at the pair, noticing the sheet tied around Temperance's waist.
"Oh, right, yeah. We had more, but we left in a hurry because we didn't know if something would happen. Set her down so we can try and take better care of her."
Bernie pulled on Harley and helped set Madeline down in the hall. She watched as Temperance unwound the sheet from her stomach and began to rip it up and peel off Madeline's old dirty bandages.

Marina turned down the next hall with the gun extended outwards. She had both hands wrapped tightly around the handle and her arms fully extended. The smoke seemed to disappear as she moved further through the building. With one hand on the gun, she opened a door at the end of the hall. What could have started that fire? She wanted to believe the others would be okay--that they found somewhere safe or made it out of the cellar. Blood pounded in her ears and she took a deep breath. The door seemed to connect to a different part of the building. This place was huge. She did her best not to let it overwhelm her. Every so often she would see shadows and figures. When confronted, there was nothing there. You are losing it Marina. You are truly and utterly losing it. The room opened up into another hallway with a second set of doors. She stood between the two pairs for a moment, not knowing what would be in the next section of the building.

Please let there be a way out, or the Bag Woman. Either one of them will do. She pushed the door open and entered the new hallway. There were rows of doors on each side and the hall seemed to come to a T at the end. She stood there with the gun ready debating where to go next.

Harley had taken the gun from Kallisti since he was better with it than she was and stood by while Temperance patched up Madeline and Kallisti gave her some painkillers, helping her swallow them. It felt like they were all that was left.

He wondered about Marina, about Vanille . . . Were either of them still alive? They'd no doubt been put through trials like Harley's group . . . Kallisti and Temperance seemed pretty unharmed - they'd gone through no trials? He wondered why.

The 'Chester' person that Temperance mentioned . . . Harley tried remembering all of the names on the email; he didn't remember seeing a Chester, or anything similar to that name. A previous player, huh . . . "d'You find anything out about the baglady?" he asked.

Kallisti took a breath, and then nodded, "She was taking care of the boy named Chester . . . Apparently, she wanted us captured so that she could . . . impress Crestatia, which leads us to believe that she may be some sort of player as well. Oh, yes . . . Her real name is Devyn."

Before she could continue, Harley heard footsteps and then saw a figure turn down the hall they were breaking in. He pointed the gun and stepped to be in front of everyone, limping forward. He continued to prowl forward when he saw that he recognized the face, ". . . Marina?" he asked, feeling a wave of emotion and relief sweep over him, "How did you . . . How long have you been here? Are you alright? Where are the others?"

Marina could hear voices, but she was starting to believe they were all in her head. They sounded familiar and seemed to be around the corner, but she could not believe they were really there. The voices seemed to be growing louder until--". . . Marina?" She knew that voice well. Marina looked up to see the face of Harley Jackson just a few feet away. He had his gun pointed at her, and she shim. Her blue eyes widened and she had to blink a few times to make sure it was really him. Even after he spoke again, she could not believe her eyes. "How did you . . . How long have you been here? Are you alright? Where are the others?"

"Harley?" she finally choked out after staring idly at him for a minute or two. Her hands started trembling and she almost dropped the gun. "Is... is that really you?" Her hands dropped to her sides and a new wave of tears began to break through. It felt like a weight was lifted off her shoulders. Relief flooded through her and Marina ran forward. She did not stop running until she had thrown herself into his arms. Marina wrapped herself around him and buried her face into his chest. He was hurt. "Harley," she murmured into his chest. "You're alive." She breathed, pulling her face away to look up at him. "Are you okay? You look like hell. What happened to all of you?" She glanced over at the others. "There is a fire in the cellar. We need to get out of here. We can talk later."

She brought her bright blue-eyed gaze back to Harley and looked at him urgently. "We need to go before it spreads." Marina pawed at his damp collar, pulling his face closer to hers and giving him a kiss before stepping away. "Let me help," she said as Bernadette began to move Madeline. All she could think about was getting free of this building. Guilt was still nestled in her core over the fact that there were people being left behind, but there was nothing left that she could do for them. It was terrible knowing that. Physically she felt better, but emotionally she was a wreck.
