Vanille volunteered for the summoning and Theodore smiled. So cute. What made the little ethnic girl think she was suitable for summoning Crestatia? She was a baby, and she definitely didn't look like a person with a strong sense of spirituality. She was definitely intelligent, no doubt about that, but...

Theodore, I can see you stealing glances at me. If you wish to speak, do so.

    Whoa there.

He decided not to say anything on that, instead turning his head away and staring towards to door of the conference room. This was not the place nor the time to have a discussion with Marina about her distance. But apparently being considerate warranted being snapped at. Eek. Maybe she was on her period.

I will do it as well. Vanille, you said that the last time everyone was here, Mister Jackson summoned Analynne just by saying her name in front of the vessel girl, correct? Clearly that is not the case for Crestatia since she appears to just occupy whomever she wishes, whenever she wishes. Anthony filled me in on quite a bit of the occurrings that took place before he passed...Whatever happened to that girl?

Theodore didn't know what girl they were talking about.

John rolled his eyes and honestly wondered why he bothered. He loosened his grip on the red beads on his wrist and watched the two volunteers. Normally he would have analyzed both girls but he could see that now was not the time for that, his voice was frosty and his eyes harsh when Anthony and Eleanora were mentioned at the same time.

"Her name is Eleanora. And she is dead."

Kallisti stilled up beside him when John announced that Eleanora was dead. The girl that had supposedly been the vessel of Analynne, who Harley summoned from her by accident. She was dead now. Huh. That sucked.

He looked at his cousins. She had become . . . a lot of things, recently, but heartless was not one of them - or so he'd like to think. She hadn't even wanted to come, but he dragged her along despite her protests.

Others were talking, but Harley focused on Vanille; could she pull of a summoning? He was afraid not, she was such a kid sometimes, and what if Crestatia killed her? He tried not to care, but the damn kid had been hanging around him so much recently that he was growing to. Ugh. Feelings. He was becoming the more empathetic of he and Kallisti, and it was a little scary.

" I don't like this. " she said next to him in a low tone. " Why did you have to make me come? " she said digging her nails into his thigh under the table. He didn't blink an eye. She was heavily watching Madeline, Thomas, and John. She was growing to resent the three of them lately, but Harley didn't care.

" You're here now, might as well not complain. "

" That's easy for you to tell me. " she snapped quietly.

He sighed again. " Well, " he called out, " Are we going to get a move on, now? "

"Whore. I suggest you watch what you say. And that's all I even have to say to you. Besides, when the Huntress killed that girl, did the demoness not come out? I don't remember you giving her a damn candle and seeing her accept it now did I?"

Anger flared up inside of her like the red hot sun. How dare he! She had the mind to crawl over the table and punch him in the face. She wasn't afraid to fight a man, let alone a hypocritical emo jerk who...Um. ...She turned her head to stop herself from smiling. She was being silly. Aah, she didn't know very much about this kid, huh? But he was clearly hung up over whoever this Eleanora girl was.

Thomas had stood to defend her, but was shut down instantly. Cute. When she finally found the mind to retaliate, Theodore basically told them to shut up and the conversation continued.

"So, what, two people are summoning? Or...?"

Vanille reached under her dressed and grabbed her Swiss knife, flicking it open with ease, and really almost tempted to log it into the table, just for the cool effect! . . . Theo probably wouldn't have liked that much.

Marina said she was going to summon, too, but the question was . . . how did they do it? Maybe if she drew blood from her hand . . . Well, that was what she had intended to do.

If no one has any ideas on how to summon, I'm just gonna cut myself and draw blood, then chant some pretty words, and we'll see what happens!

It seemed a little . . . crazy, but she didn't know what else to do! It's not like she was a pro at summoning demons or anything . . . She looked over at Harley and Quin. Quin was looking pretty upset, but over something else, and Harley was looking at her with concern. She just smiled at him.

    Well?

"Her name is Eleanora. And she is dead."

John seemed rather upset by this. Marina directed her attention to him and sighed softly. "My apologies. I meant not to offend." She nodded her head slightly in an apologetic manner before glancing around at everyone else.

"Well," Harley called out, "Are we going to get a move on, now?"

❝If no one has any ideas on how to summon, I'm just gonna cut myself and draw blood, then chant some pretty words, and we'll see what happens!❞ Vanille offered. That sounded like a bad idea. ❝Well?❞

Marina glanced over at him. She had seen him passing in the halls of the school, but had little conversation with Harley since he left her family's home. It was disappointing, but probably her own fault. Alienating herself was not going to help anyone, but it was what she needed for the time being. "Vanille, that sounds like a terrible idea. It probably seems silly to everyone else, but I brought my things with. I just need to fetch my purse from whomever took my things when we entered."

It was all probably going to be a waste to collect, but she had never summoned a demon before. Some familiarity would be helpful. "We need to be very precise in whatever we say to Crestatia, and we still have not decided what we want to say to her--what we will trade or ask for. If we are making a deal, we need to know what the deal will be first. So yes, Mister Jackson, we will get it moving, as soon as we decide what we are moving." She sighed. Marina was growing tired of all of them. Something still felt missing in her. That absence seemed to make her more hostile and cynical with everyone, rather than just women.

Madeline's heated gaze turned to the energetic girl. She took a calming inhale. The girl sounded young, so going full on ***** mode would be...mean. Besides, she didn't want to risk getting kicked out by Theodore.

"...Are we just going to completely ignore what I just said? I mean, granted, I'm not the goddess of summoning or anything like that, but I would think we would at least like to attempt the least violent method of summoning first. Unless you want to cut your hand open, and you're into that."

She couldn't help it. The agitation and sarcasm was thick in her voice. She hated being ignored. She hated it. Hated it, hated it, hated it. She'd have to remember to dislike this mask girl, or at least note her incompetent.

"Vanille, that sounds like a terrible idea. It probably seems silly to everyone else, but I brought my things with. I just need to fetch my purse from whomever took my things when we entered. She sighed, plopping her face down into her arms.

Kallisti ignored Harley, she ignored Vanille, John, Theodore, Marina, Thomas, and most of all, she ignored Madeline. Why the hell was she even here? To summon a demon? She had planned that just days ago, except it had fallen through when she fell ill due to the weather and some sort of nausea.
Vanille had ignored the 'no blood sacrifices' from Madeline. What could they offer Crestatia? A life? Monetary items? Good god, these people . . . She rolled her eyes and stood from her chair, moving to one of the windows and staring out of it. What could a demon possibly want? There were few answers to that question.
She didn't want to be here, not in the slightest. Goddamn that Harley . . . She loathed him for this, and loathed Thomas for being alive, and loathed Madeline for being here . . . She despised everyone. It was tempting to bring her bow - she could have killed someone and maybe then, and only then Crestatia would have come.
    But no blood sacrifices.
She looked over her shoulders at the others trying to think of what to give, and then her hand went to her necklace. Extremely expensive, it had appeared on her desk in her dorm around Christmas, and she had no idea who it was from. It was extremely beautiful, though.
She sighed and calmed herself down. This was not a place to be letting herself be riled up - or at least . . . not a place to show her riled nature. What were they to do? What were they go give? She was annoyed that, despite the things that had happened over the last weeks, she gathered no information.
    Pathetic.

Things were progressing a little bit, but now they were stumped on what to ask for--which was ridiculous. Theodore had originally not wanted to be the one to pick what to ask for, but if no one else had a suggestion, there was something he thought would be a perfect test. He cleared his throat and drummed his fingers against the table for a moment, compiling his words.

I think, maybe, we should start small by trying to make a deal to change one rule...One of the bigger ones,

He took a moment to really think about it. What was the most obnoxious rule he could remember? ...Ah, there it was.

I think we should try to scrap the no romance rule. From there we can move onto bigger things, but...

Oh, the sudden sexual tension in here was suffocating, but everything was quiet. Theodore slouched in his chair and shrugged. At least he was trying.

Upon Theodore's suggestion, Kallisti turned around and looked at him, then to Harley, then finally to Madeline.
Changing the rules? It had never crossed her mind. Would it be something that Crestatia would agree to? It seemed something rather . . . large to be ordering. What would she want in exchange? One of their lives? Kallisti couldn't trail from that. Someone was going to die tonight, she felt it.
The tension in the room was insane and her dress was starting to feel a little too warm . . . Changing the rule of no romance . . . She liked that thought, and for selfish reasons. Hah. It would definitely give her an incentive for - . . . for something. She placed a hand on her own bare shoulder, her arm crossing her chest. Bargaining to change a rule . . . Why wouldn't it would? It certainly wouldn't hurt to try.
There was that question again . . . " What exactly do you think Crestatia would want in exchanged for something so . . . major? " she asked the rest and then moved back to the conference table, " Madeline says no blood sacrifices, but would she really want something of material value? " She motioned to her no-doubt-expensive necklace, " Or would she want one of us? Haha, I doubt that this would just be let deal-free . . . "

"I put my vote with the dark haired guy. Scrap the no romance as a test and since no blood is a valid reason. We should listen to Maddy and put up something like John's rosary. And since he clearly won't let that go, and I don't have my first camera or any pictures with me...who has something of sentimental value on them? Or at least something that's hard to part with. " Thomas stared at Theodore when he finished, this was his home, he would be most likely to be able to produce nearly everything needed.

Marina disregarded the others. They were getting nowhere again. That was, until Theodore finally responded. ❝I think, maybe, we should start small by trying to make a deal to change one rule...One of the bigger ones.❞ That was an interesting idea. At least it gave them a direction to go in.

"And which rule, pray tell, do you think we should change?" she asked him curiously.

❝I think we should try to scrap the no romance rule. From there we can move onto bigger things, but...❞

Marina almost laughed. Her hand flew to her mouth the cover the quiet scoff. Everyone seemed so hung up on this rule. How many had it killed? Pathetic. However, it seemed to be the only rule consistently broken. It might be helpful to those that were alive this time around, that died the first time. Her hand fell to her side, holding the back of the chair to steady herself. "That is an interesting idea Theodore." She wondered why he would choose that one. Was he interested in someone? Her eyes quickly ran across the faces in the room. It had to be someone that was not present, maybe even someone outside of the game. "Now, we just need to decide what to offer her. Equivalent exchange is key. If we wish to remove one of the more major rules, then we need to offer something just as good. I do not believe Crestatia will be swayed with our money and jewels, so you may all quit covering your things."

Marina paused for a moment, thinking on what they could offer the demoness. Kallisti asked what they could trade for. Offering a death did not seem wise and Thomas was tossing out the idea of materialistic things. How senseless. "What if we traded rules? We ask her to remove the no romance in exchange for a new rule?" She rested both of her hands on the back of the chair now, eying each member of the room, waiting for a response. Now, it was a matter of what kind of rule would they allow Crestatia to make. What could they decide to be their new rule.

I think we should try to scrap the no romance rule. From there we can move onto bigger things, but...

How was that NOT a big rule?! Madeline felt her heart beating quickly. This was bad. She didn't like this, but voicing that hesitancy would make things worse. She lifted her eyes, grazing them over Thomas and Quin and...John. Then she nibbled quietly at her bottom lip for a moment. Somehow, it felt like the no romance rule was ... actually helping. No one had to really think about their feelings in a decisive way, because you couldn't act on them anyhow. Removing that limit...

" What exactly do you think Crestatia would want in exchanged for something so . . . major? . . .Madeline says no blood sacrifices, but would she really want something of material value? . . .Or would she want one of us? Haha, I doubt that this would just be let deal-free . . . "

It was the first time she had heard the girl's voice in a long while. Madeline kept her face buried in her arms and tried to remain calm and steady.

Or at least something that's hard to part with."

    She was thinking about answering when;

"Now, we just need to decide what to offer her. Equivalent exchange is key. If we wish to remove one of the more major rules, then we need to offer something just as good. I do not believe Crestatia will be swayed with our money and jewels, so you may all quit covering your things. What if we traded rules? We ask her to remove the no romance in exchange for a new rule?"

A new rule? It was clever, but...Finally, she lifted her head.

"What exactly makes you think Crestatia will want us deciding what she'll trade in return? I mean, she clearly has the upper hand here...Why would we tell her what we want, instead of the other way around? Sounds like a death wish...Would it not be best to tell her what we'd like and ask what she would like in return?"

Temperance turned off the shower water and stood in the tub, dripping wet. Her skin was red from all the scrubbing. She could never get it to come clean. Every time she stepped into the shower, her body was covered in blood. It wouldn't go away no matter how hard she tried. She could always see it there. Every time.

When she stepped out into the bathroom air, she shivered. Temperance dried herself off and wrapped a towel around her thinning body. She hadn't eaten properly in weeks. Her bones were beginning to show, she had lost nearly twenty pounds, dark circles were under her eyes, she always felt exhausted, and the doctor thought she was undergoing PTSD. It seemed accurate, but for reasons other than what they believed. The doctor thought she was depressed from the miscarriage, not the fact that she had killed her father after years of sexual abuse. They questioned her on the bumps and bruises that occurred on her body, and used falling down the stairs as an excuse--it was a partial truth.

When she walked out into the dorm room, she was pleased to find it empty. Madeline had gone to that richy bitchy party. She would have some time to herself, but that wasn't necessarily a good thing. Temperance sat down on her bed, still in her towel and pulled out a baggy from under her pillow. She opened it up and inhaled the smell of the contents, smiling. Her fingers picked inside and pulled out the sticky green contents, crumpling them as it fell into the glass pipe in her hand. It was hard to smoke here with Madeline in the room. When it was full, she carried it over to the window and cracked it open. Temperance pulled a chair up and flicked the lighter over the pipe and inhaled deeply.

It wasn't the same as the tablet, but it helped a little. The anti-depressants were whatever. She took them, but wasn't sure they really made a difference. It was easier to just be alone. Everything seemed to mundane. She got up, went to classes, came back to the room, and locked herself away. She was less prone to reveal anything to Cherno that way. She never did tell him what happened that night, even with all his poking and prodding. Temperance exhaled--the smoking blowing out the window in a billowing cloud. Her mind felt numbing and tingly, which was a good sign. She suspected that Madeline noticed her knew behavior, but didn't care. Madeline could come with whatever wild ideas she wanted. None of them would be right and she wouldn't own up to it anyway.

Temperance knocked the ash out into her palm and ran her hands under the sink before heading back to the dresser to change. She wasn't really sure what to do now. Her stomach growled, but she ignored it. Eating seemed so pointless these days. Her hand raised to her mouth as she yawned. She wasn't sure whether or not she wanted to wait for her roommate to return from the party. If she returned from the party. It would be interesting to hear what she missed, but it would also mean having to talk to Madeline. She decided to lie back on the bed for now and pulled out her phone. She opened Pandora and listened to music while she played a game. She wasn't seeing anyone in person lately, but maybe it would be a good idea to text Cherno so that he wasn't freaking out about her randomly dying. She still didn't understand why he was becoming so involved. He didn't seem interested, not that he could show it anyway.

A new rule, huh? Everyone seemed to be wanting to get rid of 'no romance'. Haha. He guessed he could see why, when he looked from person to person. What kind of rule could they trade?

Hmm . . . No lying? Hah. That'd make the game completely impossible. Goddamn, it was hard to come up with a rule that would effect their every day lives. He couldn't think of anything and it was frustrating. Maybe it was a bad idea, then. Would trading no romance for no bargains be worth it? He seriously doubted it.

His eyes trailed over everyone else's faces. What did they think?

Say they did offer the exchange up. Who was to say the demoness would really take it? And if she did, what then? He doubted she'd let them telling her what they wanted fly - and Madeline voiced his thoughts. She was right. They were just humans, and if Crestatia wanted, she could kill all of them and have a game winner right then and there.

They would have to convince her that she wanted something, make her think that what they had in return was good enough for her acceptance. Whatever it was, they had to talk it up like never before. Or, they could just offer, and let her have her merry way. He figured half of them were going to die tonight. To trade no romance for something else was something . . . All of these rules humored Crestatia, that's why they were their in the first place.

" If Crestatia gets to choose what she wants, I think it'll result in some of our lives. " he replied, loosening his necktie and shirking off his jacket, " So, should we get on up to offering this thing, or are we just gonna sit her and speculate all night? "

Sounds like a death wish...Would it not be best to tell her what we'd like and ask what she would like in return?"

Marina turned her attention to Madeline. The girl had been nothing but negative the entire time. She was getting them nowhere every time she opened her mouth. She rolled her eyes and sighed in exasperation. "Would you rather leave it to chance then? Let Crestatia choose what we give up? If we could agree on something to give up that will somehow affect our lives, then we could find some way to work around that. However, if you seem to find it pointless, then so be it." She shrugged and turned away from the table, staring out the window behind her. "She is probably listening to us as we speak. She is the game master, after all. There is no doubt that the demoness is probably hearing everything--watching everything. So let us just get to it then. She would have no use for our materialistic things, for they do not exist." Marina chuckled lightly at the fact. She had always been so proud of her family's money.

"If Crestatia gets to choose what she wants, I think it'll result in some of our lives." Harley replied, loosening his necktie and shirking off his jacket, "So, should we get on up to offering this thing, or are we just gonna sit her and speculate all night?"

Marina turned back around and faced Vanille. "Duly noted Mister Jackson. I have already felt what it is like to no longer exist once, and honestly, I am not afraid of it. It is a terrible terrible feeling to be ripped of your very essence, but we have to give up something. Although, I am hoping my offer will be sacrifice enough to not require my second death." She repositioned the chair in front of the table so that she could climb on top. There was no way she would sit on the filthy ground and there was more room for Vanille and herself if they sat on the table. Marina slipped her feet out of the heels and left them on the floor, as she sat down on the table. She patted the smooth surface lightly in front of her and motioned for Vanille to join her. "Come now. We are wasting time."

Poo, no one wanted to do her blood sacrifice idea! She frowned in disappointment and almost slumped back into a chair as she put her Swiss pocket knife back in its place under her dress.

She had never really cared much for the 'no romance' rule, mainly because she didn't have time for that kind of stuff! But since everyone else was older than her, they'd probably want to change it. She didn't really care either way!

She was nervous about summoning Crestatia? What if she died and never existed again? Marina said it was no fun at all, and Vanille didn't want that . . . Her life was on the line on a daily basis, but what about her existence? Even if she died, she still existed somehow, didn't she? Maybe it would have been better not to volunteer.

But by the time she had come to this conclusion, Marina was already stepping on the table and then motioning for her to come, too. She swallowed her fear forcefully, took off her own Converse and then hopped onto the table with ease, looking above her and remembering when she had climbed up that vent. Would she have to do that again?

Her legs went criss-crossed and she was sitting in front of Marina as everyone else watched. Marina seemed to know more about this stuff than she did, so it would probably be a better idea to let her guide and lead things. She pulled out her knife again, just in case and then sat it next to her.

    U - Uhm . . . What now?❞

Marina watched as Vanille joined her an exhaled slowly. It was now or never. There could be no nerves. She had never summoned a demon before. She thought of all the times she contacted the dead, only to realize that there never was any dead. She had never contacted anyone. They do not have souls. They stop existing when they die. It was all implanted into her mind. It never happened. Would this work? It had to and hopefully Crestatia would accept her offer without wanting her dead. It seemed fair, given the circumstances.

    ❝U - Uhm . . . What now?❞ Vanille asked nervously.

Marina closed her eyes and reluctantly held her hands out for the other girl to take. She was not sure if contact would be necessary, but it sounded like the best option. "Follow suit. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath, and relax. You need to stay calm." She flinched slightly at the contact, but shrugged it off. She would have to just get over herself for now. This meeting did have one good side to it. She was starting to feel like her old self. If she survived this, she would have to thank Theodore. It was exhilarating.

"Mmmm," she hummed to herself quietly. Time to get it started. She took one more deep breath and exhaled out all her worry and frustration. "Crestatia, I call upon thee to speak with you. I offer myself up to you. I know you killed your last vessel. You need someone else to do your bidding, and so I give myself to you. Please, take my offer in exchange for a deal to be made." Her cool soprano voice was smooth and confident as she spoke. It had been something she was mulling over for awhile. Ever since she learned the truth of Altair. Anthony had been rather forthcoming with information in the time she shared with him before he died. It was upsetting that he had to go. After everything she did, it had been pointless.

Her eyes snapped open and she searched Vanille's mask for any signs of the demoness. It was probably a waste of time. She was just embarrassing herself in front of a group of people. Marina's cheeks began to burn and she had to suppress the feeling. She needed to remain stoic and unaffected.

Follow suit. Close your eyes. Marina began to instruct, and Vanille followed in suit, ❝Take a deep breath and relax. You need to stay calm.

Right . . . Stay calm. Just as Marina said, she took a breath and then reached for the other's hands. Her breath quietly left her mouth and all of her nerves calmed down. It would be okay. She and Marina would be okay. If they died, and were wiped from existence, that was okay.

Crestatia, I call upon thee to speak with you. I offer myself up to you. I know you killed your last vessel. You need someone else to do your bidding, and so I give myself to you. Please, take my offer in exchange for a deal to be made.

It sounded very official to Vanille's ears, and she could see no reason why it wouldn't work. Was there something she should add? She felt a little silly, but . . .

I offer myself up as a vessel as well, she said calmly, Allow a deal to be made between us and yourself. Silly, yes. It sounded silly, but she really hoped it was working!

She opened her eyes and peered around at the openings through her mask . . . Had it . . . worked? Marina's face looked very unsure, and just to make her feel better, she squeezed her hand gently and smiled. If they had just embarrassed themselves, then at least neither of them were alone . . .

xxxxxFor much of his time here, Cherno did not say a word. He simply watched. Observed, without commenting, with the focus and introspection of a scientist engaged in an experiment.

Was this "trade" going to bring anything else to the table? It seemed more like a zero-sum. Tit-for-tat. This was, assuming of course, that the trade could happen properly. It is true that trading a rule that was currently a large hindrance for one of lesser importance would be hob-stankering kick-smashing. But for such a trade to happen, it meant understanding the demoness' goals with this little game. And it was clear, thus far, that none of them -- he knew, anywho -- understood the goal of this trip smack jilly-janked game. Yet.

With a dazed frown, he rested his head upon a weary white fist.
It wasn't time to speak up yet, no.

    Beep.

    A--ack-- what?
    Ah--
    right.
Right, his phone. A text. Things had been such a drain upon his soul.
He'd glance up its flipside in a jiff. Things were getting interesting.
Were they going to summon the demoness after all? Maybe-- yeah, maybe that'd be a good chance. A good point-hole.

Cherno yawned without a word, and rubbed his eyepatch, briefly looking away.
Ugh. The wounds from that hellish Damocles place hadn't healed yet. Fuck. How the f
uck did things happen to get even more twisted for him in this timeline?
