The low hum of the monorail was almost soothing to Cherno. He lounged on the rows of metal seats directly opposite to the snoozing ... Elliot-- Elliot was his name, right? Okay. Mental note acquired. The name had been lingering around his mind for almost an hour, like a moth to a streetlight. Unlike the crazy scalpel kid, he could barely bat an eye in naptime towards everything that was rushing by him.

The girl -- who had yet to even introduce herself, what a hypocrite -- had been informing Cherno of what the hell everything here was about in her silky voice, so calm and careful. How could she stay like that if she were trapped?

The entire feeling was all too familiar for him. It was clear he knew the girl from before, but his thoughts were failing him. What was more, the damned girl was playing him along for a fool. Did she do this often or something?

Avoiding glances at the snoozing scalpel swagbrain, Cherno turned his head to the window, gazing at the forest of concrete monoliths outside. With their blue veined patterns, they looked like something from a sci-fi movie set. Yet there they were. All real, directly in front of his eyes. Even in the washed out greyness of his vision, Cherno thought that such structures existing were something only in one's imagination.

The girl on the intercom, who seemed to be controlling this monorail car somehow, called the place the "Dubhe Sector". Dubhe as in the star in the Big Dipper, right? She said there were seven levels, so it made sense that they were all named after the other stars. But she was only on the third, and beyond that point, who knows what in parabolic curves existed in this enormous place.
Dubhe Sector provided the computing power for the Damocles Project. Those giant monoliths? They acted as servers, transfer beacons, all sorts of things under the crimson-blood sky of this place that you could name for the computing. The girl still did not specify what the fuck a "Damocles Project" was. Her excuse? "You wouldn't understand it yet".
Ugh. Be patient, Cherno. She hadn't killed you and Elliot yet. Cherno sighed. He wondered when they would--

    " Awake, Cherno Plume."
    xxx
    xxx
    FUCK
    Her voice was loud.
Cherno grumpily sat up and turned his grimacing countenance towards the ceiling.

"I'm already awake, you authoritarian dunderhead! Or can't you see that?"

"You looked pretty sleepy to my careful eye.
Ahaha! I hope you had enough sleep before this little adventure."
    xxx
    xxx
No! No he didn't! He didn't have a fucking acceleration point of anything one could consider sleep! Aaahaahahaaggagahahgahgghg he was going to tear his hair out. He wasn't sleepy but he felt as if his limbs were prone to falling off soon. Why couldn't he get any rest? Now he was on this goose chase to find some girl who may not even exist and his teleportation continued to fail him.

Cherno Plume cursed himself under his breath.

"Yeah, okay." He began. "What did you want to tell me? Can I get a name for the victim I'm saving first, you dig?"

" But that would mean your dearie self would remember who I am, Mr. R- ah, Mr. Plume."
    xxx
    xxx

"Yes! Damn woman, that's one of the main fingerpoints as to why I want to learn your name already!"
    Wait.
Mister. Mister-- she cut off a name. What? She was about to say an "R". R? Who-- who was-- what--

    "Hey!"
"You slipped there. I heard it. Fess up."

"That's no way to treat someone you're potentially rescuing."
    xxx
    xxx
"Can't you at least show your rescuer some respect?"
    Cherno pouted.

He heard a soft giggle, like a wind chime, from the intercom.

"When did we ever show respect to each other, Mr. Plume?
Kukuku. That's right. You are unable to remeeeeeeeember.
Oh, all the fun we had ..."
    xxx
    xxx
Cherno wanted to kick this girl.
What a familiar rush of adrenaline ...

"You're like a puppy, Mr. Plume. All pout-y. How cute.
Boys like you never change after all these years.
Give some lessons to malchik, will you?
He's more like a useless grumpy bear all the time."
    xxx
    xxx
"Can you just tell me what you wanted to awake me for?"
Cherno had turned his head away towards the window, making sure that the stupid girl didn't see the redness of his face.

    "Of course, if I may.
As you know, you're in the Dubhe Sector."
    xxx
    xxx
"I got that the first sixty thousand times you told me."

"How rude of you, Mr. Plume!
    Many people adore my voice.
I hoped that you would not object to my repetitive explanations."
    xxx
    xxx
Her explanations consisted mostly of making fun of him and insulting Elliot anyway. What was with this girl and Elliot?

    Ha.
She didn't have some sort of crush, did she?

"The Dubhe Sector deals with the computing power of the ILP.Not just the Damocles Project. Not just LOGOSTIGMA. The Industrial Light and Power Corporation as a whole.
All automated and autonomated, as they call it, by robotic workers that run on parallel distributive processing.
They all share a collective brain. In essence, this facility is like a giant brain, and the Dubhe Sector is the neocortex, or frontal lobe."
    xxx
    xxx
    "Sure, okay."
Cherno tapped his feet on the side of the seat. The monorail continued to rush by the storm of concrete structures in a blitz.
"I still have little idea what exactly this entails for anything.
The ILP bigwigs who -- it isn't a secret -- basically strum-up control-dangle all of Coy City have their entire hop-ridin' facility connected to the library of the Academy."

"The connection is the key.Mr. Plume, you are a smart fellow, if I do say so myself.
And in a brain like this, connections are the keys.
So tell me, what comes to mind when you hear the words:
    'Damocles Project'?"
    xxx
    xxx
    Damocles Project.
    Here we go.
    HTML:
    logic ( ) {
the story of damocles is a classic of the greek mythos
it deals with the king dionysus II giving his position of wealth and power
to the man damocles, or "fame of the people" in greek
he accepts quickly and is granted the wealth and power
but at the same time there is a sword, the sword of damocles
hanging above his head by only a horse's hair
this puts him in fear and damocles relinquishes his wealth and power
    point of the story?
positions of wealth and power are often dangerous and those who hold them
often fear for their life and position

contrast this with the things known
damocles project servers connected to brookridge's famous academy
academy filled with the children of wealthy and powerful students that are also very intellligent
wealth and power and intelligence guarantee a future in this society
student apparently kidnapped and being held against her will under the damocles project
damocles project deals with the wealthy and powerful brookridge attendees

    socratic:
is it that the damocles project is attempting to round up or keep an eye on the wealthy and powerful
children because they represent the future of brookridge and the region?
is it that the damocles project is attempting to round up these children and potentially encase them
in fear and paranoia for ulterior motives?

    }
    Right.
Cherno turned his head back to the monorail's ceiling.

"The Damocles Project is observing the students of the Academy, right?"
"The Industrial Light and Power Corporation is a pretty big force in Coy City and much of the region, and it seems to be expanding outward -- especially here to Brookridge, ain't it?"
"They want to keep a hand on these children because they're the future of the region. All the richie-rich ones and the smart cats as well. You dig?"

Cherno closed his eyes and sighed.

"It sounds to me like all of this exists to manipulate this next little generation into their own money-pocket. Is that true, goddess?"

The word "goddess" was stuffed with scathing, bitter bile.

    "Goddess?
My my, no need to flatter me. I would blush right now if I could.
    So suave, Mr. Plume. Kukuku."
    xxx
    xxx

"Enough, you insipid yak-horn Toricelli trumpet-strumpet!"
    Cherno was fuming.

In retrospect, she was very much like a goddess, or deity, to him.
A mysterious voice from above, with an identity he could not even place. One that guided him and scalpel-boy on a monorail of fate to wherever their destination lay, in order to reach the land of where this goddess resided in the very end.

It reminded him very much of what John would say.

    John ...

    Ah ...

    ...

    Fuck ...

"Always the creative one with your insults.
Stop sulking. You just visibly grew six cumulonimbus clouds darker right there."
    xxx
    xxx
    Cumulo- what-
what the fuck was this girl smoking-

"I knew you could figure it out. Most of it, anyway.
You're on the correct rain cloud. This place exists for a current, sole reason.
Taking a look into the future of this region.
The Damocles Project concerns itself with the students of our humble little Academy.
In its current stage, it keeps tabs on them, but it can move further beyond that -- and will."
    xxx
    xxx

"You were part of the plan too, Mr. Plume.
There is no helping it. Once these corporations get their claws on us,
We all become part of the plan.
The best we can do is dismantle it from its veritable insides.A true shame you pushed that button ...
Now it seems that the students of the Academy will indeed feel the fear that Damocles felt in his position of wealth and power.
All for a basic cause, of course. I mentioned LOGOSTIGMA earlier ..."
    xxx
    xxx
    He--
    FUCK.
He just-- ****. What did he do? Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck--
    "Tell me!"
"Tell me what that button did, dammit!"

"I am actually unaware, and I say this in all seriousness. So when we return to the school -- if my return will be possible --
We may as well find out.
But regardless, we will be watched, and there is little we may do about it at the moment.
I recommend warning the others at first.
It does not help that we are also trailed along by that dastardly demoness' email."
    xxx
    xxx
    "Email?"
    "You know about the email?"

"Of course. As does malchik. Is it a coincidence that those students with the email are the prime targets for the Damocles Project?
    Possibly. Kukuku.
But otherwise, keep on your toes.
When malchik wakes up, I shall tell you more.
For now, please walk over to the sleeping buffoon and press the metal button under his seat."
    xxx
    xxx
    Cherno's head was hurting.
All of this. Computers. Observations. Suddenly he brought ruin to the others somehow. Why did this keep happening?
Aimlessly and without objection, he stood up and slowly ambled over towards the sleeping Elliot.
Button ... button ... there it was.

    Beep.

" Thank you, Mr. Plume. You make a better canine companion than malchik.
For this reason, he will require some ... repairs.
    Ahahaha!"
    xxx
    xxx
    Oh no.
Did he doom the poor scalpel boy as well? Ugh.
One of the closed panels by Elliot's ears immediately slid upwards, revealing a smaller speaker.

And with it came some old audio record of the girl's songoH FUCK THIS WAS FUCKING LOUD AAAAAAAAAAAAAA EARS

    "Heidi...you don't have to say anything...but I want to ask you a question...tell me....who is Crestatia?"

Her eyes widened in horror. How did he know? Chocolate brown eyes bore deep into the old man's, searching. Why would he ask her that? She swallowed hard, nerves running on high. This should be interesting. Laughter. Her head filled with so much laughter. What was she supposed to do. Heidi stopped crying. Her tiny hands wiped at the wet streaks on her face in a manner almost as if she were slapping herself. She couldn't breathe. She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. How did he know that name? She couldn't tell him, not after what happened last time. Would she get in more trouble for it a second time around? No doubt that would be the case. Would Crestatia kill her over it?

She swallowed again. The lump remained in her chest. Her heart rate elevated which was made blatantly obvious as the beeping on the monitor picked up. What would she do? What would she say? What could she say? Nothing. She could say nothing. Do it deary. We want to see the outcome. We want to test the theory. No. I can't. But it would ease the pain. If she killed you for telling him, you wouldn't hurt anymore. Hah, you could even join him then. Wouldn't that be an appealing thought? No more pain for our little Heidi. How disappointing that would truly be. Do it. no. Do it. No. Do it. NO! Silence. Their coercion ended in silence. They would be back shortly. They were never really gone, just biding their time- lying in wait.

"Can't." She shook her head. "Can't tell you." You know you want to. Just think about Altair. How much you miss him, how much you love him. Don't you want to join him? Stop it. Tell him. "Cres... Crestatia..." Her heart beat even faster. Blood pounded in her ears. Their laughter echoed so loudly. Taunting, teasing. They wanted to see how far they could push her. Would it work? "No. Can't." It hurt, not telling. She wanted to. She wanted to tell someone that wasn't involved in all this craziness. She wanted out. To be rid of all of this. To be rid of them, of this nightmare. "I'm sorry..."
More tears began to slowly pour out. She didn't have the heart. Her chest ached something fierce. As much as Heidi wanted to tell him, she just couldn't.[/paragraph]

He had been drifting in and out of consciousnesses for a while now so Elliot caught some of the conversation. Though for the most part everything that was being said was lost on him. Still, he was sure he was mentioned at least once. Probably something rude.

Whatever. All he really wanted was sleep, so he was going back to sleep. But-

    "MOTHER OF HAWKING."

    WHY.

Though it hurt the man greatly to see the girl like this, the old man received just what he was looking for. The reaction alone proved that this "Crestetia" person was possibly responsible for some of the deaths occurring around the city. "You don't have to say any more..." the old man said closing his eyes with a sigh. The girl obviously knew much about the situation, but her mentality was in a mess and to question any further would break her mind. Reaching into his pocket the man brought out a cellphone and placed it in Heidi's hand "Altair died by poison...he would never commit suicide...that is what I believe" the old man said closing his eyes and stood up. "That phone belongs to Altair...I don't know what game you are taking part of but it seems Altair expected this end." The old man said as he turned away "There is a voice message for you in that phone....whether you should erase it and avoid the pain or listen to it is up to you" the man said as he began to walk out. "I'll be heading out for now. If you need anything at all just don't hesitate to call" the old man said

"No that's not the issue at all dad... um. No, I am fine. No- Dad, Dad. Yes I'll be fine. I love you okay? Bye."
She didn't have a dorm-mate anymore after last year. The girl she was with last year didn't mind her at all and became a good friend, but she graduated and was gone. So now she was on her own. She didn't mind it, especially on a day like today where her hormones were going crazy. Her father was concerned about the murders, but is very understanding as to why she just wanted to stay there.
If there were indeed classes today it did not matter. She took online courses in her free-time and was ahead in many subjects, she still would go to class but today was one of those days she really did not want to be socializing.
Too much testosterone, not enough estrogen.
Right now she was google searching about the Cold War from other perspectives in the world. Not Soviet Union or USA perspectives but other accounts about listening to the stories unfold. She saw a small little notification pop up in her inbox on gmail and went to check it out.
Looking at the title she chuckled at it, "Lovely... spambox just never catches these do they?" she clicked on the check box next to the email and deleted it. She rubbed her lips together before the same email popped up again. "Are you kidding me?" she repeated the same process about 12 times before she decided to look at the date and raised an eyebrow at it.
She tried to delete it again and it popped up again, she closed the browser she was using and opened up IE instead of using Chrome. Same thing kept happening. Over and over again until she leaned back in her chair and spoke, "Am I high on something?"
Jessie bit her lip before she looked over at her firewall and virus scanner, then scanned the email. No virus. "What the hell is this thing?" She gave up and decided to just open the damn thing. She read everything over and over again before she wrested her head on her fist. "That's it? No rick roll? Nothing? What a waste of time." she went over to delete it again and it popped up again. Showing it as read.
"Are you fucking serious right now?"

Reaching into his pocket the man brought out a cellphone and placed it in Heidi's hand. "Altair died by poison...he would never commit suicide...that is what I believe" Mr. Marshall said closing his eyes and stood up. They thought Altair killed himself? Why would they- that report. Did that mean they also thought he was the one that killed everyone else? "That phone belongs to Altair...I don't know what game you are taking part of but it seems Altair expected this end." The old man said as he turned away, "There is a voice message for you in that phone....whether you should erase it and avoid the pain or listen to it is up to you." Mr. Marshall said as he began to walk out. "I'll be heading out for now. If you need anything at all just don't hesitate to call," the old man said.

Heidi watched as he left. Her tiny fingers flipped the phone over and over again in her hands. He left her a message? Why would he do that? Was he preparing to...to... He couldn't. She shook her head rather brusquely. He couldn't have been. Why would he? Everything felt numb. She couldn't feel the phone in her hand. She didn't know what to do. Listen to it. Let it be over with. Put an end to this pain you feel so we can take control. Listen to it. You know you want to. Listen to it. Why would he leave me a message? He's foolish, that's why. He only wants to hurt you. We'll protect you. You'll be fine so long as it's just us.

She rested one hand on her chest, over the spot where her heart would be. It didn't even feel like it was there anymore. Was that why it hurt so bad? Did her heart disappear? The other unlocked the phone. She pressed down on the voice mail icon. A shiver went down her spine as she lifted the phone carefully to her ear. "One New Message From--" This was it. The ache was still there. Everything was both numb and painful at the same time. She buried the side of her face into the pillow, the phone resting between the cover and her ear.

Last night's emotion exploit had exhausted Harley more than anything else he had been through before. Emotions sucked pretty badly, he had decided when he opened his eyes.

He supposed that . . . last night could be thought about more because he had been truly terrified at the prospect of Kallisti being dead. Not that the fear had just poof'd away today, but it was less of a burden on his heart, and he had more sense than his tired mind had last night. Would he be devastated if she was dead? Yeah, but it wouldn't deter him.

This game, it seemed, was built to break them, but Harley wouldn't be broken. So long as there was something worth living for - and trust him, he would find something to live for - then it was worth living. Besides, NO SUICIDE was one of the rules, and frankly, if he was going to be punished, he didn't want it to be for a stupid thing like killing himself.

Why was something like that a rule, anyway?

Man . . . He almost hoped his cousin failed in summoning Crestatia. Maybe she did, and that was the way she had died? If she died, that was. Heidi didn't exactly tell him who it was, but . . . if that message was to more than one person, then multiple people died.

Would it be on the news? Maybe his aunt would be watching it. Maybe she would find out something fucking terrible that way. If Kallisti was dead, he didn't want to be the one to tell her. He didn't even want it to be true himself because it meant something awful - it meant he failed in protecting her.

He sighed as he rubbed his face, suddenly tired.

A knock on his door sounded and after staring at it for a moment, he called for the visitor to come in.

" Good morning, love, " Oh, it was his aunt.

" Good morning, Lilith . . . " he said, flopping back on to his bed.

" Oh, good, you didn't tag on that 'auntie' bit, " she said with a small laugh, " Didn't quite fancy that, much, made me feel like an old woman. "

Harley gave a little laugh as she sat down next to him. For a little while after that, silence fell between the two of them, and there was a question lingering in the air. One small sight later, and the question was released.

" Ah . . . How has she been? " Lilith asked gently, albeit a bit slowly.

Harley closed his eyes. This was a question he didn't want to think about. This was a conversation he didn't want to have.

"To those who do not know of the name Altair S Geis then this message hold nothing for you. This message is something I've withheld until my eventual end and with this I wish to relay my feelings should I never be able to before my time. The game has come to an end for me and with it, the pawn has left the chessboard. Demetri...no grandfather...I still remember our first encounter, the very first moment we met....you punched me like the damn old man you are, but that punch was what let me move on with my life and continue to live. Its the most precious memory I have and I could never repay you for what you've done for me. I'm sorry but in the end I was unable to keep my word....live on you damn old man...

Next is Casey...I apologize for everything, I will admit I've been acting a bit distant from you, but in the end I've always enjoyed your company...duking it out, the pranks, everything...I had fun with you my brother. Your strong and you don't need me watching over you. I want you to march on....I know those muscles will grow eventually and you will be the manliest of men. Go forth and protect those you care and love for.

And finally Heidi......I am nothing but a dirty promises breaker. How I wish you would never get to hear this message...how I wish that I will be there for you and help you with your troubles....Heidi....you are precious to me....though our blood may not be the same you will always be my sister. Whether you hate me or not for leaving you I will accept any hatred you bear towards me....but please...I want you to stay strong....this is my final request...Though you deny it and believe that you are weak....I know you are strong deep inside. Only you can make your own choices...nobody else....be strong my sisters....and farewell."

He helped her with dishes. He helped her with shopping. He helped her with lawn work. He helped her with other various chores around the house. Ugh! This is hell on Earth. He flee'd the soonest chance he could get. Calling around on his cell phone, as he hid in his room. He paced back and forth, quietly, as he finally got some info on Clark's whereabouts. Where he was. Check. What was he doing. Check. Who was he with. Check. Duncan jotted these things down as he stood by his window. Getting light while balancing the phone on his cheek as he wrote. When that was done, he crawled under his bed and stayed down there. In the absolute darkness of his black entrenched room. The she-witch of Brookridge would never find him here.

Nate's day went by quickly up until he got to his next to last class. Being one that he willingly paid attention to, he awaited it to start. Unfortunate for him, there was a sub today and he didn't have a clue about what he was doing. In the end they just ended up doing what ever they wanted, which left Nate free to browse the internet.

This was the most unbearable recording she had ever heard. It was worse than any report she had ever seen on the news. This was coming directly from him. It felt wrong, listening to the first two messages. They were private. She never should have heard the things he said to Mr. Marshall and Casey. It was too personal. "And finally Heidi......" No. She didn't want to listen. Her heart was breaking into pieces just from what he said to the others. Everything hurt. It hurt so bad. The monitor was beeping wildly. "I am nothing but a dirty promises breaker. How I wish you would never get to hear this message...how I wish that I will be there for you and help you with your troubles...." You should be here. You can't really be gone. She sobbed quietly into the pillow at the sound of his voice. She would miss that sound. How confident and reassuring he always was. The warmth of his body when he held and protected her. His strong hand on her shoulders. "Heidi....you are precious to me....though our blood may not be the same you will always be my sister." Sister. Again, it didn't feel right hearing him say that. It brought comfort, but somehow, she had wished it more than that, even if she didn't realize. Heidi didn't want to be his sister, but even now, she doesn't fully understand the feeling inside her. Even if she did, it wouldn't matter. It wasn't safe. "Whether you hate me or not for leaving you I will accept any hatred you bear towards me...." I don't hate you. I could never hate you. Please come back. Please. "but please...I want you to stay strong....this is my final request...Though you deny it and believe that you are weak...." I am weak. "I know you are strong deep inside." They're the strong ones. That we are deary. That we are. "Only you can make your own choices...nobody else....be strong my sisters....and farewell."

"End of Messages." Her hands shook violently. She was ready to throw his phone across the room, but then it would be gone. His voice would be lost forever. She didn't want to lose the sound of his voice. Already it began to seem like a dream. His smooth, straight talking, confident voice fading away into the ether. He always seemed so sure of himself.

It's just like he said deary. He's a promise breaker. How many times did he hurt you? It's time to move on. No. I don't want too. You must. What are you going to do now? You don't have your precious Altair to rely on. Where are you going to go? You can't go back to that room. It's the boy's dorm and you're not a student. What will you do now? I don't... I don't kn-- Of course you don't. You never know. Let us help you. We will take care of the pain, of the problems. There's... there's still Harley, and Zoey, and Casey... Really? You're going to burden them the way you burdened that old man and Altair? How smooth of you. Anthony. He never texted you back. Do you really think he's still alive? He... he has to be. We didn't... I left. He didn't show me how to play the game. He has to be alive. I already almost lost him once. He has to show me how to play the game. Wow deary. You have never been so selfish before. Me Me Me. Since when has it been all about you? What you want; what you feel? Did you ever stop to think about them? What they want; what they feel? Maybe they want nothing to do with you. Did you ever think of that? Y-ye- Did you? Did you really?

She was crying harder now. Doctor Myers came in to calm her down. The nurse injected her with a sedative. She couldn't relax. They were afraid of her breaking the stitches yet again. If they didn't sedate her, she would cause more bodily harm. It was under the strictest orders from Grandpa Marshall that they not restrain her to the bed. It was dangerous for everyone. She was thrashing. "Stop!" Heidi felt completely dead inside. What was the point in continuing on like this? The only reason she hadn't killed herself a long time ago was because of the rule in the email. She couldn't handle the way they treated her. The way everyone treated her. She was a monster. A scared little monster. Why would Harley, Zoey, or even Casey want anything to do with her? She was fooling herself. Altair was gone. Anthony was probably gone. Who else did she text? Allison? She hadn't heard from her yesterday either. Odds were in favor of her being dead.

Her body felt heavy from the sedative. Eyelids drooped shut. It was the only thing to get her to calm down. The medical staff had to hold her down until it began to take full effect. Her knuckles were white from gripping the railings on the bed so tightly. Her body went limp on the twin sized mattress. What would she do without him? She wasn't the strong person he said she was. Heidi had never been strong. If she was strong, she could fight them. She could have stopped Ramona. She wouldn't be here, right now, in this hospital bed; mirroring the pathetic little girl she was. She cried herself into a drug induced coma. That's right. Rest now deary. We have so much to look forward too.

When she heard her alarm go off, Isabella immediately set it to off. She felt exhausted and her entire body felt heavy. What harm could there be in taking another day off? Sure, it wouldn't leave a good impression on her teachers, but she had a legitimate reason for missing two days of school.

He deserved his spot as captain of the soccer team. He was just so damn good. He crossed his arms over his chest as he trudged across the snow covered ground. The goal he had his parents set up was about thirty feet from the house. It annoyed him but it let him get as much practice as he needed. He was getting annoyed, starting to feel too cold because of the exertion he put on his body from practice was quickly fading. His sweat cooling and reducing his core temperature, instead of making it normal. His arms rubbed his shoulders as he finally walked into the house, leaving snow prints and slamming the door behind him. He was still angry at his mother. And did minor things, here and there, basically being a slob to annoy her to no end.

So he stomped his way across the shiny marbled floor. Satisfied with the clumps of snow that fell off his charcoal black boots as he loudly made his way up the stairs. He heard a voice shout out to keep it down, but he just jumped up to the top flooring and grinned as the shout became a shriek of his full name. He hightailed it too the safety of his room and locked his doorknob before kicking off his boots right in front of the door. He changed quickly, there was no time for a shower with the demons prowling about outside. Tch, she would arrive and he would be 'sleeping' so he'd not be able to open the door for her. Duncan chuckled and a smirk was on his face as he heard footsteps going up the stairs and his eyelids shut out all vision. He was asleep after the first few minutes after pressing play on his iPod.

After Elliot had woken up, the girl did not hesitate in telling the two boys much of which there was to know -- interspersed with mildly mocking comments here and there.

Cherno tried gathering what information he could. What was known was that Project Damocles was a big thing. Very big. It was a way for this little corporation to condition and control the students of the Academy through all sorts of subtle ways. But the girl was not sure how exactly they were doing it, yet.

She also claimed that these children were being conditioned to support a giant project called LOGOSTIGMA. But like the details of Project Damocles, she had little idea what LOGOSTIGMA actually was.

What seemed just as important to Cherno, however, was the fact that this girl knew some things about his past. The train ride seemed very long, and painted a picture of exactly how enormous this facility was. Although the girl expressed some sort of concern over possible "attacks" in the second sector, they breezed by without a hitch, escaping a few close calls.

When they reached the final sector, a large, cavernous series of metallic "shelves" with tunnels in all directions, the train stopped, the doors opened, and the two boys were able to step out.

Directly in front of them was a door, a small one, with the familiar lines of blue light adorning its thick metal in simple patterns.

    " Open the door, malchik.
I'm in here, but not as you may know.
When we get out, I need to confront a few people on this.
And we have to be careful.
But I also require your help -- if that is even possible -- in ... repairs,

    as one may say."

When their ride finally came to a stop there seemed to be only one more door between them and the end of this little adventure. How wonderful, as he was getting tired of this. Things ought to be more straightforward instead of in riddles, as his mind could barely handle it after being presented with the possibility that magic actually existed.

Though with Olivia's next words he was able to put aside his weariness for a moment as it was overwhelmed by confusion. Just what was wrong? Well, only one way to find out he supposed before reaching for the door, turning the handle and opening it.

    Damn.

The room certainly caught Cherno off guard.
Compared to the enormous structures popping about this facility -- most of which the girl said consisted only as a small part of this enormous place -- and all of its brutalist forests of technological functionalism, what was inside this room could almost be considered a thing of beauty.

Gone were the concrete walls, gone were the blue veins that lined the facility, gone were the sparks of electricity and the brief glimpses of strange robotic works, gone was everything that could be considered a part of a sinister laboratory corporate conspiracy, and what was left was sheer beauty, as if the two boys had stepped onto the set of a movie.

The floor had disappeared. What was left was a soft, calm surface -- like a pond, or an immense puddle that seemed to continue on towards infinity wherever Cherno turned. When Cherno placed his feet upon this surface, he realized that he could walk on this water. His footstep produced small ripples that gently moved away from his boot before slowly collapsing into the limitless nothingness.

This thin, watery surface reflected the light of the stars above. Billions of them littered a dark blue sky, and they danced around in their scintillating attire with the familiar bands of galaxies and far-off clusters. It was as if he was peering directly into the very mind of the cosmos, and yet, his only interaction with these stars would be stepping upon their reflections.

The room was more like an infinite space -- one that continued in all directions, and bore no walls nor a ceiling. The door simply opened into the space, and was held up only by its frame -- for behind it, the vast, sparkling ocean continued onward. Was it an illusion? Were they actually inside the facility? The beauty of the void struck Cherno with immaculate awe.

There were two objects, far off in the distance, whose jagged outlines broke the serenity of the scene before them.

    Oh?
Cherno stepped forward, carefully and gently lowering his foot. The minute he set it down upon the water, ripples and waves bounded out and shattered the water's starry mirror, if only for a brief moment. But he did not fall. He did not slip. The water seemed as firm as the concrete and metal floors he had stepped upon within the facility.

He slowly moved forward, through the expanse of the sea of stars. Each and every footstep of his sent out ripples that briefly broke apart the starry mirror, before settling into the void. As he grew closer to the objects, he turned his back towards the scalpel boy and beckoned him to come forward.

Before him, the two jagged outlines turned into two objects he wouldn't expect to see in such a place. The first was a large, white column. Swirly decals, volutes, and indents covered its sides with geometric precision, and it seemed almost inhuman in its perfect construction. It reminded Cherno of the familiar marble pillars that littered Italian Renaissance architecture.

In front of the pillar was a solid aluminum box. Aluminum box? It was almost like a casket, floating along in the water.
A small bird-- a dove-- lay resting and dormant upon it. Its white feathers were splayed across the metal in all sorts of chaotic patterns, and some plumage had even fallen to the watery surface below, floating delicately among the stars.

But that wasn't what made Cherno's eyes widen. What surprised him was the fact that the bird had one of its eyes replaced with something that looked almost robotic. The bird looked dead. Was it dead? What was it even doing here?

Suddenly, a voice boomed all around them.
The water did not flinch from the sound, as if it was simply in his head. As if he was being talked to by some sort of deity, and yet it came from all throughout this void.

"I am glad we could finally meet in person, Mr. Plume.
This is my room. The one in which I have been held.
It, coincidentally, serves as the entrance point to the rest of the facility.
Megrez Sector, they call it, and the very same sector where I was taken.
Please do not touch the aluminum box. Malchik will handle that."
    xxx
    xxx
    Wait.
    What?

"I know you look confused, ahaha.
But this is part of what they may do to the ... unfortunate."
    xxx
    xxx
    Her voice was different.
It wasn't as playful anymore. It was filled with discontent and worry. Especially with the word "unfortunate".
Cherno looked towards the box. Was she ...

    "You are correct.
I am as much of a lab rat as anyone else who faces these problems.
Now please, touch this white column so we can escape quickly.
I do have people to confront, after all ..."
    xxx
    xxx
Was she lying? She couldn't be-- she-- what.
    This was all so confusing.
Cherno slowly walked over to the white pillar and placed a palm upon its cold surface. It was like smooth marble.

"A simple touch by a subject of Project Damocles will suffice. It will be enough to remove my consciousness from this neural terminal and into the most useful object available.
So please, hold out your other hand to the bird."
    xxx
    xxx

Cherno did as he was told. He-- he did not want to ask anymore questions.
Fucking hell. This had all left him so grumpy. All of it. First the e-mail, now whatever the hell was going on here. This girl had her mind trapped in the entire structure of the facility, or something? No wonder she was able to do this.

    "Where is your body?"

Cherno brought his hand closer to the bird.

    "I haven't a clue.
It may very well be in the aluminum box, but I am unsure.
That is why malchik must handle it for me.Unless you mean my new body.
    Viola is ...
    gone.
I knew this day would happen,
so I must take her mantle upon my own soul for now."
    xxx
    xxx
    So it was true.
Her voice kept stumbling and faltering.
Was this what Project Damocles was going to do? Influence and brainwash the children of the Academy, and in failing to do so, forcibly place their minds within the computer structure of the facility itself?

    Ah ...
    Cherno felt nauseous.
He really, really did not wish to live on this planet anymore.

He touched the wing tip of the silent dove upon the aluminum casket and-- FUCK.

    Ahahahaha.
    Why are you doing this?
Why do you want to stress yourself through all of this nonsense anymore? Is it because of the game? You know you want to win, so why risk your life for all of this anymore?

Cherno was struck by an electric shock.
His finger slipped away from the bird, and he blacked out, falling to the water with a soft splash that sent ripples in all directions, breaking apart the mirror of the stars.

    Olivia opened her eyes.
She lay resting upon the metal casket, silently looking at the stars. Everything seemed so large to her. The sky and its infinite points of light. The metal box, almost like an island. She turned her head very slightly. There was the column in which she was held. Once a bright marble white, it had turned completely black upon the removal of her consciousness.

She could barely move for the moment. Where was Cherno? Did he collapse?
    Oh-- oh dear.

    Olivia lifted a wing.
Her voice called through the void, canned and recorded, played through Viola's speakers.
If she were in her own body, tears would have been falling down her cheeks. But no. She was in the body of her deceased friend. Trapped, and only able to keep the emotions to herself until the time came.

Oh ... how terrible her voice must sound through this ...

    "Malchik."
    "Malchik."

By allowing Cherno to enter the room first Elliot was able to see that it was safe to enter and thus followed the other, staying a few feet behind in case there was a trap laying in wait. By doing this the other boy would trigger it first, giving him enough time to see what it was and to get out of its way.

Though, luckily, nothing dangerous sprung out at them and they safely crossed the room. Awaiting them was what appeared to be Viola but- wait, Olivia's voice was heard again. What did she mean finally meet in person? There was only...

    "Olivia?"

He stared at the bird while listening to the rest of the conversation before looking back to Cherno just in time to see the buffoon faint. Something was wrong with that kid, but instead of worrying about him or even going to see if he was still alive Elliot approached the box. He didn't know what to do. How useless of him. He's been simply 'there' the entire time through this. It was a strange feeling, as if his energy had drained away the moment they came here.

In any case, he found himself reaching for the bird in disbelief. It couldn't actually be her, could it? It had to of been just some strange prank by the stupid girl. Though as he moved forward his foot hit against the box, creating a distraction as the thing began to shrink. That was new.

He picked up the now small box and decided to pocket it for the time being as Cherno looked like he was getting up now. Good, because there was no way he could have carried the boy out of here.

Speaking of, it was about time they left this place. So, before anything else happened, the three were lead out and found themselves back on campus.

When she opened her eyes again, she was alone. The heart rate monitor had returned to its normal steady beeping, matching her appropriate heart rate. Beep. Beep. Beep. . . . And so on. She felt dizzy, sluggish, and tired. Her eyes drifted to the right, a black phone sat silently on the bedside table. A phone? Chocolate brown eyes stared longingly at it. One of the nurses must have moved it during the struggle. She lifted her hand to the cut on her head, surprised to see that she was still free of restraints. Would this be how things end for her- just as they began? Life in a hospital bed seemed to be inevitable. What would she do now? I am nothing but a dirty promises breaker. You're not. how I wish that I will be there for you and help you with your troubles.... Why did you have to go? She didn't want to cry anymore. Her eyes were puffy and sore, tired of crying. They seemed to escape her anyway.

Would she ever stop crying? Now how many times do I have to tell you to quit crying you little cry baby? I can't help it. What am I supposed to do now? Deal with it. Let us deal with it. I... I can't. Why not deary? We'll make the pain go away. You remember the table, the tea party? Y-yeah. You can go back there. You can sit quietly, safely, while we make the pain go away. He can be with you there. The way you want him to be. You just have to let go. Go there. Let us take over. Imagine him there with you. You know what he sounds like. You know what he looks like; what he acts like. You could put him there with you. Be happy. Let us take over. B-but... But what? It wouldn't really be him. What does it matter? So long as it doesn't hurt.

It was tempting. So very very tempting. What would become of her if she finally gave in, let them have control? What about Harley and the others? What about them? Zoey was the reason you wound up injured. You have heard nothing from Anthony or that Allison girl. Casey is pathetic. Look at him. He is no company to keep. Harley cares more about that cousin of his than anything else. Think about how little you have even spoke to him since Christmas Eve. How many times have you seen him since you went shopping, like twice maybe? He doesn't want anything to do with you. What happened when you asked him if he was alive? He asked you about his cousin. Then about how you were doing. He doesn't want anything to do with you. He didn't even respond to you. Th-that's not true. Isn't it? Isn't it?

She reached over for the phone, the I.V tube trailing after. Her delicate fingers wrapped around it and snatched the piece of plastic off of the table, holding it tightly against her chest. It was her last thing he would ever say to her. What did he do? What rule did he break? Did it have something to do with the curse mentioned so long ago? Had it really only been about a month? It felt like an eternity since then. She said hello to him in a hospital and said goodbye to him in one as well. I should have asked him to stay. What difference would it have made? Heidi hugged the phone to her cheek, tears dripping down onto the screen. I don't want to do this anymore. Oh come now deary. Why give up so easily? You know why. You just don't want me to erase you. You would be erasing yourself as well. Do you think killing yourself is really going to solve your problems? Did it ever work before? I didn't die before. Because you don't have it in you. We both know you can't do it. You can't put an end to us, because it means putting an end to yourself. Now what do you think will happen? There is a no suicide rule. That demoness won't let you out so easily. What kind of punishment do you think she has in store for those that try? Wonder if anyone has attempted it yet... It might actually be fun to see what the outcome is. Only to you. They shrugged. It was true. They wanted to see what would happen. They were using her. She lived for their entertainment.

Don't you see he was using you too? What are you talking about? Not entirely sure, and we'll now never know, but he was using you deary. No. No he wouldn't. Oh really? There was a peculiar gleam in his eye whenever we would mess with you. You never noticed because you were too busy fighting your own body, but we did. We noticed right away. You're lying. When have we ever lied to you? You're lying! Fine, if that's what you wish to believe, so be it.

She couldn't take it anymore. Heidi dropped the phone by her side and began clawing at her ears. She didn't want to listen to them. She couldn't handle the things they were saying. The filth that spewed out of their every thought. It was all too much. The monitor started beeping wildly once more. Thin streaks of blood trailed down the sides of her head as her nails scratched sharply away at her earlobes. She pounded her fists against her temples. It hurt, but they hurt worse. There was laughter again. They were enjoying the torture she caused to herself. As if on cue, the medical staff rushed into the room. They held her down once more and again injected the clear serum into her bloodstream. Doctor Mayers shook his head. That same weathered expression was creased into his brow. He was definitely not liking the fact that he drew the short stick. Why would anyone want to be her doctor? It was troublesome.

When her body stopped responding to her will, she saw Doctor Mayers pull his phone out of his coat pocket and dial a number. Who was he calling in her room? She forced her eyes to stay open, even when everything had gone numb. She could hardly think for herself at the moment, let alone control her bodily actions. "If she continues to behave this way, we will be forced to restrain her again. I know you said otherwise, but she has done nothing except cause harm to herself. You should see her face. No. No we have it under control. There is no need to come back so soon, but being her guardian, we are required to inform you. Miss Layne- Heidi, Heidi is incapable of keeping from hurting herself. All right. Okay. I understand. Goodbye." Her brown eyes stayed glued to the doctor, her face void of all emotion. He came closer, resting a hand on her forehead. Doctor Mayers, looked distraught. What could be eating away at him? "I'm sorry," he whispered before exiting the room.

Cherno could not think properly through all of this. He ambled off and went to his room to sleep, trying not to say a word. The feeling of the warm blankets was a relaxing experience.

Olivia perched on Elliot's shoulder and tried resting herself in Viola's body.
Her circuitry slowed accordingly to the point that she was asleep. She would be spending the night in his room.
